Ivorian authorities are concerned about locals slacking off coronavirus-prevention measures in light of a drop in daily new infections in the country.
Burundi’s new president has signaled that his government will take the coronavirus pandemic more seriously than his dead predecessor, calling the virus the country’s “worst enemy” and announcing new screenings.
President Evariste Ndayishimiye on Tuesday said the screenings will be launched wherever clusters of cases are suspected, and that soap prices and water bills will be reduced.
Predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza died last month of what Burundi’s government called a heart attack. His government had been criticized not taking the pandemic seriously.
It kicked out the World Health Organization’s country director, allowed large campaign rallies ahead of the presidential election in May and expressed the belief that divine protection would largely suffice for protection.
Some countries and human rights groups have expressed hope that the new president, an ally of Nkurunziza, might break with certain ways of his predecessor.
Burundi has 170 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Lawmakers did set aside $30 billion for smaller lenders, in part with the aim of helping business owners of color — like Ugboajah.
But a new report from the Small Business Administration's inspector general found that businesses owned by people of color may not have received loans as intended under the Paycheck Protection Program.
Without that information for past loans, it will be hard to know how well the program served business owners of color.
Some businesses owned by one person — such as some sole proprietorships, like Ugboajah's Neka Creative — were only allowed to apply for funds one week after other businesses.
Ugboajah has six people on her team — and they're all contractors — making her business one of those one-person sole proprietorships.

The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, announced a one-month extension of the state of emergency decreed at the end of March to combat the coronavirus, double the usual duration, adding that there would no longer be a curfew.
“The state of emergency has been extended but there will be no curfew,” President Embalo told reporters.
According to a presidential decree issued in the wake, the head of state believes that a period of 15 days, the duration so far of the six successive state of emergency measures taken, “is insufficient for an adequate and effective response” to the health situation.
The state of emergency has been extended but there will be no curfew.
According to the decree, the state of emergency, which expired on Thursday, is therefore extended “by 30 days” until 25 July.
There are many possible definitions of procrastination, but, in essence, procrastination is the practice of doing less urgent or unimportant tasks instead of more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable activities instead of less pleasurable ones.
Wasted prayer uncovers the ways we use prayer to dodge responsibility for the work God has assigned to us.
Another lovely quote on procrastination was written by Charles Dickens: “Procrastination is the thief of time, collar him.”
So many people spend their precious time doing what they don’t need to do or working on their least important task.
If we work on the most important task first, and follow a strict schedule, procrastination will be a mere distant memory.
