The young men and women were killed on Sunday, May 31, making it the most violent day in the City in sixty years, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab.

Between 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, and 11 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at least 25 people had been murdered in the City, with other 85 sustaining gunfire injuries, based on the records kept by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The City is known globally for its high crime rates, and in the 1990s, Chicago recorded at least 900 murders per year.

The only time the murders in a single day went that high was on August 4, 1991, when 13 people were killed, crime lab reports.

“On Saturday and particularly Sunday, I heard people saying all over, ‘Hey, there’s no police anywhere, police ain’t doing nothing,’” Pfleger said

Chicago’s 911 emergency center received more than 60,000 calls for all types of service requests, which is more than 50,000 on a typical day.
