(Jamaica Gleaner) TORONTO’S POLICE chief, Mark Saunders, surprised many with the announcement that he will retire from the service on July 31 – eight months before his contract is set to expire.

Saunders mentioned the Transformational Task Force that he co-chaired with former Toronto Police Services Board member Andy Pringle as one of the highlights of his law-enforcement career.

However, Donna G., a community radio host, thinks Saunders is “a man caught between the black and the blue”.

She wondered how Saunders could “move forward as chief of police with ‘Black Lives Matter’ and calls to defund the police”.

Meanwhile, Yvette Blackburn, a former vice-chair of the police service’s Black Community Consultative Committee and a former member of the Police and Community Engagement Review Committee, says Saunders should be applauded for being successful in his role.

Félicien Kabuga, who was arrested this month in France for crimes related to the Genocide against the Tutsi after 26 years on the run, will be transferred to Arusha, Tanzania once conditions allow, a judge has ruled.

William Sekule, the duty judge at the Arusha branch of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, made the ruling on Thursday following a motion by prosecutors to temporarily transfer Kabuga to The Hague.

Judge Sekule reiterated that the rules reflect that accused persons indicted by the ICTR, such as Kabuga, will be transferred to and detained at the Arusha branch of the Mechanism from where proceedings will be conducted.

The judge also contended that the motion didn't demonstrate that Kabuga's anticipated transfer to Arusha was an actual or likely impediment to his transfer into the custody of the Mechanism.

The same call was recently reiterated by the African Court for Human and People's Rights, which said in a statement that justice would be better served if Kabuga's case is referred to the national jurisdiction in Rwanda.

Pitching a working timeline of four to six weeks for the reopening of the tourism industry, the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) says it fully supports the pretesting of guests.

The lobby, which last weekend called for the Government to set a timeline for the reopening of the industry, said these were two of the main areas of focus being proposed as part of the Tourism Task Force committee, led by Wilfred Baghaloo.

Airlines have also expressed an interest in starting in June,” Robinson confirmed to The Gleaner, adding that the tourism entities will be guided by a raft of protocols in order to provide a safe environment for their employees to return to work.

Citing the paradigm of a “new hospitality”, the JTA president argued that a hard timeline would “allow us to plan so that we can work backwards by implementing the required safety protocols, acquiring the necessary personal protective equipment, ( i.e., masks, shields, infrared thermometers), training of the employees on these protocols, along with a general sensitisation of the public and our international partners and potential guests”.

Last year alone, Jamaica earned US$3.7 billion from the tourism industry.

The public is advised that all attractions owned and operated by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) and its and subsidiary, the St. Ann Development Company (SADCo) remain closed at this time, however, they are being readied for a safe reopening.

The UDC is, therefore, in the process of implementing measures such as physical distancing protocols, sanitization stations,

digitization of services, and staff training as it prepares to reopen to the public.

Frank McKoy who leads the UDC Response and Recovery Task Force emphasized that “We are now presented with opportunities to use technology to reengineer UDC’s business operations within the context of the digital environment.”

This shift towards maximizing the use of online tools to enhance the client experience for attractions and other UDC operations is in keeping with the Government’s thrust towards a digital future.

The public is reminded that UDC-owned attractions are as follows:

Dunn’s River Falls and Park

Green Grotto Caves Attractions

Ocho Rios Bay Beach

Reach Falls

Pearly Beach West

Long Bay Beach Park

Bluefield’s Beach Park

Turtle River Park

Walter Fletcher Beach

Laughing Waters / Protocol House

The Corporation looks forward to welcoming visitors to our attractions and to introducing, in the near future, revamped services both in-person and via an updated digital presence.
