The clashes erupted as soon as provisional results released by the electoral commission showed president Alpha Conde winning with a big margin.  \n\nConde, 82, won twice as many votes as his nearest rival, opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo, with 37 of 38 districts counted, according to preliminary results from the commission. \n\n\nOpposition supporters accuse the electoral authorities of rigging the vote for incumbent president Alpha Conde. \n\nSekou Koundouno, head of mobilisation for the opposition coalition FNDC said Conde had committed 'high treason'.  \n\n\"He is an illegal and illegitimate candidate who is stubbornly pursuing his obsession to turn Guin ea into a monarchy in which, by the way, he will dictate orders to his subjects,\" said Kounduno.  \n\nDiallo maintains that he won with a landslide despite irregularities, according to his own tally. He remains barricaded in his home which security forces have besieged since Monday. \n\nICC warning  \n\nThe International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor warned on Friday that warring factions in Guinea could be prosecuted after fighting erupted. \n\n\n“I wish to repeat this important reminder: anyone who commits, orders, incites, encourages and contributes in any other way to crimes … is liable to prosecution either by the Guinean courts or the ICC,” she said. \n\n\n#ICC Prosecutor #FatouBensouda: "I wish to repeat this important reminder: anyone who commits, orders, incites, encourages or contributes, in any other way, to the commission of #RomeStatute crimes, is liable to prosecution either by #Guinean courts or by the #ICC."\r\n— Int'l Criminal Court (@IntlCrimCourt) October 23, 2020 \n\n\nMany people have been killed since clashes began on Monday. BY PRAISEMORE SITHOLE A NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation is targeting to generate at least 3 328 jobs for smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe as a COVID-19 mitigation strategy. The organisation, Hand in Hand Zimbabwe (HIHZIM) specialises in capacitating marginalised people in rural communities, particularly women and the youths to create better livelihoods for themselves and their families. The organisation intends to achieve this through imparting skills where they undergo training for six months on a six modular business development programme. The organisation has since 2015, created 13 187 jobs for community members in rural Zimbabwe. HIHZIM chief executive Felix Tete told NewsDay that the organisation would continue to support rural small-holder farmers through job creation, to ensure food security and improved household incomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Since 2015, we have created 13 187 jobs for villagers in rural Zimbabwe. This year, we are targeting to create 3 328 jobs to empower small-holder farmers so that they can mitigate the effects of the pandemic,” Tete said. “This drive aims to create productive employment opportunities for rural folks so as to alleviate poverty within their communities, which is being worsened by the deadly pandemic. Unemployment lies at the core of poverty. For the vulnerable rural populace, labour is often the only asset they can use to improve their wellbeing.” Tete said the creation of productive employment opportunities was essential for achieving poverty reduction and sustainable socio-economic development. “The impact of COVID-19 on rural people has been brutal as measures to limit the spread of the pandemic have led to restrictions in trade and movement. This has prevented entrepreneurs from accessing markets to sell their produce and to buy inputs.” Edith Mahu (62), a member of a thriving garden that HIHZIM supports in Shurugwi district said the organisation had greatly aided her and 17 other members of the project. “The earnings from the horticultural venture have enabled us to taste financial freedom. We were living in abject poverty, but HIHZIM came and gave us hope. I can only imagine how we were also going to survive during this COVID-19 phase. “Monetary challenges are now a thing of the past for us. During COVID-19, we are still selling our produce to the local markets and getting money.' The organisation is presently supporting communities in seven districts, namely Bulilima, Chikomba, Chirumanzu, Gwanda, Lupane, Nkayi and Shurugwi. Follow Praisemore on Twitter@TPraisemore

BY VANESSA GONYE THE Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs has said the government lacks commitment in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and relies on third parties for knowledge on the matter. This was revealed in a report by the committee on the 2021 national budget, which was presented recently in the National Assembly by Bacillia Majaya (MDC Alliance). Majaya said although Treasury supported most of the bids for GBV programmes, the unallocated bit amounting to $15 million could have gone a long way in supporting such programmes. “In its response to GBV, the government has had to rely on statistics from partners about GBV due to lack of own support services in the form of one-stop centres,” Majaya said. “The need for institutional support services for GBV can never be overstated. Treasury needs to consider a budget towards the construction of one-stop centres starting with Chipinge and Matabeleland North. An allocation of $15 million will close the existing resource gap for one-stop centres.” Majaya said in areas hit by national disasters such as Cyclone Idai, there were no plans to cater for GBV survivors. She said more women failed to access GBV services while others needed direct support from the government. As at November 21 2020, Musasa Project recorded 37 152 cases of GBV, but many cases go unreported. lFollow Vanessa on Twitter @vanessa_gonye

George Floyd is sadly one of many, many African Americans who have been the victim of racial profiling and brutality.

Two men participating in that march — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and UAW President Walter Reuther — were dedicated to breaking the color lines and fighting for equality in wages, opportunities, housing, healthcare and fair societal treatment.

Because of socioeconomic and environmental factors — many due to continued disparity in opportunities — when COVID-19 struck this country it hit people of color especially hard.

The task force will act in an advisory capacity to the Governor and study the causes of racial disparities in the impact of COVID-19 and recommend actions to immediately address such disparities and the historical and systemic inequities that underlie them.

When we look at the many tragic incidents over the past decades, most recently Mr. Floyd’s horrific death, I can only think that we as a nation failed this young man, as we have failed so many others.

BY TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA FORMER Warriors striker Nyasha Mushekwi is among several football players plying their trade in China facing pay cuts following the approval of a salary cap for all players by the country’s football association. According to a report by the Daily Mail yesterday, the Chinese Super League could be set for an exodus of its biggest names. Several big names from across the world including former Chelsea star, Oscar have in recent years been heading to China for greener pastures. The report further said that salaries for domestic players would be capped at £572 000 a year, while foreign players would earn a maximum of £2,7 million a year. With spending limits having also been imposed for the second and third tier leagues it also affects Mushekwi who is now playing for China League One side Zhejiang Greentown. While the new regulation is a huge blow especially for the likes of Oscar, who is currently reported to be earning £18,87m a year at Shanghai SIPG, it will have profound effects on players like Mushekwi who has also played for the top division in that country turning out Dalian Yifang. The former Caps United striker, who has also played in South Africa and Sweden, is reported to be one of the best paid players in the second tier. The towering striker recently bought a state-of-the-art 45-seater luxury coach believed to be worth US$120 000 for his former team Caps United. The new regulation will certainly hit his pocket, but he will remain one of the best paid Zimbabweans. According to the South China Morning Post, there is an option for players on a salary like Oscar's to have it reduced over three years, rather than taking the hit all at once. Democratic Republic of Congo international Cedric Bakambu formerly of Villarreal who is reported to be on £341 000 a week, will also be affected, Hulk (£293 000 a week) and former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle (£263 000 a week) are other top names facing a similar pay cut. It is understood according to the report that a large number of foreign players are expected to head out of China to continue their careers elsewhere. So serious is the country’s football federation that it has announced plans to dock six to 24 points for any team exceeding limits and bar them from participating in matches organised by the CFA. “No matter how big the club is or how famous the player is, we will strictly follow the regulations with no considerations,” CFA president Chen Xuyuan said. “Do not test our determination. “CSL club expenditure is about 10 times higher than South Korea’s K-League and three times higher than Japan’s J-league. But our national team is lagging far behind,” He said. “The bubbles not only affect the present of Chinese football, but also hurt its future.” Follow Tawanda on Twitter @Tafitawa

But our national team is lagging far behind,” He said. “The bubbles not only affect the present of Chinese football, but also hurt its future.” Follow Tawanda on Twitter @Tafitawa","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.net/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2021/01/01f74751-8ce8-4d98-a7d2-044ec676b659.jpg","ImageHeight":400,"ImageWidth":600,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"7B933AE8-03CD-4CB2-9499-82145E19CFCF","SourceName":"NewsDay Zimbabwe - Everyday News for Everyday People","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.newsday.co.zw","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":"DB639B42-2581-4FB8-AA10-144471738A50","IsSponsored":true,"SponsorName":"Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA) Boston Professional Chapter","SmallSponsorLogoUrl":"24x24/alpfa-logo.png","SponsorUrl":"https://www.alpfa.org/page/boston","HasSmallSponsorLogo":true,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":null,"IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-12-15T22:00:34Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":238269,"FactUId":"948225C5-B2DC-49C5-8373-84E6F4319C0D","Slug":"mushekwi-faces-salary-cut","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Mushekwi faces salary cut","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/mushekwi-faces-salary-cut","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":false,"SponsorRedirectUrl":null,"SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/f1f9d883-f2c7-4733-93e8-e1ff9049ee1f/8b510179-644f-4a69-9876-548ea975a16c/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nycaribnews.com","DisplayText":"

Founded in 1963, the aim of the Organization of Africa Unity, the precursor of Africa Union (AU) was to safeguard the interests and independence of all African states, encourage the continent's development, and settle disputes among member states.

I agree with the President of Namibia, Dr. Hage Geingob, that African Union (AU) had achieved \"what some thought would be impossible - a free, democratic, self-governing and most importantly an Africa without incessant civil wars\" .

Indeed Africa has come of age as articulated by Nigeria's General Murtala Ramat Muhammed in his \"Africa Has Come of Age\" speech at the OAU Summit Summit on Angola which categorically mobilised African Heads of State for the recognition of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) as the authentic government of the Angolan people contrary to the preference of United States of America and the West in general.

The chair of the Africa Union, South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa hit the nail on the head when in his anniversary speech he observed that \"As Africans we will continue to stand on the side of justice and support the people of the Western Sahara in their enduring struggle for freedom and self-determination\".

It's time for genuine collaboration and unity of purpose between African states in combating the impact of the pandemic within the new normal and within the context of the African Union's Agenda 2063.

HEALTH Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said now is the time for workers in the retail sector to step forward, roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated.

Deyalsingh made this statement on Tuesday after touring the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) in San Fernando, where food and beverage workers were being vaccinated.

Having reopened the manufacturing, construction and food sectors already, Deyalsingh said, \"We would like to open the retail sector.\"

He said various business organisations are compiling lists of retail workers in their various jurisdictions and sending them to the ministry, so they can get appointments to be vaccinated at one of the 11 mass vaccination sites or one of the two drive-through sites.

He explained, \"Members of the public should not be coming to the mass vaccination sites. These sites are being used to vaccinate major groups like food and beverage, construction and so on.\" People who are not members of any of these groups should make appointments at any of the 109 health centres in the country.

He said small, medium and large health centres can vaccinate 50, 75 and 100 people daily. \"Across the health sector they can comfortably do 7,000 a day, which is three mass vaccination sites.\"

Deyalsingh said about 1,500 people a day could be vaccinated at a mass vaccination site like SAPA.

He hoped similar numbers would be done at drive-through sites at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva and in Wallerfield, which will both be fully operational on Wednesday. At the former, which is being run by Proman, Deyalsingh said a pilot run on Monday saw 500 people vaccinated in four hours.

He also said the objective of the accelerated mass covid19 vaccination was to vaccinate 600,000 people by the end of September and inch ever closer to achieve herd immunity in Trinidad and Tobago, with 980,000 people fully vaccinated against covid19.

\"What we are doing now is ramping up significantly our vaccination programme. We now have in the country enough vaccines to vaccinate 400,000 people. That is 40 per cent of the adult population.\"

Deyalsingh was optimistic that about 200,000 people will be vaccinated by next weekend.

With herd immunity being roughly 70 per cent of the population, Deyalsingh reminded reporters that TT's 1.4 million population includes children.

\"Right now, we don't have vaccines registered in TT for the under-18s, so that knocks off 400,000 people.\"

Excluding this number, Deyalsingh said, \"So it means to achieve herd immunity, 980,000 people, which is close to 100 per cent of your adult population.\"

He said this is why \"we are making vaccines available to every adult and there will be more coming.\"

Any Pfizer vaccines that Government obtains from the United States will be dedicated only to children between 12 and 18, that is, secondary school students.

Against this background, Deyalsingh said adults should take the covid19 vaccines available to them now and not wait for the Pfizer vaccine.

\"My urge is not to do so. You may put yourself in danger.\"
