(Jamaica Gleaner) Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited took a $5-billion hit on its investment securities, which led to lower profit in the March quarter.
If you take those out, then our revenues increased by 15 per cent or $3.05 billion,” said Sagicor Group President and CEO Christopher Zacca.
Two of Sagicor’s four business segments posted lower profit: the employee insurance benefits line, down from $1.26 billion to $1 billion; and commercial banking, down from $364 million to $131 million due to loan loss provisions.
Outside the group’s core insurance and financial activities, Sagicor absorbed an $800-million impairment on its tourism assets due to the closure of hotels brought on by the pandemic, said Zacca.
Sagicor Group plans to proceed with the payment of a dividend at 40 cents per share to shareholders owning one per cent less of the company, but Zacca says the distributions await the approval of large owners.
“It is with great sadness that I have to announce to the fans of the Pointer Sisters that my sister, Bonnie, died this morning,” Anita Pointer said in a statement.
Bonnie recorded five albums with sisters Ruth, Anita and June, co-writing the act’s country hit “Fairytale” with Anita.
Anita and Bonnie Pointer recently released “Feels Like June,” a song in honor of their sister June, who died in 2006.
“The Pointer Sisters would never have happened had it not been for Bonnie,” Anita said.
Bonnie is survived by brothers Aaron and Fritz and sisters Ruth and Anita Pointer.
FOR SOME time it had not rained in Claremont, St Ann, but the showers came down yesterday, forcing supporters of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament (MP) for St Ann North East, Shahine Robinson, to seek shelter inside her home or other sections of the property.
Robinson, 66, lost her two-year battle with lung cancer on Friday, prompting an outpouring of love from well-wishers near and far and marking the second straight day that the ruling party was losing a member, after Thursday’s passing of former minister, Dr Neville Gallimore.
I fell in love with her before I was a political representative and every day I walk the Lime Hall division or North East St Ann constituency, I walk it feeling strong and proud,” she said.
Mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Michael Belnavis, and several councillors also visited the home of the late minister.
Belnavis, who Robinson replaced as constituency representative after his 1997 general election defeat to the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Danny Melville, described her as “an icon in St Ann, a mother to everyone in the constituency of North East St Ann.”

The Government's plans to resume efforts toward establishing a national identification for all Jamaicans suffered a serious financial setback with a significant reduction in funding in the newly tabled First Supplementary Estimates 2020/21.
This led to a meeting between members of the National Identification Systems (NIDS) team and representatives of the Opposition in early January, indicating a willingness on the part of the Opposition to support a new Bill.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has publicly stated his Government's intention to resume work on the NIDS legislation, and had promised to issue new drafting instructions with increased oversight and security provisions towards tabling a new Bill early this year.
However, just weeks after successfully piloting the 2020/21 estimates of expenditure through the House of Representatives in April, the Government was forced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to bring new supplementary estimates to the House on Wednesday, reflecting the drastic cut in funding.
The House of Representatives approved the National Identification and Registration (NIDS) Act in 2018.

“Having a child return home can be difficult on both parties. Your child may be a different individual now than when they left home. Some of the boundary issues that may come up during this time may include visitors in the time of a pandemic, privacy issues, and lack of respect for personal space and choices.”

Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, was on the defensive as the Opposition criticised the Government over its handling of the situation.
However, Johnson Smith said she would defer to Prime Minister Andrew Holness to answer some of the questions.
But Johnson Smith said the Opposition was making mischief.
“I do not wish for there to be room for misinformation and mischief because even as the Opposition is calling for unity in one breath, they are, through statement ... by Crawford in the guise of a question, creating mischief and causing for spreading of misinformation,” Johnson Smith hit back.
Johnson Smith insisted the administration had no knowledge of the ship’s intention to sail into Jamaican waters because the Government had still been in negotiations with Royal Caribbean.

ALMOST 10,000 Jamaicans and non-nationals are expected to return home by the end of June under the Government's controlled re-entry programme.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Friday that, in addition to 2,500 Jamaicans already in the island, 3,000 more are to return between June 14, and the Government is estimating that based on the number of people who have applied and other non-Jamaicans who may want to re-enter, there is the likelihood of another 7,000 entries by the end of the month.
There will then be three categories of travellers: Category 1- Jamaican nationals, and non-nationals who are ordinarily resident in Jamaica by virtue of work permit or marriage, or being the dependent of a national; Category- 2 would be non-nationals visiting for the purpose of vacation (tourism); and Category-3, which are non-nationals who are business travellers.
Protocols for business travellers coming to Jamaica for less than 14 days will be required to be tested on arrival.
Protocols for visitors (tourists) will be similar to those for Jamaican nationals, except that tourists will be subjected to a “Stay in Zone” Order, or a geographical area which will be called the COVID-19 Resilience Corridor.
DarQuan Jones, 22, said he was walking to his girlfriend’s house when he was attacked by the suspects around 3:25 a.m. in the south side of Des Moines, according to a police report.
DarQuan’s father, Daryl Jones Jr., said that the men broke multiple bones and had his son in a choke-hold.
When arrests are made, Daryl Jones Jr. and the NAACP said they want assault charges elevated to a hate crime if detectives determine the motive for the attack was influenced by racism, they said.
“After speaking with Quan, his family, and the witnesses that have come forward, if the story is as they state it is, then what occurred yesterday should be nothing less than a hate crime,” said Kameron Middlebrooks, president of the NAACP in Des Moines.
Daryl Jones Jr. said his son is recovering at home, happy to still have his life.
