In May, Burundi held a presidential election which was won by Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy - Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party.
Ndayishimiye was hurriedly sworn in after the untimely death of president Pierre Nkurunziza in June.
Rights violations continue
The Council encouraged donor countries which had suspended aid to Burundi to continue dialogue towards resumption of development assistance.
A report by a UN watchdog in September said human rights violations were still being committed in Burundi, including sexual violence and murder.
The country was plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Ndayishimiye’s predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a controversial third term, which he ultimately won in July 2015.
His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.
Hundreds of people were killed and over 300,000 fled to neighboring countries.

By Associated Press Undefined High tides flooded St. Mark's Square in Venice on Tuesday, propelled by winds that were stronger than predicted, and an experimental system of inflatable barriers wasn't activated to prevent water from invading the lagoon city. The system, while still in an experimental phase, gets activated when high tides are predicted to reach at least 1.3 meters (4 feet, 4 inches). Tuesday's tide was predicted to reach 1.25 meters. Instead, it kept rising, to a height of 1.38 meters, in late afternoon. Some shops were flooded, and Venetians waded in water as they scrambled to set out […]

By SCOTT SMITH Associated Press CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's political alliance claimed a sweeping victory Monday in congressional elections boycotted by the most influential opposition politicians and widely criticized internationally as being fraudulent. The win gives Maduro control of the last major branch of government outside his grasp. It plays out in the waning days of the Trump administration, which leaves office with Maduro firmly entrenched despite its efforts to bring about his departure through diplomacy and sanctions. 'We have recovered the National Assembly with the majority vote of the Venezuelan people,' Maduro said in a […]

Somalia's immigration department has issued a directive stopping the issuance of visas to Kenyans on arrival in a bid to 'ensure security and improve immigration management,' state radio has reported. Radio Mogadishu published a letter from the immigration authorities, which asked all Kenyan passport holders travelling to Somalia to obtain visas from Somali embassies. It also advised diplomatic passport holders to seek approval from the Somali foreign affairs ministry. The directive takes effect on 13 December. Mogadishu said the decision was in line with its 'policy of ensuring security and improving immigration management to reduce the risks of Covid-19 infections'. The move came a week after Somalia expelled Kenya's ambassador to Mogadishu and recalled its envoy from Nairobi. It said the Kenyan government is interfering in the electoral process in the semi-autonomous Jubbaland state. Relations between the two east African neighbours have been strained in recent years, mainly due to a maritime rights dispute.- BBC
