He replaces Debretsion Gebremichael, whose immunity from prosecution was removed Thursday.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International said Thursday that scores of civilians were killed in a \"massacre\" in the Tigray region, that witnesses blamed on forces backing the local ruling party.

The \"massacre\" is the first reported incident of large-scale civilian fatalities in a week-old conflict between the regional ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, winner of last year's Nobel Peace Prize.

\"Amnesty International can today confirm... that scores, and likely hundreds, of people were stabbed or hacked to death in Mai-Kadra (May Cadera) town in the southwest of Ethiopia's Tigray Region on the night of 9 November,\" the rights group said in a report.

Amnesty said it had \"digitally verified gruesome photographs and videos of bodies strewn across the town or being carried away on stretchers.\"

The dead \"had gaping wounds that appear to have been inflicted by sharp weapons such as knives and machetes,\" Amnesty said, citing witness accounts.

Witnesses said the attack was carried out by TPLF-aligned forces after a defeat at the hands of the Ethiopian military, though Amnesty said it \"has not been able to confirm who was responsible for the killings\".

It nonetheless called on TPLF commanders and officials to \"make clear to their forces and their supporters that deliberate attacks on civilians are absolutely prohibited and constitute war crimes\".

Abiy ordered military operations in Tigray on November 4, saying they were prompted by a TPLF attack on federal military camps -- a claim the party denies.

The region has been under a communications blackout ever since, making it difficult to verify competing claims on the ground.

Abiy said Thursday his army had made major gains in western Tigray.

Thousands of Ethiopians have fled across the border into neighboring Sudan, and the UN is sounding the alarm about a humanitarian crisis in Tigray.

20 people died following a shipwreck off the Libyan coast, Doctors without Borders said Thursday. The incident occurred just hours after at least 74 migrants also died in a similar incident.

\"Two days ago, our boat set off to Italy from a site near al-Khums, at about nine o'clock at night. And yesterday, at two thirty in the morning our boat broke down and many people died at sea'', Mukhtar Salem Mohammed, Ghanaian migrant said.

Traumatized survivors sat in shock on the shore while others wrapped closely under blankets as aid workers distributed food parcels.

\"When we arrived on site, we found the corpses of 31 migrants on the shore of the beach. We also found 47 survivors, all of them African nationals, including even women and children\", an Immigration official at the Ministry of Interior for the Government of National Accord, Mukhtar Salem Mohammed said.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said so far this year, over 900 people have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe. More than 11,000 others have been returned to Libya, it added, \"putting them at risk of facing human rights violations\".

Human traffickers have taken advantage of persistent violence in Libya since the overthrow of leader Muammar Gadhafi, turning the country into a key corridor for migrants fleeing war and poverty in desperate attempts to reach Europe.

While many have drowned at sea, thousands have been intercepted by the Libyan coastguard and returned to Libya. The Libya Coastguard has been backed by Italy and the EU. The migrants mostly end up in detention and often in horrific conditions.

We also found 47 survivors, all of them African nationals, including even women and children\", an Immigration official at the Ministry of Interior for the Government of National Accord, Mukhtar Salem Mohammed said. \n\nThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) said so far this year, over 900 people have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe. More than 11,000 others have been returned to Libya, it added, \"putting them at risk of facing human rights violations\". \n\nHuman traffickers have taken advantage of persistent violence in Libya since the overthrow of leader Muammar Gadhafi, turning the country into a key corridor for migrants fleeing war and poverty in desperate attempts to reach Europe. \n\nWhile many have drowned at sea, thousands have been intercepted by the Libyan coastguard and returned to Libya. The Libya Coastguard has been backed by Italy and the EU. The migrants mostly end up in detention and often in horrific conditions.","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.com/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2020/11/cae619c3-650c-485e-af14-183ff2688ab8.jpg","ImageHeight":538,"ImageWidth":1024,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"42C8FAC1-E2C7-4A09-8CA5-16C843DEC99E","SourceName":"Africanews | Latest breaking news, daily news and African news from Africa","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.africanews.com","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":"92D93880-697A-445C-AED2-13BC576DD2C3","IsSponsored":true,"SponsorName":"Eastern Bank","SmallSponsorLogoUrl":"24x24/eb-logo-24.png","SponsorUrl":"https://www.easternbank.com/","HasSmallSponsorLogo":true,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":null,"IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-11-13T20:09:08Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":191581,"FactUId":"A33557A6-D2D0-4EFF-B4D6-7713A0E00559","Slug":"libya-20-die-in-shipwreck-survivors-get-help-africanews","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Libya: 20 die in shipwreck, survivors get help | Africanews","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/libya-20-die-in-shipwreck-survivors-get-help-africanews","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":true,"SponsorRedirectUrl":null,"SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/a0497ab8-a6ae-40d5-ad96-651f6942e621/9c785ca3-a4c3-4c18-9b15-8870fe545cd0/https%3A%2F%2Forlandoadvocate.com","DisplayText":"

Post-Electoral Crisis

Violence erupted in many parts of Côte d'Ivoire after the Constitutional Council officially validated on November 9 the re-election of President Alassane Ouattara for a controversial third term.

However, the political unrest in the small landlocked city of M'Batto was exacerbated by circulating false information. Dr Jean Serge Kouassi Kouassi, the director of the M'Batto hospital, shares his insight into the situation of the ground,  \"When this information arrived on social media, the phone calls rained down on us to find out if it was true and what was going on. So that's it. Everyone reassured their parents stating that there were indeed skirmishes here, there were shootings and we could hear shots, and we would send the wounded to the hospital.\"

Problematic Fake News

M'Batto fell victim to fictitious gendarmerie reports and press releases about so-called fatalities — as well as misleading and inappropriate images trending online. All of which did not help the already tense political atmosphere. Abdoulaye Konaté, a teacher, outlines what was really happening to contribute to the regional tension,  \"The rumours were: such and such shop was burned, so and so was killed, so every time one of the parties heard, everyone wanted revenge, so that's what made the situation even worse. It was the rumours themselves that made the situation worse.\"

Inter-ethnic Friction

An opposition demonstration degenerated into inter-community clashes between Agni (local ethnic group reputed pro-opposition) and Dioula (an ethnic group from the north reputed pro-Ouattara). The electoral unrest saw the loss of six lives.  Nanan Béda Kadio II, the Chief of the Agnikro district, expressed his peaceful stance,

\"We don't want war here. We have been here for several years, there is no war between us. Before this year, we had never seen anything like this. So I wouldn't like it to happen again. I want peace in my village of M'Batto.\"

Armed forces have now been stationed across the city of 50,000 inhabitants to prevent any further confrontation and many shops have been closed.

BY FREEMAN MAKOPA Zimbabwe’s netball team captain Felisitus Kwanga has broken boundaries after being signed by an English netball team, Surrey Storm which is based at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. Commenting on the club’s website Director of Netball Head Coach/Player of Surrey Storm Mikki Austin expressed satisfaction over the signing of Kwanga who is expected to add up to their defensive end. “New to Surrey Storm for this season, we are so excited to have an athlete of Felisitus’ calibre joining our defensive end. “As an athlete who has stood out head and shoulders for her ability to win the ball for Zimbabwe at Netball World Cup 2019, we cannot wait to see her compete again in duck egg blue,” she said. The 25-year-old goal defender was brilliant during the recent 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool staged in July, scooping Most Valuable Player award against Northern Ireland and Barbados. Her brilliance grabbed the attention of international clubs.. Kwanga led the competition in deflections and was sixth for intercepts as Zimbabwe were named team of the tournament and will now make the move to the Superleague, where she will join Mikki Austin’s impressive side for the new season. She will link up with Aussie Leah Middleton and Northern Ireland international Niamh Cooper in the Storm defence. Kwanga became part of the senior netball team in 2014 and a year later she was named the vice-captain and proceeded to shine at the 2017 Tri-Nations Tournament and at the 2019 Telkom Tournament in SA held in May where she was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) a feat that, with so much ease. Kwanga is Surrey Storm’s final signing of the signing window.

The United Nations has called for urgent measures to protect civilians in northeastern Mozambique, who have fallen victim to an Islamist rebellion.

The jihadists attacked villages and killed several people in the Cabo Delgado province this week.

Rupert Colville is spokesman for the UN Human rights High Commissioner. He says the situation is now desperate.

\"The situation is desperate both for those trapped in conflict-affected areas, with barely any means of surviving, and for those displaced across the province and beyond. Those who remain have been left deprived of basic necessities and are at risk of being killed, sexually assaulted, abused, kidnapped, or forcibly recruited by armed groups\", Colville said.

The killing of civilians and clashes with security forces in various parts of Cabo Delgado province, have increased in recent weeks.

The UN sees the human rights situation \"increasingly alarming\".

Dozens of people are reported to have died and hundreds forced to flee their homes, the High Commissioner's office said.

According to the United Nations, over 350,000 people have been displaced due to violence in the region in the last three years.

It also said since October 16, more than 14,000 people have fled by sea. At least one boat has capsized, which is estimated to have killed about 40 people, including children. The Office of the High Commissioner fears that thousands more people are trapped in the conflict zones, many hiding for days.

The UN is also calling on Mozambican authorities to throw light on accusations of human rights violations against their security forces in recent years, including extrajudicial executions and ill-treatment.
