Police responded with teargas and bullets. The clashes erupted as soon as provisional results released by the electoral commission showed president Alpha Conde winning with a big margin.  \n\nConde, 82, won twice as many votes as his nearest rival, opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo, with 37 of 38 districts counted, according to preliminary results from the commission. \n\n\nOpposition supporters accuse the electoral authorities of rigging the vote for incumbent president Alpha Conde. \n\nSekou Koundouno, head of mobilisation for the opposition coalition FNDC said Conde had committed 'high treason'.  \n\n\"He is an illegal and illegitimate candidate who is stubbornly pursuing his obsession to turn Guin ea into a monarchy in which, by the way, he will dictate orders to his subjects,\" said Kounduno.  \n\nDiallo maintains that he won with a landslide despite irregularities, according to his own tally. He remains barricaded in his home which security forces have besieged since Monday. \n\nICC warning  \n\nThe International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor warned on Friday that warring factions in Guinea could be prosecuted after fighting erupted. \n\n\n“I wish to repeat this important reminder: anyone who commits, orders, incites, encourages and contributes in any other way to crimes … is liable to prosecution either by the Guinean courts or the ICC,” she said. \n\n\n#ICC Prosecutor #FatouBensouda: "I wish to repeat this important reminder: anyone who commits, orders, incites, encourages or contributes, in any other way, to the commission of #RomeStatute crimes, is liable to prosecution either by #Guinean courts or by the #ICC."\r\n— Int'l Criminal Court (@IntlCrimCourt) October 23, 2020 \n\n\nMany people have been killed since clashes began on Monday. A 37-YEAR-OLD 1 Commando Regiment-based soldier was on Thursday night killed by three minors after he allegedly attacked their mother over suspected arson at his parents’ home in Zaka, Masvingo province. BY DESMOND CHINGARANDE National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the murder of Aaron Bhasopayi by three children aged 15, 12 and 10 under circumstances still under investigation. “We are investigating what really transpired,” Nyathi said. But a leaked police memo indicated that the soldier travelled from Harare to Zaka on Wednesday on a revenge mission after his parents’ hut was allegedly set on fire by the minor children’s father over a debt. Bhasopayi arrived at the accused person’s home at around 10pm, forced himself into the accused’s room and woke them up before going to their mother’s bedroom, where he stabbed her with a knife, accusing her husband of torching his parents’ hut. The trio’s mother cried for help and on realising their mother was in danger, the 15-year-old accused person grabbed Bhasopayi from the back and the other two accused persons started to assault the soldier using logs. It is alleged the accused persons took an axe which was in the room and struck Bhasopayi several times on the head until he collapsed. The accused persons left him unconscious and alerted neighbours and police. The police officers attended the scene and found Bhasopayi’s body lying in a pool of blood. The police searched the body and recovered a Zimbabwe National Army identity card, three blue tablets, cigarettes and loose dagga. The body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital for post-mortem while the accused’s mother was referred to Ndanga District Hospital for medical attention. The matter is being investigated under ZRP Zaka CR117/10/20. lFollow Desmond on Twitter @DChingarande1

A Bill that will guide the sale of Kenya Airways (KQ) to the State was tabled in Parliament on Thursday, setting the stage for the buyout of minority shareholders at a premium and converting shares held by banks into Treasury bonds.

The loss-making airline, which is 48.9 per cent government-owned and 7.8 per cent held by Air France-KLM, was privatised 24 years ago but sank into debt and losses in 2014.

Kenya has reached an agreement with Air France-KLM on the offer price, which will be a premium on the carrier’s prevailing trading price at the Nairobi bourse.

A consortium of local lenders, who acquired 38 per cent of the company’s equity during the 2017 restructuring, could be paid through government debt, possibly in 10-year Treasury bonds, Mr Yatani said.

Mr Yatani said the State was keen on a long-term solution anchored on nationalisation of Kenya Airways, arguing that the carrier’s financial troubles went beyond the Covid-related woes.

Jay Pharoah found fame as a former cast member of SNL and has parlayed that notoriety into a booming acting career, but even that didn’t shield him from the cruel reality of racism in America.

In a new short film, the actor and comedian detailed how he came close to losing his life at the hands of the police simply for being a Black man.

While going about his workout routine in Los Angeles and getting in some exercise, Pharoah shares security video footage of Los Angeles officers surrounding him with their guns drawn.

At one especially uncomfortable portion of the video, one officer can be seen placing his knee into the back of Pharoah’s neck as he was cuffed by the officers.

Aspen Pharmacare is working to ensure it can manage demand for a generic anti-inflammatory drug that was shown to improve survival in Covid-19 patients.

Africa’s biggest drug maker has set up a team to assess how much of the 60-year-old drug dexamethasone it can supply and by when, CEO Stephen Saad said on Wednesday.

‘Moving target’

Aspen needs to be able to assess the genuine demand so it can decide whether to dedicate a greater proportion of manufacturing to this drug versus others, Saad said.

Aspen is one of several companies to make the generic drug, which UK officials said will cost less than US$6 for a course of treatment.

The Oxford researchers said the drug may help coronavirus patients cope with a powerful overreaction of the immune system.

Tesla’s stock jumped above US$1 000/share on Wednesday after CEO Elon Musk told his staff it was time to bring the Tesla Semi commercial truck to “volume production”.

Musk on Wednesday tweeted “Yes” to a question on Twitter about whether the report of the leaked Semi truck production email was accurate.

Investors are anticipating Musk will unveil new ‘million-mile’ battery technology that could deliver longer life, lower costs and better range

The stock also got a boost from a bullish call by Wedbush, which lifted its target price for the automaker to $1 000 and said Tesla could have “more room to run”.

Nikola, Tesla

When Musk unveiled the prototype of the futuristic, battery-powered Semi in 2017, he said the Class 8 truck would go into production by 2019.

Elon Musk

Shares in Nikola have more than doubled in price over the past week as the company’s CEO has used Twitter and interviews to promote plans to launch an electric pickup truck to Tesla’s forthcoming Cybertruck.

The Wendy Co (NASDAQ: WEN) restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, which became the site of the killing of Rayshard Brooks on Friday, was set on fire Saturday.

On Friday, the Wendy’s restaurant became the site of a struggle between Brooks, 27, and two police officers who were sent to the restaurant after a call, complaining about a vehicle blocking the drive-thru.

When the police tried to arrest him, Brooks grabbed a taser from one of the officers and ran.

The death of Brooks, Afro American man, at the hands of a white police officer, comes as Atlanta saw the third consecutive weekend of protest over George Floyd, an African American man killed by a white policeman on Memorial day.

Georgia NAACP, a civil rights organization, demanded the termination of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields, who resigned on Saturday but will continue to remain employed by the city in an undetermined role.
