Claiming that efforts to uphold the constitutionally protected rights of state residents are opposed to the university's interests is a weird flex. The subtext seems that the university's interests and values need to align with Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican majority in the statehouse.
The Innovative Democratic Alliance (IDA) is calling on the country’s leaders to ensure that the views of citizens are duly considered in drafting policies and laws meant to govern them.
The party was reacting to the death of Jamaat al Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr, who, on July 27, 1990, tried to overthrow the National Alliance for Reconstruction Government, led by ANR Robinson.
Bakr, 80, collapsed at his home on Long Circular Road, St James, on Thursday night and was taken to the St James Health Facility, where he was declared dead.
In a statement issued through the party’s PRO Kaye Trotman on Friday, the IDA extended condolences to Bakr’s family and the Jamaat al Muslimeen, but noted there may still be many unanswered questions surrounding the attempted coup, including his true motives.
The party said leaders must be mindful of history.
“When a people are discontented, and feel oppressed with no hope, they tend to move towards effecting change in ways that are counterproductive to their cause,” the party said.
“As such, leaders must always ensure that the people’s views are duly considered in the drafting of policies and laws meant to govern them.”
Saying the IDA will continue to champion participatory democracy as the way to enact meaningful and sustainable change, the party said it rejects any administration that would “perpetuate an environment of insensitivity that can lead a nation to a state of anarchy.
“Fortunately, we live in a democracy that affords us another choice in resolving issues of discontent; an alternative that we are on the eve of exercising in the upcoming Tobago House of Assembly election on December 6, 2021. Let us exercise this choice and use this mechanism afforded to us, with the understanding of the significant responsibility we as citizens have in bringing about the changes we seek.
“At this watershed moment, with the passing of Yasin Abu Bakr, we say farewell; closing an era where people believe bloody revolt is the only way to secure change and heralding this season in Tobago where we can realise change through democracy.”

Less than a week after she announced that a motion would be filed seeking to remove the President from office, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced that plans to file a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister were underway.
Last Friday Persad-Bissessar announced that a constitutional motion would be filed seeking the removal of Paula-Mae Weekes from office, alleging that she was politically influenced on the selection process of a Police Commissioner after a visit from a high-office holder and therefore unfit to continue as President.
The motion was defeated by the Parliament's Electoral College during an extraordinary sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate on Thursday by a vote of 24 members for, 47 members against with no abstentions.
During the sittings, the microphones of several Opposition MPs were muted as they repeatedly interrupted House Speaker Brigid Annisette-George as she attempted to proceed with a vote on the motion.
At a media conference at her Charles Street, Port of Spain, office on Thursday, Persad-Bissessar described the failure of the motion as an \"attack on democracy\" and warned that if left unchecked TT's institutions would be vulnerable to political interference.
She added that her party would continue to raise the issue even after its defeat in Parliament and said her party would commence with an \"October revolution.\"
Asked why she chose to file a motion against the President instead of a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister in which the matter could be debated, Persad-Bissessar said, \"It's coming.\"
\"The last time I brought a no-confidence (motion) against the Prime Minister in 2010 the government fell, so it's coming in due course.
\"This matter will be kept alive long after today until the truth is revealed, we will take it onto the people as an October revolution as happened in other countries when a constitution has failed.
\"The Prime Minister will find no rock large enough to hide under or no robe thick enough to protect him from the firestorm that will come his way as a wage for treading on our sacred Constitution.\"
Asked to refer to which part of the Constitution allowed for debates on Parliamentary motions, Persad-Bissessar said it would take more time than the media conference would allow.
\"I have to go into so much legalese which I will do on another day, so for the moment I would prefer to leave it at that.\"
Persad-Bissessar said the October revolution would include efforts from her party to challenge the government in or out of the Parliament on matters of transparency and governance.

Guinea's Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in a coup in the West African nation in September, has announced that he is placing nearly 1,000 soldiers into retirement.
OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is defending her call for an \"October Revolution,\" saying it is not about destabilising the nation.
“The revolution has begun. This is not a revolution of violence, of ill-will or any malice to destabilise our nation. So do not be fooled with the narrative they are coming with.
“The October Revolution will save TT from Keith Rowley and the PNM. It is a movement, local, national and international, to build a modern parliamentary democracy in TT, built upon the foundation of the Constitution and the law.
“Our revolution would be a peaceful one united in purpose aimed at politically demolishing those forces which prevent the citizens of our nation from enjoying the standard of living they deserve and preventing our citizens from accomplishing the goals they have and prevent them from progressing.”
Addressing supporters through the virtual United National Congress (UNC) platform on Monday night, Persad-Bissessar said, “This is something we must do as we battle this Rowley dictatorship. As we battled the Rowley regime’s attempts to stifle democracy.”
She reminded her audience that the UNC was named after a combination of Mahatma Gandhi's Indian National Congress and Nelson Mandela's African National Congress and said it would follow in their tradition of non-violence.
Both men, she said, “fought for the freedom of their people and inspired the world. We strive to follow in their footsteps and fight for the freedom and emancipation of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
“Both of those movements were revolutionary movements. The UNC is embarking on its own revolutionary movement, a non-violent revolutionary movement: The October Revolution.”
The October Revolution originally referred to the Russian Revolution of October 1917 which ended the rule of the Czars and gave birth to the Soviet Union.
Persad-Bissessar said like that revolution, “We are here to fight against the abusive power by would-be kings, queens, czars, and czarinas. We are fighting for a democratic republic, against the PNM and Rowley dictatorship.”
She said while it continues to engage in parliamentary action, the UNC will also carry out simultaneous action online, on the ground, the streets, with public education and participation, international outreach, and outreach to non-traditional voters.
“Also, with all other people who love freedom and democracy in TT and do not want to be ruled over by a Rowley dictatorship.”
Last weekend several UNC-controlled constituencies signalled the start of the October Revolution by engaging in demonstrations to highlight numerous ills relating to bad roads, lack of water, infrastructural and other problems.
“Our revolution will be of united strength to stand up to those in our nation who believe they have the divine rights of kings and queens.
“The corruption, neglect and mismanagement of the Rowley regime have spread like a virus to every public institution of our nation, plunging us into a national crisis.
“For too long they have burdened you with
