The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has thrown its full weight behind the Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) Executive Committee, pleading with the association’s affiliates to give it a fresh mandate in August this year.
MNCS Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata has made it clear that he is rallying behind the incumbent Nam to avoid giving room to what he called flimsy excuses.
Kamata made the remarks in Blantyre on Wednesday during the unveiling of the K1.2 billion FDH Bank Plc Premier National League.
The council CEO described the Vitumbiko Mwandemange - Gubuduza-led Nam administration as vibrant and visionary.
“We, as council, are happy to see both the private sector and government trusting Nam again. The association’s leadership has restored the corporate image which was lost, hence attracting massive partnerships,” he said.
Kamata advised affiliates to tread carefully as some officials had shown interest in vying for positions after the current committee secured massive support.
“We are fully aware of the people who would want to come in because there is money from Nico Group, FDH Bank and Mukuru at Nam but we will not allow lazy people to come and administer netball.
“I would be happy to see affiliates giving a fresh mandate to the current Nam executive,” Kamata said.
Nam General Secretary Yamikani Khungwa-Kauma could not be reached for their comments on the matter.
Meanwhile, Nkhotakota Netball District Committee Chairperson Isaac Odala Kakusa has concurred with Kamata, saying there was a need for continuation of projects.
Kakusa said the current Nam executive committee deserved a fresh mandate based on its performance.
“I am of the view that giving the current Nam Executive Committee a fresh mandate will be the best decision that will benefit the netball fraternity in the country.
“Already, there is a very big gap between this committee and the previous one. They deserve another go,” he said
Mzuzu City Netball Committee official Patrick Kusimbwa shared the sentiments.
“This committee has shown that they are not only capable of delivering but visionary and committed too.
“Here, up North, they have brought us the Vitumbiko Mumba Netball League and so many sponsorships. They also held the just-ended talent identification exercise, which will help beef up our national team in the next few years, here. My take is that they must continue,” Kusimbwa said.
The current executive committee also brought highly qualified local coaches Peace Chawinga- Kaluwa and Mary Waya to champion Malawi National Netball Team’s revival.
The association has secured massive sponsorships from Nico Group, FDH Bank and Mukuru.
