One day after accepting the resignation of Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks announced Friday the police department's second-in-command will take over.
"Not only am I interim chief of police for the Prince George's County Police Department, but I am also your interim chief of police."
She highlighted how Stawinski's years as chief since 2016 helped the department decrease violent crimes by 50 percent, open two new district police stations in Fort Washington and Forestville and created "Chief on the Go," a program held at least once a month where Stawinski would chat with community leaders and residents about public safety issues.
A report released Thursday details more than two dozen incidents in which white police officers used racial slurs about officers and those in the community, white officers not disciplined for various incidents and Black and Latino officers transferred to other officers for speaking out against unjust behavior.
The report, written by Michael E. Graham, a former 33-year veteran with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, said some of the department's policies provide "deficient" protection for officers to raise claims of misconduct against other officers.
