Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.
The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.
The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.
Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.
Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola says there is no need for the establishment of a special Covid-19 anti-corruption unit.
President Donald Trump signalled Sudan would be removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism if it pays compensation of $335 million to American terror victims and their families.
The move would open the door for Sudan to receive much needed international loans and aid to revive its battered economy.
Sudan has been listed since 1993 when al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden lived in the country as a guest of the government.
The compensation relates to the victims of the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, attacks conducted by Bin Laden’s al-Qaida network while he was living in Sudan which killed more than 200 people.
Trump made the announcement on Twitter.
Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who took office last year, welcomed the announcement, also on Twitter.
The move could also help Sudan's transition to democracy. Last year a popular uprising led to the military overthrow of autocratic leader Omar al-Bashir.
A military-civilian government now rules the country with elections possible in late 2022.
The announcement, just two weeks ahead of the U.S. presidential election, also comes as the Trump administration works to get other Arab countries, such as Sudan, to join the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain’s recent recognition of Israel.

By ERIC TUCKER Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A New York tabloid's puzzling account about how it acquired emails purportedly from Joe Biden's son has raised some red flags. One of the biggest involves the source of the emails: Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani has traveled abroad looking for dirt on the Bidens, developing relationships with shadowy figures, including a Ukrainian lawmaker who U.S. officials have described as a Russian agent and part of a broader Russian effort to denigrate the Democratic presidential nominee. Yet Giuliani says foreign sources didn't provide the Hunter Biden emails. He says a laptop containing the emails […]

By EDITH M. LEDERER Associated Press UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Twenty-five years ago, the world's nations came together to make sure that half of Earth's population gained the rights, power and status of the other half. It hasn't happened, and the U.N. chief urged people everywhere Thursday to 'push back' against the forces holding up equality for women. Addressing the opening session of a high-level meeting to commemorate the landmark 1995 U.N. women's conference in Beijing, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said 'this is fundamentally a question of power.' And in today's more divided, conservative and still very male-dominated world, that power […]

By AAMER MADHANI and ZEKE MILLER Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Gone are the days when President Donald Trump held forth daily at the White House podium flanked by members of his coronavirus task force. And the days when Vice President Mike Pence and other task force officials would head to Trump's office to brief him immediately after their meetings. The White House won't say when Trump last met with the task force. In the week since he emerged from coronavirus isolation, Trump has demonstrated new determination to minimize the threat of the virus that has killed more than 215,000 […]

By ANDREW TAYLOR Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is backing a $400 per week pandemic jobless benefit and is dangling the possibility of a COVID-19 relief bill of $1.6 trillion as last-ditch, pre-election negotiations hit a critical phase Thursday. But pessimism is again seeping into the talks and the two sides switched back to attacking each other in public. The offer by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on unemployment is higher than many Republicans would like in any potential COVID deal with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Significant, possibly unbridgeable hurdles remain. After Pelosi said the new offer still […]

One day after Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan lifted a stay-at-home order and allowed some businesses to reopen amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, leaders in Prince George's and Montgomery counties announced Thursday their respective jurisdictions aren't ready to join the rest of the state.
County executives and health officers from both jurisdictions laid out the benchmarks that would need to be met before attempting to reopen, including a two-week decline in coronavirus cases and deaths, adequate daily testing of residents, and an increase in testing kits, personal protective equipment and other materials.
Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said the stay-at-home order in the majority-Black jurisdiction will remain in effect through June 1.
Before she announced the order, Alsobrooks offered condolences to the family of an employee in the county health department who died this week after contracting COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman announced late Thursday afternoon that the county will follow Hogan’s order and allow some businesses to reopen at 5 p.m. Friday.

The parking lot of a Montgomery County community center was filled Saturday with boxes of groceries and volunteers as Rev. Matthew L. Watley and members of Kingdom Fellowship African Methodist Episcopal Church distributed food to people in need amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Such distributions to the community are nothing new for Watley and his Silver Spring congregation, but many who took bags of groceries at Saturday's event only recently fell on hard times, having lost jobs because their places of employment had closed to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.
\"We have giving out 700 boxes of food and the need is growing,\" said Watley, whose church is one of many houses of faith and charitable organizations that gave out food over the weekend.
On Tuesday, the Archdiocese of Washington and Catholic Charities will distribute 800 boxes of groceries and family meals in the west parking lot of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Northeast.
In two previous events in Prince George's County, their volunteers gave out 1,400 boxes of groceries and 1,400 ready-to-eat family meals.

Former Burundian President Pierre Buyoya, who is the current High Representative of the African Union for Mali and the Sahel, \"rejected\" Wednesday his conviction in absentia in Burundi to life imprisonment for the murder of his predecessor Melchior Ndadaye in 1993.
\"We reject these judgements, which can in no way commit us,\" a statement from him signed by co-defendants says.
\"Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the new government has just proved to the world that it follows this line of lawlessness,\" they said.
Melchior Ndadaye, Burundi's first democratically elected president and the first Hutu to come to power, was assassinated in October 1993 in a military coup that would lead the country into a civil war between the army, dominated by the Tutsi minority, and Hutu rebel groups. It will result in 300,000 deaths until 2006.
Mr. Ndadaye had succeeded Mr. Buyoya, carried by the army in power in 1987 and who became president again in a new coup between 1996 and 2003, before handing over power to Domitien Ndayizeye, a Hutu, under a peace agreement signed in 2000 in Arusha (Tanzania).
Mr. Buyoya was convicted of \"attack against the head of state, attack against the authority of the state and attack tending to bring about massacre and devastation\", according to the text which only contains the operative part (conviction and sentence) of the decision handed down by the Supreme Court.
The name of Pierre Buyoya had already been cited in connection with this assassination, without the beginning of any proof being provided.
Eighteen senior military and civilian officials close to the former head of state were sentenced to the same sentence, three others to 20 years in prison for \"complicity\" in the same crimes and only one, the former transitional Prime Minister, Antoine Nduwayo, was acquitted.
Only five defendants, four retired Tutsi high-ranking officers and a serving police general, Ildephonse Mushwabure, were present at the trial.
According to Mr. Buyoya, the trial was conducted \"in violation of the Arusha Accords\" and was neither \"fair\" nor \"equitable\" as the rights of the defence were allegedly violated.

By DALAL MAWAD Associated Press BEIRUT (AP) — A year ago, hundreds of thousands of Lebanese took to the streets protesting taxes and a rapidly deteriorating economic crisis. A spontaneous and hopeful nationwide movement was born, denouncing an entire political establishment that had for decades pushed Lebanon toward collapse. Today, as crises multiply and the country dives deeper into uncertainty and poverty, protests seem to have petered out. Even widespread anger over a devastating explosion at Beirut's port on Aug. 4, blamed on government negligence, failed to re-ignite the movement. It is both bewildering and frustrating for those who believe […]
