Voter turnout was almost 80%. \n\n\t Political tensions in the West African nation turned violent in recent days after Diallo claimed victory ahead of the official results. Celebrations by his supporters were suppressed when security forces fired tear gas to disperse them. \n\nThey accuse the electoral authorities of rigging the vote for incumbent president Alpha Conde. \n\n\n\t At least nine people have been killed since the election, according to the government. The African Union (AU) has suspended South Sudan from the continental body over failure to honour its financial obligations over the past three years.

In clarifying the extent of the suspension, Hakim Edward, deputy Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, said Juba’s AU membership attained in July 2011 remained intact except that the country cannot participate in AU meetings.

“We would like to confirm to the public that South Sudan is one of the countries that have been sanctioned by the AU due to lack of yearly financial contributions,” Edward said in a statement late last week.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to assure the public that it is coordinating with the ministry of finance to resolve the matter not only with the AU but with other regional bodies,” he added.

Local news outlet Eye Radio also reported that South Sudan has a lot of unpaid arrears to regional, international, and global bodies it subscribes to.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on Thursday asked UK citizens to be cautious and cited \"possible clashes throughout the country\" during the November 28 inauguration.

\"Political tensions are high and demonstrations and clashes are possible throughout the country, particularly in the western region; you should exercise caution and, where possible, avoid travelling around areas where demonstrations may take place,\" the FCO said in a statement.

The office is anticipating possible demonstrations and clashes during the inauguration and Britons planning to visit Kenya during this period have been asked to exercise caution and, where possible, avoid travelling around areas where demonstrations may take place.

The areas where FCO advises against all but essential travel does not include Kenya's safari destinations.

In April, when political parties were scheduled to hold their nominations ahead of the deadline by the electoral commission, UK advised its nationals against all but essential travel to north eastern counties of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera as well as Eastleigh in Nairobi.

In light of Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo’s re-election for a second term in office on Wednesday — a result his rival John Mahama's camp said it would appeal, supporters of the president’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) are celebrating the win. Prince Ofori, an NPP Supporter, is ecstatic to know his chosen president will stay in office,  \"NDC, the opposition party. We have retired them. They don't have anything to do anymore. We are the government in power, our president Nana Akufo Addo. The champion president. The number one.\"

According to the electoral commission, Akufo-Addo received 51.59% of the vote in the presidential race — beating opposition leader and former president Mahama's 47.36%.

The announcement on Wednesday was greeted with chanting and dancing by a crowd of supporters in the seaside capital Accra. On the other hand, the opposition has called the election \"flawed.\"

Nyarko, another NPP Supporter, could not contain his pleasure in knowing that the opposition will not take power,  \"The NDC are liars. We no longer like John Mahama. We want peace in Ghana. We want Nana Akufo Addo.\"

Polling was observed as fair in the West African country known for its stable democracy.

However, the political climate soured late Tuesday resulting in 5 people dead and 19 injured in electoral-related violence.

In 1913 the famous African American activist and educator Booker T. Washington left Tuskegee, Alabama, to begin a speaking tour around the United States. The ultimate goal of this tour was to raise funds for the Tuskegee Institute in order to educate more young African Americans. Washington began touring the Northwest, a place he had never before seen, in March of 1913, beginning with Montana, before traveling further west through Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Along the way, while commenting on the impressive features of the Pacific Northwest landscape, he spent three days in Spokane, Washington, visiting several local landmarks and speaking to numerous audiences in the city.

Booker T. Washington’s message of self-help and uplift in order to improve the standing of the African American in America resonated well with people of all races in Spokane. Many leaders of the black community in the young city closely heeded his words, including Reverend Peter Barrow, who was inspired by Washington to create a large African American-operated apple orchard north of Spokane. When he arrived in Spokane, Washington was well received, and as a result, his three days were quite busy.

Washington spoke to nine separate audiences during his visit. Among these was Lewis and Clark High School, a new school where its cornerstone had been laid a few short years earlier by President Theodore Roosevelt, a friend of Washington’s. Here Washington spoke of his young days as a slave, as well as his experiences founding and running the Tuskegee Institute and the importance of education.

Washington also spoke at the Spokane Federation of Women’s Clubs. The Federation hosted a reception for the Tuskegee educator.  Washington was expecting to speak to a group of all-white women. When he arrived, though, he discovered that the members of the Colored Women’s Club were invited to hear him speak as well. After he inquired, he discovered that it was a normal occurrence for the groups to meet together in Spokane. Washington realized, however, that

The Catholic church in the Democratic Republic of Congo has waded into the political crisis that has gripped the country calling for a divorce between the two coalitions running the affairs of the state.

On Tuesday (June 30) Archbishop of Kinshasa, Frindolin Ambongo has called for the dissolution of the political alliance between President Tshisekedi and his predecessor Kabila.

The cleric cited mistrust among members of Kabila’s Common Front of Congo, FCC and the president’s Union for Democracy and Social Progress, UPDS.

He noted the current political tension has been stoked by MPs of former president Joseph Kabila’s Common Front for Congo which has a parliamentary majority.

Monsignor Ambongo also accused the president of the Congolese national assembly of ‘contempt’ by renewing the mandate of the head of the country’s electoral commission.

'Pattern of disappearances and torture'

Their rearrest came as the United Nations expressed its concerns over what it calls a \"reported pattern of disappearances and torture that appear aimed at suppressing protests and dissent\" in Zimbabwe.

\"Government does not engage or permit any of its agencies and institutions to use any methods such as torture, forced disappearances or abductions,\" Zimbabwe's home affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe said at a press conference last week.

\"Zimbabwe's failure to decisively deal with cases of abductions disappearances and torture severely undermines the standing of the country within the international community,\" said Human Rights Watch Southern Africa Director Dewa Mavhinga.

In early 2000, rights violations resulted in the sanctioning of political leaders in Zimbabwe, then ruled by Robert Mugabe.

Failure to do so undermines the country's reengagement efforts with the international community,\" Dewa Mavhinga told DW.

Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa has told the MDC to blame its founding leader the late Morgan Tsvangirai for the chaos in the opposition party.

The MDC Alliance, however, accuses Zanu PF of using state institutions to destabilise the opposition and to force Chamisa to legitimise Mnangagwa’s presidency.

“Zanu PF has nothing to do with the squabbles within the MDC.

He added: “The MDC took each other to court, to the [second] highest court and the court pronounced that what the late Tsvangirai had done was illegal.

Zanu PF was not there when they went to court; Zanu PF was not there when Tsvangirai tore up the constitution.”

As the country continues to fight tirelessly to control the spread of Covid-19, a total of 5 million children are set to benefit from the three phase program of World Vision aimed at mitigating the after-effects of the pandemic in the vulnerable community.

The Government together with World Vision on Wednesday launched the second phase response program where it dispersed USD 3.3 million (Shs 15 billion), that will be used to buy reading materials for children and facilitating radio programs in 38 districts.

According to World Vision national director Mr Jason Evans, the expanded response will focus on support for children impacted by Covid-19 through education, child protection, food and livelihoods.

With this phase two response program here in Uganda, world vision aims to support 5 million Ugandan children, their families and communities to adapt and thrive during and after the Covid-19 pandemic,\" Mr Evans said.

According to the Mr Evans, the program will include supporting learning continuity for school age children, ensuring effective reporting and referral mechanisms for child protection are maintained, increasing food and nutrition security of the most vulnerable households during and post Covid-19 as well as facilitating radio station teachings programs for children.
