Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

Nine people, including one police officer, have died in the West African state of Guinea, the security ministry said Wednesday, following days of unrest after a tense weekend presidential election.

In a statement, the ministry pointed to shootings and stabbings in the capital Conakry and elsewhere in the country since Sunday's presidential vote.

\"This strategy of chaos (was) orchestrated to jeopardise the elections of October 18, \" the ministry said, adding that many people had been injured and property was damaged.

Clashes were ongoing in Conakry on Wednesday, where a security officer, Mamadou Keganan Doumbouya, told the press that at least three people had died.

And a local doctor, who declined to be named, said he had received two dead bodies, and nine injured people, at his clinic.

The violence follows the high-stakes election in which President Alpha Conde ran for a third term in a controversial bid that had already sparked mass protests.

With tensions already running high, Guinea's main opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo on Monday declared victory in the election -- before the announcement of the official results, which are expected this week.

Opposition supporters are deeply suspicious about the fairness of the poll, although the government insists that it was fair.

Much of the tension in Guinea centres on Conde's candidacy.

In March, the 82-year-old president pushed through a new constitution which he argued would modernise the country. It also allowed him to bypass a two-term limit for presidents, however.

Security forces repressed mass protests against the move from October last year, killing dozens of people.

On Wednesday, plumes of black smoke rose over an opposition stronghold in the capital Conakry, where protesters erected barricades and lit fires, an AFP journalist saw.

Youths in alleyways also hurled stones at police officers stationed along a main artery who fired back tear gas canisters.

The security ministry stated that \"a police officer was lynched to death\" in a Conakry suburb, without specifying when the attack occurred.

In a social media post earlier on Wednesday, Conde appealed for \"calm and serenity while awaiting the outcome of the electoral process\".

Ten candidates are in the race besides alongside frontrunners Conde and Diallo, old political rivals who traded barbs in a bitter campaign.

Despite fears of violence after the pre-vote clashes, polling day was mostly calm.

Then Diallo's self-proclaimed election victory ratcheted up tensions, and celebrations by his supporters descended into violent clashes with security forces on Monday.

The opposition politician said that security forces killed three youngsters that night, although AFP was unable to confirm the details.

Security forces also barricaded Diallo inside his house, the politician said on Tuesday.

Monitors from the African Union and the 15-nation West African bloc ECOWAS both said that Guinea's election was mostly fair, despite insistence from Diallo's camp tha

Violent Political Tactics?

The Ivorian ruling party is accusing the opposition of political foul play as more clashes took place Tuesday 15 days before the presidential election in regions that seem to reveal a strategic pattern, More seemingly political-sourced clashes took place Tuesday between unknown persons and students of the powerful Fesci union — as some Ivorian authorities point out that the conflicts appear to follow a pattern.

Sidi Tiémoko Touré, Ivorian Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, gave a pubic address, \"You have certainly noted that violence is localized in certain localities, most of them close to certain opinion leaders, Daoukro, Bonoua in the case of Mrs Simone Gbagbo. Violence, it must be noted, orchestrated and manipulated by these different political leaders of the opposition.\"

The Elections Must Go On

The minister added that all arrangements will be made to ensure the security of the voting exercise at the appropriate time, \"We have an appropriate mechanism to address these different types of community violence and those at the grassroots level will face justice as the perpetrators.\" About 20 people have died since August in violence related to the presidential election which will hold on October 31 amid mounting political tensions.

BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA A MUTOKO man (23), who allegedly murdered his aunt accusing her of misplacing his lucky charm, and in the process also seriously injured his 80-year-old grandmother, was on Friday denied bail by Mutoko magistrate Elijah Sibanda. Piniel Tinomuda of Village 43 Hoyuyu allegedly axed to death Lizzie Madende (59) over the lucky charm that went missing. He will be back in court on October 30. His grandmother, Benhilda Nyarambi, is reportedly unconscious at Mutoko General Hospital. Court papers state that on October 13 at around 8pm, Madende was at her residence with other family members, including the suspect. Tinomuda reportedly accused Madende of misplacing his talisman which he kept in his bedroom. The accused became violent, took an axe from his bedroom and struck Madende twice. Madende died on the spot. Nyarambi reportedly pleaded with the suspect to stop axing his aunt and he turned on her and he struck twice on the neck and arm. Nyarambi fell and became unconscious. The accused also attacked Madende’s two children who fled from the scene. After realising that he had committed a serious crime, the accused fled and hid in a nearby mountain. A report was made at Janhi Police Base, resulting in a manhunt being launched. The suspect was arrested from his hiding place. Nyarambi, who is admitted at Mutoko District Hospital, is in a critical condition. Nathan Majuru represented the State

Women Stand Up, Pandemic Stand Down!

Kampala, Uganda is serving a healthy dose of Girl Power amid a covid-19 pandemic that sees several women — who found themselves in months-long lockdown and unemployed, take on both new careers and self-defence training by way of Diva Taxi, a new female taxi driver service in the city. Company founder, Gillian Kobusingye, is proud of her employees, \"Our ladies are extremely hard working, very motivated and I like their sense of pride when they are doing this work they are doing it with one heart compared to other people. And that's the difference we have to the competitors.\"

Diva Taxi now boasts over 70 drivers and claims an industry-low fare commission rate of 25% in order to see the women thrive.

Donna Ochen, a Diva Taxi driver, is happy with the means the professional opportunity financially affords her,  \"When I saw the Diva Taxi company reaching out to all females who could be interested I decided to take it up because it would be an opportunity for me to serve and earn and support my family with the earnings that I'd get from driving.\"

Filling a Much-Needed Void in the Industry

Diva Taxi has a fleet of around 100 cars that serve as taxis, special school pick-ups and drop-offs and even functions like weddings. An unexpected and resounding successful start for the company that almost wasn't. Rebecca Makyeli, the manager and self-defence trainer at Diva Taxi, shares the very early days of the company's journey,  \"They thought of the idea of why would we have our cars just parked in a compound and yet we can transport people and services from one place to another. So, coming up with this idea it started off as a joke, supported by friends, close friends and family, but eventually, the idea picked up and in June 2020 the company was registered and officially came into being.\"

With its 72 drivers averaging 30 rides a week, Diva Taxi expects its service app — downloaded around 500 times to reach 2000 active users this year in the city of three million inhabitants.
