Virginia, long seen as a critical state in American politics, has also been a barometer of the nation’s racial climate and is being closely watched to see what direction it takes in the way of social justice.
If she becomes governor, McClelland would be the second Black governor of VIrginia, following Doug Wilder, and the first Black woman ever voted into the job making history in the state as well as in the nation.
She spoke with BET.com about her plans to address social justice and equality, and also focus on answering the racial issues that have come out of the state over the past few years like the deadly protest incident in Charlottesville in 2017 and Black Virginia voters’ influence on electoral politics.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen has suspended personal use of the controversial insignia of the Order of St Michael and St George.
The insignia depicts a white man, cited as a triumphant archangel, with his foot on the neck of a black man deemed to be ‘Satan’.
Sir Patrick also says he has asked his office to review all insignias and iconography associated with the Office of The Governor General that may be considered racialised or culturally inappropriate.
In the meantime, the governor general has sent a letter to the Chancellor of the Order of St Michael and St George requesting a revision of the image used on the medal.
He has recommended that it be changed to reflect an inclusive image of the shared humanity of all peoples.

She recently announced her department will be sending out unsolicited absentee ballot applications to 7.7 million registered voters in Michigan.
In the past, opponents have been successful before Michigan courts stopping mass mailings of absentee ballot applications.
In Fleming, the court ruled unconstitutional the Macomb County Clerk’s mass mailing of absentee ballot applications.
The case relied on the following facts: the applications discriminated in favor of a narrow portion of voters, they were limited to persons over 60-years of age; the applications were sent out by a county clerk; and it violated Art. 2, Section 4 of the Michigan Constitution.
This time around a different legal outcome is more likely; because the mass mailing of absentee ballot applications is being done by a current Secretary of State, Michigan’s principal elections official, not a local county clerk.

The Civil Rights Movement in the United States was a long, primarily nonviolent series of events to bring full civil rights and equality under the law to all Americans. The movement has had a lasting impact on United States society, in its tactics, the increased social and legal acceptance of civil rights, and in its exposure of the prevalence and cost of racism.
The Civil Rights Movement refers to the political actions and reform movements between 1954 and 1968 to end legal racial segregation in the United States, especially in the US South.
This article focuses on an earlier phase of the movement. Two United States Supreme Court decisions—Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896), which upheld separate but equal racial segregation as constitutional doctrine, and Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (1954) which overturned Plessy—serve as milestones. This was an era of new beginnings, in which some movements, such as Marcus Garveys Universal Negro Improvement Association, were very successful but left little lasting legacy, while others, such as the NAACPs painstaking legal assault on state-sponsored segregation, achieved modest results in its early years but made steady progress on voter rights and gradually built to a key victory in Brown v. Board of Education (1954).
After the Civil War, the US expanded the legal rights of African Americans. Congress passed, and enough states ratified, an amendment ending slavery in 1865—the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This amendment only outlawed slavery; it provided neither citizenship nor equal rights. In 1868, the 14th Amendment was ratified by the states, granting African Americans citizenship. All persons born in the US were extended equal protection under the laws of the Constitution. Department of Veterinary Services chief director, Dr Josphat Nyika, said on Wednesday that Matabeleland South had seven districts badly affected by poverty deaths, with the province losing over 30 000 cattle.
Dr Nyika urged farmers to de-stock by selling old and non-productive cattle.
Dr Nyika said not all farmers should de-stock as they could buy survival feed, which was specifically prepared for drought conditions.

Xiomara Peña is the program director for Small Business Majority, a nonprofit that provides business owners with access to translated documentation, as well as connecting entrepreneurs to reliable local lenders.
Tilly added that many banks are hesitant to approve loans for minority business owners, as such business owners often lack a previous business relationship with the lending institution.
As a result, Peña said those institutions have become critically important in supporting non-native English speaking business owners seeking federal loans.
