Autopsies of 10 Black victims of the novel coronavirus showed their lungs were filled with blood clots, medical researchers found.
A team at the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Medicine reported Wednesday that the patients had underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity but noted that genetic factors also may have contributed to their demise.
“We found that the small vessels and capillaries in the lungs were obstructed by blood clots and associated hemorrhage that significantly contributed to decompensation and death in these patients,” said Dr. Richard Vander Heide, head of pathology at the school, CNN reported.
