On March 13, 2013, Pope Francis became the first pontiff from Latin America and the first to name himself after St Francis of Assisi. According to the 2023 edition of the Pontifical Yearbook, there are 1.3 billion Catholic Christians in the world; over 19% of them living in Africa.
