Chadwick Boseman and the Legacy of Black Panther (2018) In February 2018, Black Panther debuted in theaters and became a cultural landmark in Black representation. Starring Chadwick Boseman as King T’Challa, the film celebrated African heritage and featured a predominantly Black cast, a rarity for a mainstream superhero blockbuster. The film grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing solo superhero movie at the time. Black Panther’s success paved the way for more Black-led films in Hollywood and showcased the power of authentic storytelling rooted in African culture and Afrofuturism. 2. Jay-Z Honored with NAACP President’s Award (2019) In 2019, Jay-Z was awarded the prestigious NAACP President’s Award for his contributions to music, business, and social justice initiatives. Recognized not only for his legendary rap career but also for his efforts in criminal justice reform, Jay-Z has been a vocal advocate for Black economic empowerment. His company, Roc Nation, has worked on initiatives to provide legal aid for wrongfully convicted individuals and to support Black-owned businesses. Colin Kaepernick’s “Know Your Rights” Movement Expands (2020-Present) Since first taking a knee in 2016 to protest racial injustice, Colin Kaepernick has remained an influential figure in the fight for equality. His Know Your Rights Camp, which aims to educate Black and Brown youth about their legal rights, has grown in scope in recent years. In 2020, amid the surge of activism following the killing of George Floyd, Kaepernick expanded the initiative to provide legal support and educational resources nationwide.
