President of the People’s National Party (PNP), Dr Peter Phillips, has asserted that the leadership of the St James Municipal Corporation was seeking to undermine the minority caucus because of their efforts to expose corruption in local government.

Phillips, who was speaking at a PNP meeting held at The University of the West Indies on Sunday, said that there was a link between the happenings at the St Ann Municipal Corporation, which is now under investigation by the Integrity Commission, and the booting of two PNP councillors from the one in St James.

But Phillips felt that it was an abuse of power given the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is an abuse of power and dishonesty,” Phillips charged to cheers from close political organisers in the party.

It is a pattern which is also evidence from the reports received from the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), where the internal audit committee that was set up under the previous administration is being dismantled,” Phillips said.

\"The Sahrawi authorities have taken strict precautionary measures against Covid-19, through the establishment, from the outset, of a committee, chaired by the Sahrawi Prime Minister, Bouchraya Hamoudi Beyoun, and the interruption of all contact between the five refugee camps, except in cases of force majeure, in addition to the closure of the borders and public institutions that provided the minimum service for basic benefits,\" Yahia Bouhabini told APS, stressing that these measures \"had yielded positive results and no cases of COVID-19 infection were recorded\".

The same official said that confinement centers had been set up for people outside the refugee camps, adding that \"the tests of three suspected cases had been negative\".

The Sahrawi authorities opted for prevention in refugee camps, \"which contributed to the rapid adherence of refugees to the measures taken against COVID-19,\" Bouhabini said.

On the economic and humanitarian fronts, Bouhabini noted that the pandemic, which affected more than 160 countries around the world, had had a negative impact, further weakening the situation in the camps, in particular because of delays in the delivery of aid at the beginning of this global health crisis.

Historic Trial For War Crimes in Liberia

Accused of having committed barbaric acts between 1993 and 1995 during the civil war in Liberia, the doubly historic trial of the former Liberian rebel commander Alieu Kosiah began on Thursday in Switzerland where he had been in exile for twenty years.

Incarcerated since 14 November 2014, the 45-year-old Alieu Kosiah appeared before the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona accompanied by his court-appointed lawyer Dimitri Gianola.

Although the proceedings are not behind closed doors, the number of seats in the courtroom is extremely limited in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Questioned by the president of the court Jean-Luc Bacher, Kosiah — who is the first individual to be tried for war crimes by a civil court, stressed that he had been in prison \"for six years and a month\" and denied all the charges brought against him,

Justice for Liberia Overdue

Both former warlord and president Charles Taylor — who also played a significant role the aforementioned conflict, was convicted of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Liberia's neighbour Sierra Leone in 2012.

However, no Liberian is yet to be convicted in Liberia or abroad for crimes committed during the West African country's civil war — which saw 250,000 people lose their lives between 1989 and 2003.

Most of the commanders of the various armed groups fled the country after the war.

Kosiah, who had been living in Switzerland since 1999 according to HRW, was arrested following criminal complaints by victims.

Child Soldiers in Civil War

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the victims, who reside in Africa, will not be heard before 2021. This is deplored by the organisation Civitas Maxima, which represents some of them.

\"This is a case where Kosiah claims that they are all lying and that he did not commit any crime. We want this contradictory debate to take place,\" Romain Wavre, a lawyer at Civitas Maxima, told AFP.

The Swiss federal prosecutor's office accuses Alieu Kosiah of having committed, between 1993 and 1995, as a member of the armed faction ULIMO (United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy), a faction of armed groups hostile to the movement of Charles Taylor (the National Patriotic Front of Liberia, NPFL), several offences constituting \"war crimes\". Namely: recruitment and use of child soldiers, forced transportation, looting, cruel treatment of civilians, attempted murder, murder (directly or by order), desecration of a corpse and rape.

War Crime \"Impunity\"

In France, the anti-terrorist prosecutor's office recently requested a trial by jury against another former Liberian rebel commander, Kunti K., accused of acts of torture.

\"Alieu Kosiah and Kunti K. were two of the commanders of the same armed group - ULIMO - and were fighting at the same time in Lofa County in northern Liberia,\" said Wavre of Civitas Maxima.

More than fifteen years after the end of the conflict, many of the personalities directly involved in the civil war still hold important positions in the spheres of

A setback that did not prevent Pierre Lescure, the president of the festival, and Thierry Frémaux, the artistic director, from announcing the creation of the Cannes 2020 label to encourage the directors of 56 films.

In this official selection, only two films are directed by professionals from the African continent: the documentary En route Pour le Milliard du Congolais by Dieudo Hamadi and Souad, the feature film by Egyptian director Ayten Amin.

Included in this selection are two feature films by British director Steve McQueen, which shed light on issues faced by the black community in England.

Frémaux told the press: “He’s (Steve McQueen) coming with two films produced by the BBC “Lover’s Rock” and “Mangrove”, two historical films.

Films that as one of the members of the selection committee said we’re really going to increase the rate of diversity since it’s the black community in London in the 70’s…

\t“… and obviously “Mangrove” is a film of trials of police officers who harass the black community, obviously it resonates very dramatically with what happened to George Floyd and Adama Traoré.”

The rock musicians from Oklahoma City are literally blowing up in 2020, using inflatable human-sized bubbles to defend themselves and fans against Covid-19 while finding a way to play live.

Performing at The Criterion in their hometown on Monday evening, The Flaming Lips placed themselves -- and all attending fans -- inside individual plastic spheres. The concert -- which was part live show, part music video shoot -- was born out of a sketch doodled by Wayne Coyne during the pandemic's early days, the frontman told CNN.

\"I did a little drawing... where I drew a picture of The Flaming Lips doing a show in 2019. And I'm the only person in the space bubble, and everybody else is just normal,\" Coyne told CNN during a phone interview on Friday. \"Then (I did another drawing with) The Flaming Lips playing a show in 2020. The exact same scenario, but I'm in a bubble, and so is everybody else.\"

At the time, Coyne says, the idea was more or less a social commentary on the state of virus, with the thinking that Covid-19 would never linger long enough to see the bubble experiment fully inflate.

\"I don't think anybody would have thought ... in the middle of March that this is still going to be going, you know, eight months later. I think we all thought this is a month, this is maybe two months, but we're going to get a handle on this,\" he said.

Coyne and the band first unveiled the concept during a May visit to \"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.\"

That inspired them to keep going.

\"We do a couple of songs with about 30 people in the bubbles. And we start to think, 'Well, you know, just from doing that, we start to get an idea that we could actually do it, you know, and it could actually happen,'\" Coyne revealed.

The \"space bubbles\" have long been a part of The Flaming Lips stage shows, so Coyne and company were familiar with a series of inflatable orbs. After setting the specs, the band ordered 100 bubbles from China, and this unique music event - one first drawn up on Coyne's sketchpad -- was ready to pop.

\"Since May, the desire to see the live music has just gotten, you know, more, more amplified,\" he told CNN, noting that fans interested in test-driving the experience were asked to arrive at The Criterion between 6:30 and 7 p.m. ET.

\"Right at a little after six, we already had enough people.\"

With a couple hundred fans floating about, The Flaming Lips performed a dance remix of \"Assassins of Youth\" and \"Brother Eye,\" a pair of tracks from their latest LP, \"American Head.\"

Coyne captioned an Instagram post from the show with the word \"Yessss!!!\" -- a nod to the feat they had collectively pulled off.

\"I like the way this looks, because you can get as excited as you want, you can scream as much as you want, you just can't infect the person next to you, no matter what you forget about, how excited you get,\" he said. \"That barrier is still there, they're protected, and you're protected... that part of it is what we really felt like was the success,\" he said.

So are bouncing bubbles, with fans and bands equally encased, the f
