Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

Opposition candidates in the Ivory Coast on Sunday called for a \"civil transition\" from incumbent President Alassane Ouattara's government, a day after the election.

Presidential hopefuls Pascal Affi N'Guessan and Henri Konan Bédié called for a boycott of the vote, saying it was \"unconstitutional\" for Ouattara to run for a third term.

N'Guessan said it was the \"end\" of Ouattara's mandate.

\"Opposition political parties and groups call for the opening of a civil transition to create the conditions for a fair, transparent, and inclusive presidential election,\" he said.

Deadly clashes erupted in Ivory Coast in August when Ouattara said a reform allowed him to reset a two-term presidential limit to run again, angering the opposition who called it an \"electoral coup\".

At least 30 people were killed in the pre-election violence, reviving fears of the 2010 vote which sparked a civil war that saw over 3,000 deaths.

Ouattara originally said he would step down and hand over the reins to the younger generation. But the sudden death of his chosen successor in July forced a change in his plans.

Votes are currently being counted from more than 20,000 polling stations and the result, by law, should be released in five days.

Numbers for voter turnout are yet to be released.

But Africanews' Yannick Djanhoun in Abidjan said some offices were not even able to open their doors to voters.

Residents of Ivory Coast's capital city Abidjan fear what will come next.

The city is calm this morning, but incertainty is till on everyone's mind.

Following yesterday's acts of violents in some of the country's major cities, many dread a return of the 2010 post electoral violence, that killed over 3 000 people.

\" We no longer want war, we want peace, so that what happened in 2010 never happens again. We ask those who are against it to come to their senses so democracy can move forward. We cannot developp a country in war and hate \", 67-year-old Moussa Doumbia, a local Resident of Abobo, in the capital city.

Life may just be like everyday on this market, however after months of violence, many wonder what will come next

\"We are afraid of what's to come, we are afraid of what will come next, Honestly we don't know how things are going to go, so we are afraid \" confesses Aicha Toure, a Vegetable seller.

Now according to this local resident, fear and weariness are on everyone's mind.

\" We're scared, the Ivorians are tired (of the situation), we're not going to spend our time with politicians, that's not where we're going to stay. Young people have to work, we Ivorians are united \" assures Local Resident Julien Yobouet.

Uncertainty has surronded the coming days. Ivoirians now wonder whether the release of even partial election results in the next five days could set off more unrest in the country, just like it did, a decade ago.

So far violence surronding the presidential elections in the country have left at least 30 dead since August, a number that is expected to change, in the coming hours.

US President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden launched a final campaign sprint on Saturday ahead of the November 3 presidential election.

With more than 91 million votes already cast, Trump and Biden are out of time to reshape the race.

They are instead focusing on their base and making sure that any potential supporters have either already voted or plan to do so in person.

Biden held his first in-person campaign events with former president Barack Obama on Saturday in the predominantly Black cities of Detroit and Flint, Michigan.

Obama will campaign for Biden on Monday in Georgia and in South Florida, another area of potential concern if Latino voters sit out the election.

On Saturday, Obama said Trump was a president “who goes out of his way to insult people just because they don’t support them”.

“With Joe and Kamala at the helm,” he said, “you’re not going to have to think about them every day. You’re not going to have to argue with your family about him every day.”

Biden planned to spend much of Sunday in Philadelphia, which is 30 miles from his longtime home in Wilmington, Delaware.

Biden established his campaign headquarters in Philadelphia.

The city gets intense focus because it’s such a deep trove of Democratic votes, especially nonwhite voters.

On Sunday, Trump continued his final campaign sprint in Michigan, where he will speak at 10 rallies in seven swing states.

Trump is down in the latest polls and is turning to these large gatherings to help keep his message in front of voters.

“This is a hell of a day. You guys must love Trump, this place is packed,” said Trump, who jokingly complained throughout his speech about the cold.

“It’s really a contest to see if we can all stand it. And we’ll get through it. And we’ll love it.”

Between the Lines :Phillip Chidavaenzi Title: The Scars Beneath Our Bracelets Author: Tariro Matibiri Publisher: Royalty Books (2020) ISBN: 978-1-77725-238-8 INTELLECTUAL property expert Tariro Matibiri documents women’s life experiences and how the scars from their battles are often hidden beneath their bracelets. This is about drawing priceless lessons from every life experience. Matibiri uses anecdotes like slices from different women’s lives to drive her message home: the dreamy newly-wed who is accidentally confronted by her husband’s cheating ways, the woman whose treasured friendship collapses in inexplicable circumstances, the young woman trying to map out her life after high school only to realise she lacks the necessary cartographical skill to do so. The author integrates her life experiences and those of other women in the book and emphasises that the nuggets you find scattered throughout the book like gold dust are culled from “life’s harshest moments; hers, and those of others”. The wisdom shared throughout the book will enable the reader to reflect on them and grow as a person. The author’s desire is to usher the reader to that place where they are able to improve their life emotionally. Matibiri is able to seamlessly integrate women’s life experiences into her writing, like that young woman whose dream marriage, perceived through rose-tinted spectacles, crashes down on the rocks of reality after discovering that her husband is seeing another woman behind her back. We also get to appreciate how women are often torn between two unpalatable choices: continuing with a casanova husband or dealing with the reality of being a single mother, itself an uncomfortable position in a society that is quick to pass judgments. The blame game in which everyone else tends to justify the husband’s actions, almost blaming the woman for the man’s cheating ways, is meticulously portrayed. And such knowledge must allow us to introspect concerning the roles we have played in that blame game. Another anecdote is about the collapse of a decade-long friendship. Matibiri writes: “Over the years, I have made and lost friends, largely because of miscommunication and distance, but lately I have come to understand that not everyone you start your life with will stick with you until the end. To embrace this, I have learnt the power in reaching out to ghosted friends to clear the air and move on. Where the process is unappreciated, I have learnt to respect the space that someone is in without allowing it to reflect who I am not.” (pp11). “Many times, our focus when we talk about love is on a romantic level or concerning our family. These past decades, and as an area of continuous growth, my focus when it comes to learning about love is with my female friends.” (pg11) You continue to grow into who you are destined to be.
