A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe Monday appealed for equitable access to Covid-19 tools as the government moves to set up laboratories at border points.

During the daily press briefing on Monday, Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman said the government is planning to set up Covid-19 laboratories at border points to bolster testing capacity and reduce tests turnaround time.

The CAS said the government will expand the testing process to include restaurants, border points and communities as well as other high risk areas.

He added: \"The problem we may have is along the Tanzania border whether it is Isebania, Namanga or Taita Taveta because we do not have a functional laboratory yet, that can do the tests in those places,\" he added.

Dr Aman said the turnaround time at the border will be reduced to at least 24 hours once the laboratory is commissioned.

Addressing the press on Friday in Juba, Dr Makur Koriom, the spokesman of the High-Level Taskforce says apart from the two deaths, the country also recorded four new Covid-19 cases on Friday.

This brings the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Sudan to 235,” he added.

South Sudan recorded its first Covid-19 case on April 5.

Last week, different South Sudanese stakeholders criticised President Kiir for lifting Covid-19 restrictions, warning that country may experience a full blown out of the pandemic.

The Ministry of Health is banking on the community policing groups such as the Nyumba Kumi Initiative, local administration and estate groups to monitor the Covid-19 patients on home-based care.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi said this on Monday when she announced 59 new Covid-19 cases, raising the national tally to 4,797.

She said this as the government released more than 600 Covid-19 patients showing no symptoms for home-based care, stepping up its plans to free-up bed spaces for seriously-ill patients in hospitals.

The ministry launched the home-based care a fortnight ago to lessen the burden being borne by public facilities owing to the increasing number of Covid-19 patients.

Algeria will keep its land, air and sea borders closed until the end of the COVID-19 crisis. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday announced this saying also that firmer measures will be taken against citizens who do not respect preventive measures.

Algeria closed all border crossing points with neighboring nations and suspended all flights and sea voyages since mid March. It reported 305 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 13,273 with 897 deaths.

Now what is responsible for this spike and how well has the fight against the virus in the country worked if many cases are still being recorded?

George Floyd, whose death has sparked worldwide massive protests, tested positive for the coronavirus in a new autopsy report released on Thursday.

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker said Floyd was likely asymptomatic and was not related to his death.

A report released on Monday by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office said Floyd died of “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression.”

The Floyd family hired Dr. Michael Baden.

Baden’s autopsy reported Floyd died as a result of compression on his neck and back from the officer, which blocked his blood flow and breathing.

More than 100 Ugandans have so far been infected with coronavirus through contact with interstate truck drivers or other confirmed cases, according to Ministry of Health statistics.

Health officials and the medical fraternity are worried that the rapid increase in the number of cases and their contacts could overwhelm the hospitals thus causing difficulty in management of cases.

Uganda has so far registered a total of 457 cases of which more than 50 are contacts of truck drivers while the rest are community infections.

Dr Ayella Ataro, the vice president Uganda medical association, said the increase in the number of cases is worrying and points a big challenge for the country.

Dr Moriku Kaducu, the Minister of State for Primary Healthcare, said the increase in the number of case means more stress of contact identification, follow up as well as strengthening surveillance system.

Three-year-old among Bartica’s four new COVID-19 cases -health officer, mayor in appeals for precautions to be taken seriously

Four persons, including a three-year-old child, have tested positive for COVID-19 at Bartica as cases in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region continue to rise.

The four persons are relatives of Bartica’s first known novel coronavirus disease patient, who tested positive for the respiratory disease last Wednesday.

The patient, who was displaying critical symptoms of the disease, was transferred to an isolation facility in Georgetown on the same date, while samples were taken from ten persons who had close contact with the patient.

Regional Health Officer (RHO) Edward Sagala announced yesterday that the results of nine of the ten persons had returned and four were positive.

“All of the contacts are from Bartica and are now in institutional isolation for 14 days, as is mandated by the COVID-19 guidelines, then they will be retested,” Sagala noted.
