A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Women scientists have a vital part to play in scientific leadership and in contributing to Africa's development and transformation.

Gender disparities persist in the scientific workforce, largely leaving women scientists in junior positions with little responsibility and power to make decisions, as well as limited leadership opportunities.

To track and monitor women's representation, the African Development Bank's gender equality index captures progress on the appointment of women to posts of responsibility.

The African Union Kwame Nkrumah Awards for Scientific Excellence Programme honours two outstanding African women scientists from each of Africa's five geographical regions.

This programme promotes scientific development, encourages perseverance in research or academic careers, nurtures ambition, and raises the profile of science and technology innovation so that it contributes to Africa's development.

In the last few weeks, we’ve witnessed and for some of us, participated in the fight against police brutality with the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tanisha Anderson, Sandra Bland and countless others.

The Black Lives Matter movement has been re-energized and has taken collective action through protest and demands for policy changes related to police reform and accountability.

While we don’t want to overshadow the issues this country is facing regarding systematic racism and white supremacy, police brutality, and a slow erosion of our democracy itself by the nation’s leader, we should be reminded that the fight against police brutality and toward Black liberation must include Black LGBTQ persons of color.

Dr. Simmons passed away this year, but how many of us are aware of the quiet, important work that he’s done in Washington and the country toward the goal of ending the HIV epidemic in the Black community?

The amount of talent and lives we’ve lost from the Black LGBTQ community does not escape me in our efforts to end police brutality and reform policing.

LONDON, (Reuters) – Jonny Bairstow says he wants to return to the England test squad for next month’s home series against West Indies as the designated wicketkeeper, not a specialist batsman.

Bairstow was dropped for the tour of New Zealand in November and played only one test in South Africa as a specialist batsman.

“I was disappointed to lose the gloves at the time,” Bairstow told British media.

The 30-year-old, who was named in England’s 55-man training group for the three-test series against West Indies, said he had used the time during the coronavirus shutdown to work on his batting technique.

“I’m pleased with the way my batting has been going,” Bairstow said.

As states, municipalities and agencies continue grappling with the economic impacts of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, the West Valley Water District Board of Directors has taken what most consider a prudent and responsible approach to the agency’s 2020-2021 budget by approving $416,000 in cost savings and no water rate increases.

Board President Channing Hawkins who stewarded the budget’s approval, gave credit to the agency’s management team for working together and making the hard choices required while also prioritizing investments in the agency’s infrastructure.

“In the face of a pandemic and economic crisis,” Hawkins continued, “this budget delivers on our promise to increase fiscal responsibility and accountability.”

Speaking to the agency’s proactive approach to budget management WVWD Board Vice President Kyle Crowther shared, “I am pleased that we were able to identify funding for critical projects to enhance services across our Water District.

I am proud of the work our management team has done to ensure that we have a budget that keeps water flowing.”

Steve Harvey apparently is looking a little different, more specifically older, according to some fans of him and his wife, Marjorie.

In a photo Marjorie Harvey posted to Instagram on Tuesday, June 9, users accidentally mistook Steve for his wife’s father.

Instagram users applauded the pair for voting early, but a few people confused Steve for Marjorie’s father, adding that he looked “old.”

When a different person assured the man in the picture was “Steve Harvey,” the fan replied, “I Thgt that was her father but now👀.”

Someone else swore up and down that Steve was “Marjorie’s dad,” but a fan corrected the person and responded, “No that’s uncle Steve.”
