Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

A former Florida police officer has been charged with battery and misconduct after a video surfaced showing him putting his knee on a Black woman’s neck.

The former police officer, who also lied on the police report he filed, is 30-year-old Jordy Yanes Martel and he turned himself into the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Miami office late last week.

In the video clip, it shows Martel stunned the Black woman twice with a Taser, while another officer held Satchell’s arm as she struggled to free herself.

“By filing these criminal charges today against former Miami Gardens officer Jordy Yanes Martel, we are saying that these actions are just plain wrong.”

“I’m here to affirm the chief’s decision to terminate him, because the operative word is ‘former’ Miami Gardens police officer,” Mayor Oliver Gilbert said at a Thursday press conference reported NBC 6 South Florida.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Alarming surges in coronavirus cases across the U.S. South and West raised fears Monday that the outbreak is spiraling out of control and that hard-won progress against the scourge is slipping away because of resistance among many Americans to wearing masks and keeping their distance from others.

The number of new coronavirus cases across the country per day has reached more than 26,000, up from about 21,000 two weeks ago, according to an Associated Press analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Although he asked health officials to renew calls for people to wear masks and keep their distance, Gov. Ron DeSantis has not signaled he will retreat from reopening the state after three months of shutdowns that have damaged the economy.

Dr. Michael Ryan, the World Health Organization’s emergencies chief, said the outbreak is “definitely accelerating” in the U.S. and a number of other countries, dismissing the notion that the record-breaking daily levels of new cases simply reflect more testing.

And nearly 1 in 3 people tested overall have turned up positive, according to the WHO’s Ryan, who said the startlingly high number suggests cases are going either unreported or undetected because of a low rate of testing.

Division of Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz said last week his agency is redeveloping plans about evacuations and shelters, while also adding facemasks to the state’s stockpile of storm supplies.

The need to revise storm plans amid the pandemic comes as forecast models lean toward an active hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean.

Last year, the six-month hurricane season produced 18 named storms, of which six became hurricanes, three reaching major storm status.

Researchers from North Carolina State University have gone with 18 to 22 named storms, of which eight to 11 are expected to grow to hurricane status, with three to five reaching major hurricane strength.

Last week, AccuWeather meteorologists upped their initial forecast of a “normal” season of 14 to 18 storms, with seven to nine becoming hurricanes, to a more-robust prediction of 14 to 20 named storms, of which seven to 11 would reach hurricane strength.

The US State Department included the Cuban company Fincimex on its list of restricted entities on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the inclusion of seven Cuban companies and hotels in the list of restricted entities linked to the Cuban military.

It is not immediately clear how the Western Union agreement with Fincimex to send money to Cuba would be affected, since the Treasury Department will not publish the new regulations until June 12.

Other companies in Miami and other US cities that send remittances to Cuba could also be affected because they operate on the island through Fincimex, Morales said.

John Kavulich, president of the US-Cuba Trade and Economic Council surmises that “The Trump Administration expects that Western Union Company and Mastercard International will request Cuba either identify or create another entity or entities not affiliated with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba which would process the financial transactions.”
