Ghana coronavirus: 5,408 cases; 13 of 16 regions infected

April 14: 5,530 cases, 13 of 16 regions infected

Total confirmed cases = 5,530 (new cases = 122)

Total recoveries = 674 (new recoveries = 160)

Total deaths = 24 (new deaths = 0)

Active cases = 4,832

Thirteen of the 16 regions in the country have recorded cases of the disease. Bono East, Savanna and Ahafo Regions have not recorded any cases of COVID-19 so far, Dr. Badu-Sarkodie told the press at todays briefing.

Ministers present at the briefing included the Tourism minister who reiterated government position on bars and clubs. Very soon well overcome COVID-19 and return to normalcy so that we can go back to enjoying our various social activities, Barbara Oteng Gyasi said.

Health Minister Kweku Agyemang Manu: We need to all become health ambassadors by ensuring that those around us adhere to the precautions.

If you dont have anything important to do outside, stay at home. There are lots of things to keep you occupied at home. If you dont have to talk, dont. Especially if you are not wearing a face mask. If we dont work towards curbing the spread of COVID-19, the result could be catastrophic for us.

The bar question: to reopen or not to?

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture on Wednesday was forced to issue a statement on the status of drinking bars and nightclubs.

The statement signed by Minister Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, clarified that drinking bars and night clubs remain closed, whiles food chains and restaurants (including hotel restaurants) can operate takeout and delivery services only.

The clarification came after a statement from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) indicated that hotels, restaurants and bars could resume operations albeit with enhanced social distancing protocols.

All hotels can operate as normal and host their guests, subject to the specified elevated hygiene protocols and social distancing. Food chains and restaurants can operate sit-down, as well as, pickup and delivery services while observing appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols Drinking bars can operate while observing appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols, the overruled GTAs statement had said.

April 12: Cases hit 5,127; gold-rich Obuasi new hotspot

Ghanas case statistics passed the 5,000 mark after 427 new cases were recorded according to head of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Aboagye. The case count is now at 5,127.

Speaking on the Tema fish country incident, he said aggressive contact tracing and follow ups were ongoing in Tema.

Of the new cases, the Ashanti region recorded 307 new cases. Out of which 272 were from Obuasi, the gold-rich town. Obuasi is now the hottest spot where we have massive search and identification ongoing, he added.

Meanwhile General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson has cautioned against a possible surge in the number of virus-related deaths in the country.
