Proctalgia fugax is a fairly common anorectal disorder that affects both men and women, with more prevalence in the latter sex. It's characterized by intermittent spasmodic episodes of sharp, stabbing pain which is always limited to the anus or lower rectum and can last from mere seconds up to 20 minutes.
