The police are investigating the death of a Bartica grocer, whose body was discovered in an abandoned mining pit at 3 Miles, Karrau Backdam, Mazaruni on Friday afternoon.

The dead woman has been identified as Rosella Smith, 28, of Bamford Point, Bartica.

Smith sold groceries from a makeshift camp, not far from where her body was found.

A source told Sunday Stabroek that the discovery was made around 12.30 pm on Friday by a miner who was heading to work.

Smith’s camp was subsequently checked and it appeared to be ransacked.
