BY STEPHEN CHADENGA A GWERU-BASED company Mansach Gases yesterday donated food items and other goods to victims of flash floods at Mtapa and Shumba halls evacuation centres. Residents affected by the flash floods that hit the city in the past weeks were moved to various centres established in the Midlands capital after their houses were filled with water. Mansach Gases donated items such as sugar, cooking oil, mealie-meal, salt and kapenta among other items. The company’s managing director, Salimu Mbwana said it was important for the corporate world to assist people affected by the flash floods. “It is now more than two weeks since these families moved from their homes,” Mbwana said. “Some of us might have already forgotten about them but it’s critical that we become each other’s keepers especially in times of need.” He said the company was looking into ways to provide gas to the affected families. Gweru United Progressive Residents and Ratepayers Development Trust (GUPRRDT) sourced the donations on behalf of the victims. GUPRRDT housing portfolio committee member, Maisiri Zindoga appealed to other well-wishers to chip in to support the affected residents. Councillor for ward 6, Godfrey Giwa commended Mansach Gases for the donation saying it would help the distressed families. “This is a timeous donation which comes at a time victims of flash floods lost their property and food items in the past weeks,” he said. Incessant rains that pounded Gweru in recent weeks, coupled with poor drainage systems left many residents particularly in low-lying areas affected by flash floods.

Aromatic oil extracts for perfumes from Egypt's Gharbiya region make up over half the global supply.
Egypt and India are the leading producers of jasmine extract, making up around 95 percent of supply, according to the International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades (IFEAT).
Egyptian farmers have long complained that the low production costs of their big rival India drive their prices down.
Around 70 percent of the region's floral production is handled by the Fakhry essential oils factory
\"There are some competitors to Egypt (in Jasmine production) such as India and Tunisia, that's why we are trying to produce the best quality we have,\" said Badr Atef ,a manager at the Fakhry essential oils factory.
Jasmine trade is estimated to pull in some $6.5 million annually for Egypt, providing income to around 50,000 people.
The scent of flowers is intense.
According to Atef, factory owner Ahmed Fakhry was inspired to farm jasmine when, as a young student in the 1960s, he visited the town of Grasse, the birthplace of French perfumes, on the Cote d'Azur.
Returning to Egypt, Fakhry introduced his new perfume knowledge and set up commercial jasmine farming and processing.
\"Now 20 tonnes of jasmine flowers are picked daily \" in Egypt, Atef said, estimating that some 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of the scented plant are farmed in the Gharbiya region.
From all those flowers, some five tonnes of dense jasmine paste is finally produced each year.
But the economic impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic has been harder still, with demand dropping sharply, farmers said.

By SARA CLINE and GILLIAN FLACCUS Associated Press/Report for America PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Relief from putrid, dangerous air spewing from massive wildfires across the West won't come until later in the week or beyond, scientists and forecasters say, and the hazy and gunk-filled skies might stick around for even longer. People in Oregon, Washington and parts of California were struggling under acrid yellowish-green smog — the worst, most unhealthy air on the planet according to some measurements. It seeped into homes and businesses, sneaked into cars through air conditioning vents and caused the closure of iconic locations such as […]

FORMER Dynamos defender Victor Kamhuka has been called into the Warriors camp after the withdrawal of United States-based duo of goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva and defender Tendai Jirira. BY HENRY MHARA Zimbabwe will play Algeria in back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) group H qualifiers between November 12 and 16. The first match is set for the Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers on Thursday before the return fixture at the National Sports Stadium in Harare four days later. Kamhuka, now based in Myanmar, is a replacement for Jirira who failed to get clearance from the United States government to travel because of the coronavirus regulations. Mkuruva, who was set to make a return to the team since 2017, has also been affected, and will not make the trip to Algiers. Warriors general manager Wellington Mupandare confirmed that the big defender, who plays for top-flight side Ayeyawady United, has been roped into the squad by coach Zdravko Logarušić. “The coach has said he wants to assess him so he has been called in. If he impresses he will be included in the squad,” Mupandare said. Kamhuka, who moved to Myanmar last year, is in the country and has joined five players already in camp. Mupandare said there won’t be a replacement for Mkuruva, leaving Elvis Chipezeze and Talbert Shumba to tussle for the number one jersey. The inclusion of Kamhuka, who plays in what many consider an obscure league is, however, likely to divide opinion among the Warriors supporters. A section of supporters has already raised questions over the inclusion of some players including vice-captain Ovidy Karuru who is currently clubless after leaving a modest South African club, Stellenbosch. Some have also questioned the inclusion of Jirira who plays for Detroit City in the third tier league in the US. Logarušić has also given first national team call-up to the England-based defending duo of Jordan Zemura and Adam Chicksen. Striker David Moyo, who previously featured for the team in a friendly match, has also been called and will be looking to make his first appearance in a competitive match. Five players who had already joined camp by yesterday are Karuru, Chipezeze, Devine Lunga, King Nadolo and Alec Mudimu. The majority are expected to arrive today ahead of the trip tomorrow night, posing a huge problem for Logarušić who will not have enough time to assess the players. It will be the Croat’s first competitive assignment since taking over the Warriors’ top job last year. Zimbabwe are second going into the third Group H qualifier on Thursday with four points, two behind log leaders Algeria. Botswana with one point are third while Zambia anchor the group with zero points. Two top teams from the group will qualify for the finals next year. Warriors squad: Goalkeepers: Elvis Chipezeze, Talbert Shumba Defenders: Jimmy Dzingai, Alec Mudimu, Jordan Zemura, Teenage Hadebe, Divine Lunga, Tendai Darikwa, Adam Chicksen Midfielders: Marshall Munetsi, Ovidy Karuru, Butholezwe Ncube, Tafadzwa Rusike, Kuda Mahachi, Knowledge Musona, Terrence Dzvukamanja,
