5th Graders Inspirational speech pays Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr

Politics Facts

In May, Burundi held a presidential election which was won by Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy - Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party.

Ndayishimiye was hurriedly sworn in after the untimely death of president Pierre Nkurunziza in June.

Rights violations continue

The Council encouraged donor countries which had suspended aid to Burundi to continue dialogue towards resumption of development assistance.

A report by a UN watchdog in September said human rights violations were still being committed in Burundi, including sexual violence and murder.

The country was plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Ndayishimiye’s predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a controversial third term, which he ultimately won in July 2015.

His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.

Hundreds of people were killed and over 300,000 fled to neighboring countries.

PRIME Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has criticised the annual UN climate change conference (COP), labelling it \"largely a talk shop,\" after the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl.

He spoke in an interview published in the Guardian UK on July 1.

The “extremely dangerous” category 4 storm made landfall in the Windward Islands on July 1, wreaking havoc.

Gonsalves expressed frustration over what he saw as the lack of meaningful action by major greenhouse-gas-emitting countries.

\"You hear a lot of talk, but you don't see much action – like making funds available to small-island developing states and other vulnerable countries.\"

He said the early-season hurricane should raise awareness of the region's vulnerabilities and prompt action on commitments from the Paris accord and other agreements.

Gonsalves pointed to the July 4 UK election campaign as an example of weak political will on climate action.

\"Climate change is not a major part of the campaigns.

\"While some Labour and Green party members mention it, it is not central to the major parties' messages because it is not seen as an election winner.

\"The same situation is occurring in Western Europe and the United States as countries shift to the right. It's a terrible time for small-island developing states and vulnerable countries.\"

SVG, still recovering from a major volcanic eruption in 2021, and neighbouring Grenada have been affected by Hurricane Beryl. After it hit Carriacou, Grenada, officials reported significant devastation.

From his residence in St Vincent on July 1, Gonsalves described the catastrophic impact of the storm, which ripped off roofs, including that of the 204-year-old St George’s Anglican Cathedral in Kingstown, the capital.

\"We have no electricity and as I speak, the rain is pounding on the official prime minister’s residence and the winds are howling.

\"It's going to get much worse.

\"The coming hours are going to be horrendous.\"

The hurricane's torrential rain and gale-force winds downed power lines, damaged vehicles and forced thousands into shelters.

Videos posted on social media showed aluminium roofing sheets flying through the air.

Gonsalves said on Union Island, 90 per cent of homes lost their roofs or were severely damaged.

The US Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned Beryl posed a \"life-threatening\" danger.

The hurricane rapidly intensified from a tropical depression to a major hurricane in just 42 hours, a rare event in Atlantic hurricane history.

By the morning of June 30, countries across the eastern Caribbean, including SVG, Barbados, Grenada and St Lucia, were on hurricane watch. By the end of the day, some islands had declared a state of emergency, imposing curfews and movement restrictions.

The hurricane also disrupted flights and postponed major events, including the St Vincent Carnival and the Caricom leaders’ summit scheduled for this week in Grenada.

Despite instability, political progress continued. In May 2005, a new constitution was adopted by the national assembly, and overwhelmingly ratified in Jan. 2006. On July 30, 2006, the first democratic election in the country since 1970 took place. President Kabila received 44.8% of the vote, which was not enough to win the election outright. Fighting broke out between factions supporting the two major candidates, setting off the worst violence the country has seen since the 2002 peace deal was signed. Kabila was declared the winner in the October run-off election, winning 58% of the vote, the countrys first freely elected president in four decades.

In August 2007, a rebel general, Laurent Nkunda, led battles between his militia, made up of fellow Tutsis, and the Congolese Army. The fighting continued throughout the year, driving hundreds of thousands of people from their homes in eastern Congo and threatening to spiral the already fragile country back into civil war. Nkunda claimed he was protecting Tutsis from extremist Rwandan Hutus. In January 2008, the government and the rebels signed an agreement that had both sides withdrawing their troops and the rebels disarming and eventually being integrated into the national army. The cease-fire fell apart in August, and fighting resumed between Nkundas militia and the army. By the end of October 2008, the rebels had captured the major army base of Rumangaboebel and were advancing towad Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. In addition, angry civilians attacked UN peacekeeping troops, who proved ineffectual in both thwarting the rebels and protecting citizens. Nkunda was arrested in January 2009, and a cease-fire was signed on March 23, 2009. Members of Nkundas militia joined the government forces. The militaries of Congo and Rwanda worked together to eliminate remaining rebel fighters from eastern Congo. The joint mission lasts about five weeks.

BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA PRESIDENTIAL spokesperson George Charamba has dismissed claims that the imprisonment of MDC Alliance executive member Makomborero Haruziviishe was political persecution and lauded the courts for discouraging “hooliganism” and public disorder in the country. Haruziviishe (29), an MDC Alliance executive member, was on Tuesday jailed for 14 months for inciting public violence, a sentence which is being challenged by civil society groups and human rights lawyers. In a series of tweets on his @Jamwanda2 Twitter handle yesterday, Charamba mocked MDC- Alliance for failing to save the activist from being sent to jail. He later told NewsDay that he was using the social media platform to “influence moral behaviour”. “I am not mocking anyone. I am mocking hooliganism which is taking the human form of Makomborero Haruziviishe,” Charamba said. “You don’t expect us to shower confetti on lawlessness.  Haruziviishe is a young college dropout who confuses politics with violence. By imprisoning him, we try to use him as an example to discourage such behaviour. What I am doing in my tweets is moral sanctioning. There are certain behaviours which cannot just be condoned in society.” He said Haruziviishe’s conviction had nothing to do with politics because he was tried and convicted in a court of law “independent” from political parties’ interference. “Was he tried at the Zanu PF headquarters or MDC party offices that it can be referred to as a political matter?” Charamba asked rhetorically. But MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said by imprisoning and arresting human rights activists, government was demonstrating beyond doubt there was no new dispensation to speak of. “It is clear that politicians are abusing the courts and weaponising the law to silence dissent and punish members of the opposition. This is the latest symptom of the ever-growing bad governance crisis this nation faces. This is not about Mako, buy what he represents, the quest by the people for freedom from tyrannical rule.” She added: “It’s a huge matter of regret that civil servants such as Charamba are mocking human rights defenders. “He clearly lacks the courage to associate his true identity with the abhorrent content of his tweets. How can he then be expected to understand or respect the type of courage it takes to fight brutal regimes such as the one he represents?” Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum executive director Musa Kika said Charamba’s tweets were acts of “oppressors rejoicing at the efficacy of their system to silence critics”. “Unfortunately, it appears Charamba and others are oblivious to the fact that due to the temporary nature of power, the architects of manipulation of the criminal justice system may find themselves victims to that system,” said Kika. “There is precedent for that.” Human Rights Watch Southern Africa director Dewa Mavhinga said Haruziviishe’s imprisonment was a political matter, hence a senior government official like Charamba should stop dabbling in partisan politics. The Congo, in west-central Africa, is bordered by the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, the Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is one-quarter the size of the U.S. The principal rivers are the Ubangi and Bomu in the north and the Congo in the west, which flows into the Atlantic. The entire length of Lake Tanganyika lies along the eastern border with Tanzania and Burundi.

Transitional government.

Formerly the Belgian Congo, this territory was inhabited by ancient Negrito peoples (Pygmies), who were pushed into the mountains by Bantu and Nilotic invaders. The American correspondent Henry M. Stanley navigated the Congo River in 1877 and opened the interior to exploration. Commissioned by King Leopold II of the Belgians, Stanley made treaties with native chiefs that enabled the king to obtain personal title to the territory at the Berlin Conference of 1885.

Leopold accumulated a vast personal fortune from ivory and rubber through Congolese slave labor; 10 million people are estimated to have died from forced labor, starvation, and outright extermination during Leopolds colonial rule. His brutal exploitation of the Congo eventually became an international cause célèbre, prompting Belgium to take over administration of the Congo, which remained a colony until agitation for independence forced Brussels to grant freedom on June 30, 1960. In elections that month, two prominent nationalists won: Patrice Lumumba of the leftist Mouvement National Congolais became prime minister and Joseph Kasavubu of the ABAKO Party became head of state.

But within weeks of independence, the Katanga Province, led by Moise Tshombe, seceded from the new republic, and another mining province, South Kasai, followed. Belgium sent paratroopers to quell the civil war, and the United Nations flew in a peacekeeping force.

Kasavubu staged an army coup in 1960 and handed Lumumba over to the Katangan forces. A UN investigating commission found that Lumumba had been killed by a Belgian
