Black Civil War guerilla chief

Probably the South's most noted guerilla chief was a Black man named

Henry Berry Lowry. For the 10 year period from 1861 (at the outbreak of the

Civil War) to 1871 (when he was finally defeated by the Klu Kulx Klan) he lead an army composed of escaped

slaves and Black Indians, and opened war on white people. Killing all who didn't chose to flee, and controlled

Robeson Country, N.C. and ravished many of the neighboring counties.
