As protests over racial injustice consume the nation, African Americans and other minorities face a wave of rental evictions as a temporary federal moratorium comes to an end in just a matter of weeks.
Additionally, a federal increase in unemployment benefits that many laid-off workers used to pay their rent will end July 31.
“How many people are going to be homeless?”
"How many people are going to lose their homes, and what are you as an administration going to do about it?"
While Carson's office has not provided an estimate of how many people stand to be evicted when the moratorium ends, the mandate, which covers evictions and not rent payments, stands to affect nearly 26 million people who will have trouble coming up with the rent by September, according to Zach Neumann of the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project.
