A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Within the framework of the operation to repatriate Cameroonians blocked abroad due to the coronavirus pandemic, 139 of them got to the Yaounde-Nsimalen International Airport on Saturday, May 9, 2020 on board a special Ethiopian Airlines plane from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, information from the Ministry of External Relations indicates.

The Ministry's sources further disclose that Cameroon's General Consulate in Dubai under the coordination of the Consul General, Donancier Mebouogue worked tirelessly for the return of the Cameroonians from the outset up to their departure at the DXB Airport in Dubai.

It was disclosed that 152 Cameroonians were initially registered at the Consulate indicating their desire to return home but only 139 finally appeared at the airport and boarded the plane.

Unlike more affluent countries who shifted the burden of reparation to the citizens, the government of Cameroon shoulders all the bills and that has costed the State nearly FCFA 700 million for repartition, they further note.

Cameroon is amongst the few African countries ensuring and bearing the costs of the repatriation of its citizens.

The United Nations voiced \"horror\" after reports that eight mass graves had been discovered in an area recently seized by the unity government after forces loyal to eastern strongman Khalifa Haftar withdrew.

Several presumed mass graves have been discovered near Tarhuna, southeast of the capital Tripoli, since it was seized back by forces loyal to the UN-recognised Government of National Accord on 5 June.

\"We are searching all the mass graves to identify the bodies and return them to their families,\" said GNA interior minister Fathi Bachagha, who was in Tarhuna on Thursday.

Separately, 160 bodies were also discovered in the morgue by GNA forces upon their arrival in the city, according to the director of Tarhuna's public hospital, Aburawi al-Buzeidi.

May 18 : South Sudan VP, Defense Minister infected

\tSouth Sudan’s Vice President Riek Machar has contracted coronavirus, his office confirmed on Monday, May 18.

April 1 : Virus-free South Sudan reports paltry tests

\tSouth Sudan, one of five virus-free African countries, says it has carried out 18 tests for the COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic.

A March 31, 2020 statement from the office of the first vice-president confirmed that the country had no case of coronavirus.

The same day that Burundi confirmed an index case leaving South Sudan as the only East African country uninfected.

Previously, some experts had expressed doubts about South Sudan’s prolonged no case citing that the country could have failed to detect cases due to lack of capacity.

In July 2013, the Cyrenaica Political Bureau, a militia led by Ibrahim Jathran, began a blockade of Libyas major oil ports and demanded expanded autonomy for Cyrenaica, a province in eastern Libya, and a greater share in oil revenues. The government did little to end the blockade, despite the loss of oil revenue—the lifeblood of Libyas economy. In March 2014, the group loaded a tanker with 234,000 barrels of crude oil (valued at about $30 million) to sell on the black market. Prime Minister Zeidan said the move was an act of piracy and threatened to blow up the ship. The militants, however, defied the threats and the tanker left the port. Parliament voted to dismiss Zeidan, citing his weakness and inability to control the militia. Abdullah al-Thinni was named interim prime minister. U.S. Navy SEALS raided the ship days later and captured three Libyans said by crew members to be hijackers. The ship was set to return to Libya. The raid was a major setback to Jathrans militia.

In May, former general Khalifa Heftar organized a group of anti-Islamist nationalists, calling it the Libyan National Army, and led a campaign against a coalition of Islamic militias, Libya Dawn, in eastern Libya that he said had thrown Libya into disarray. Fighting continued for several weeks, and Heftar gained the support of the countrys military. Heftar served under Qaddafi but split from him in the 1980s. He also accused Prime Minister Maiteg of being under the sway of the Islamic militias.

Libyas transitional Parliament elected Ahmed Maitiq, a prominent businessman from Misurata, as prime minister in May 2014. The Supreme Court, however, ruled that the election was unconstitutional, and he resigned. Thinni remained in office as interim prime minister.

Parliamentary elections were held in late June 2014, and because the populace had largely lost confidence in government as militias continued to yield tremendous power, turnout and interest in the race were low. In light of the violence between rival militias in Tripoli, the new

The social media celebrity was rounded up alongside 12 others for their involvement in a series of cyber crime activities targeting companies and individuals.

The 38-year-old, who authorities identified as Raymond Abbas, is known for his ostentatious lifestyle and flaunting of his wealth and luxurious acquisitions on social media.

Mr. Abbas is also wanted for other fraud crimes in his home country of Nigeria as well as Europe and the United States.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has reacted to Hushpuppi’s arrest, claiming he is “Nigeria’s most-wanted hacker” in a statement on Thursday.

Referring to Hushpuppi as Ramoni Igbalode and not Raymond Abbas, the commission also confirmed his arrest in the United Arab Emirates for his alleged involvement in a “$35 million ventilator scam.”

Algiers — Several decisions were unanimously adopted at the 179th meeting of the Conference of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the 11th OPEC and Non-OPEC ministerial meeting held Saturday to stabilize the oil market, the Energy Ministry said in a statement.

Taking into account the current fundamentals and the recent prospects of the international oil market, the countries participating in the proceedings of the 11th ministerial meeting of Opep and non-Opep countries and the 179th Opep Ministerial Conference, under the chairmanship of Minister of Energy and current Chairman of OPEC Conference Mohamed Arkab, have decided to take several decisions aimed at ensuring the stability of the black gold prices, the same source said.

The other decision endorsed by the Opec and non-Opec countries is the decision to convene the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) every month to monitor the implementation of the oil supply reduction agreement.

In this context, the 11th meeting of the Opec + countries reaffirmed the continuing commitment of the producer countries signatories of the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) to a \"stable market, in the mutual interest of the producer countries, the efficient and secure supply of oil to consumers and in the interest of the world economy.\"

Announcing that the next meeting of the Joint Ministerial Follow-up Committee (JMMC) is scheduled for 18 June, the Opec and non-Opec countries agreed to hold a ministerial meeting in Vienna on 1 December.

Ole Sereni, a four-star hotel bordering Nairobi National Park, has introduced social distancing conferencing in which seats are about two metres apart in all directions.

Lockdown of five hotspot counties and the months-long dusk-to-dawn curfew may be removed in the coming days, the President said, adding that Kenyans will have to learn to live with the virus.

Before that, the government had announced a 21-day extension of the night curfew and lockdowns affecting Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Mandera counties to June 6.

Those that can afford will provide transport to staff to limit their exposure to coronavirus as much as possible

The elevator, a key daily conduit for thousands of people, is a potential place for infections.

Companies have given guidelines reducing the number of people that can use a lift at a time.

Foreign donor nations pledged $1.8 billion at a conference hosted by Germany to help Sudan ease an economic crisis hampering its transition towards democracy after the fall of Omar al-Bashir.

The two Gulf countries had promised a grant to Sudan of $3 billion in the form of cash and commodities after the military ousted Bashir in April 2019, but it is unclear how much has reached the country in total.

World Bank to offer Sudan grant

\tThe World Bank’s David Malpass said the institution was in the process of securing a $400 million “pre-arrears clearance grant” for Sudan, to be approved by August.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, running Sudan under a precarious, transitional power-sharing deal with the military since Bashir’s overthrow in an uprising last year, is desperate for more foreign support.

The pledges were well below the $8 billion in aid that Hamdok said last August was needed to turn around an economy in crisis since Sudan lost almost all its oil revenue when South Sudan seceded in 2011.

Worldwide lockdowns, shrinking demand and a supply glut have sent shockwaves through the oil gas sector, plus oil-reliant economies in the Middle East.

Oil prices have made historic slides this year, and in April, US futures crashed below zero for the first time.

Dr. John Sfakianakis speaks to Inspire Middle East

\t“Nobody is insulated really, but there are certain countries – such as the UAE – which is better positioned to overcome the crisis,” says Dr. John Sfakianakis, the chief economist of Gulf Research Center in Saudi Arabia and a senior scholar at Cambridge University.

Saudi Arabia outlook

\tSaudi Arabia’s measures, to offset the economic impact of COVID-19 and fluctuating oil prices, have included a tripling of VAT and an injection over $13 billion dollars into the banking system.

This crisis finds Saudi with around $465 billion dollars, so, it’s a different situation,” said Dr. Sfakianakis of the region’s largest economy.

Libya's internationally recognised government has launched air strikes against forces loyal to renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar after his forces announced they were pulling back from Tripoli front lines.

Air strikes by the Government of National Accord (GNA) targeted several locations in the west of the country, including in the Haftar stronghold of Tarhouna near the capital, Tripoli, according to GNA army spokesperson Colonel Mohamed Qanunu.

Last month, the GNA took a string of small towns linking Tripoli to the Tunisian border.

Last month, GNA Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha said capturing Tarhouna would end Haftar's campaign to seize Tripoli, but that the fighting in the capital was the priority.

An LNA military source told Reuters news agency that in Tripoli the LNA had completed a gradual withdrawal from the Salahedin battlefront, one of the main theatres of fighting in the capital.

Rwanda on Thursday recorded 18 new coronavirus cases, the highest of the week, contributed mainly by citizens arriving from neighbouring countries.

The country has seen a rise in the number of positive cases since the beginning of June and has placed two border districts – Rusizi and Rubavu bordering the DRC – under total lockdown even as the rest of the country slowly eases back to normal life.

Coronavirus was detected among clusters of Rwandans repatriated from Tanzania and DR Congo, which led to the surge in the identified cases, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, Director of Rwanda Biomedical Centre, told The East African.

No positive cases were reported from another group of 53 Rwandans repatriated from the United Arab Emirates in late April, most of who have been left quarantine and joined their families.

A group of 130 Rwandans coming from Uganda last week are also under quarantine, but no positive cases have been reported among them.
