David Norman Dinkins began his first working day as mayor

of New York City with a 7:00 a.m. appearance on NBC-TV's

'Today' show. After defeating former mayor Edward Koch

in the September Democratic primaries and then, by a small

margin, beating Republican Rudolph Guiliani in the general

election, Dinkins had become the first African-American mayor

of America's largest City.
