A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), the Chair of the House Financial Services Committee and a member of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, introduced the Affordable Insulin for the COVID-19 Emergency Act today.

“The Affordable Insulin for the COVID-19 Emergency Act will ensure that seniors are able to afford a sufficient supply of insulin to manage their diabetes effectively without leaving the safety of their homes.”

The Affordable Insulin for the COVID-19 Emergency Act will require that seniors who are enrolled in Medicare Part D prescription drug plans be able to obtain insulin and associated medical supplies to manage their diabetes without copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, or other cost-sharing between now and the end of the COVID-19 emergency.

“The Affordable Insulin for the COVID-19 Emergency Act marks a key step in protecting Americans living with diabetes at this unusually difficult time for the diabetes community,” said Tracey Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association.

“COVID-19 is having a disproportionate impact on seniors, and seniors with diabetes face particularly high risks,” said Congresswoman Waters.

Kamala Harris was born Oct. 20, 1964, to a black Stanford University professor and a Tamil Indian physician mother, Harris became the first California attorney general with African American or South Asian ancestry after defeating Republican rival Steve Cooley in the 2010 election for the position. Harris, formerly San Franciscos district attorney, is also the first woman to serve in the role.

Kamala Devi Harris was born and raised in San Franciscos East Bay where she attended public schools, worshipped at black churches and lived in predominantly African American communities.

Her immersion in African American culture didnt prevent her from being exposed to Indian culture, though.

Her breast cancer specialist mother took Harris to Hindu temples to worship. Moreover, Harris is no stranger to India, having visited the subcontinent on several occasions to see relatives. Her bicultural heritage and travels around the globe have inspired political insiders to compare her with President Barack Obama. Although Obama sometimes struggled with identity issues, as he describes in memoir Dreams from My Father, Harris evidently didnt experience growing pains in this vein.

I grew up in a family where I had a strong sense of my culture and who I am, and I never felt insecure about that at all, she told the Associated Press. Slowly, perhaps…, people will start to understand the diversity of the people.

After graduating from high school, Harris left the East Bay to attend Howard University, a historically black academic institution.

She earned a bachelors degree from Howard in 1986 and then returned to the Bay Area in Northern California. Upon her return, she enrolled at Hastings College of the Law, where she earned a law degree. Following that accomplishment, Harris proceeded to leave her mark on the legal arena of San Francisco.

Speaking to the Southern Eye at Ekusileni Medical Centre yesterday #IAM4BYO chairperson Busisa Moyo said the hospital might start taking in patients in July depending on donations received.

Companies such as Edgars, National Tested Seeds, Innscor Africa, and #IAM4BYO in the United States of America among others donated various items to the institution.

He said government had also put in lot of resources towards equipping the centre.

NETONE acting chief executive Chipo Jaisson stepped down this week after leading the country’s second largest mobile telecommunications company for nine months. BY PRIMROSE HAISA In an internal circular to employees this week, Jaisson who reverts back to her previous position as head of finance, cited personal reasons. “I am stepping down due to family commitments. Thank you very much for the tremendous support you gave me during my nine months tenure,” she said. IT specialist Raphael Mushanawani, who was the acting chief technology officer, has now taken over as acting CE. During Jaisson’s tenure, NetOne was the only mobile operator which increased market share, according to the recently released second quarter report by the regulator, from 24,2%% to 25,8% in the three months to June. NetOne has in recent years been hit by boardroom squabbles. Resignations of board members and firing of senior managers have dominated events at the institution while the substantive chief executive Lazarus Muchenje is on suspension with a court case pending.
