The U.S. criticized Tanzania’s arrest of eight opposition leaders during their party meeting on Wednesday, saying the action stifles democratic norms.

ACT-Wazalendo party leader Zitto Kabwe and other members were taken by authorities, citing alleged illegal assembly.“The police detained us for more than 30 hours,” Zitto told reporters, adding it was politically motivated.

Political tensions are rising in Tanzania ahead of the October general elections in which President John Magufuli plans to seek re-election.

The government also closed the Tanzania Daima newspaper following coverage critical of Magufuli’s administration.

“These actions follow a disconcerting pattern of intimidation toward opposition members, civil society and media outlets,” the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania said in a statement on its Twitter account.

Kilwa District Commissioner Christopher Ngubiagai couldn’t immediately comment on the allegations of politically-motivated arrests when contacted on Thursday. Magufuli has denied in the past he is cracking down on dissent.

Before the coronavirus reached Tanzania, things were arguably going according to plan for President John Magufuli.

COVID-19 arrives

After Tanzania confirmed its first case in mid-March, Magufuli went silent for about two weeks.

On 13 May, Zambia closed the Tunduma-Nakonde border with Tanzania after the Zambian district of Nakonde recorded 76 new COVID-19 cases in one day; it has since re-opened with added restrictions.

On 16 May, Kenya shut its borders with Tanzania, after many of its new recorded cases were of truck drivers from across the border.

If Zanzibar feels it has to follow Tanzania's neighbours in imposing tighter border controls from the mainland, this could provide another source of pressure on Magufuli's current approach.

The Ministry of Education was yesterday locked in a meeting to decide how schools will partially reopen two weeks from today after President Museveni allowed candidates to report.

In an earlier interview, the ministry's commissioner in charge of Business, Technical and Vocational Education Training, Ms Safinah Museene, said the May/June examinations for Uganda Nurses and Midwifery Examinations Board, Uganda Allied Health Examinations Board and Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board students had been indefinitely postponed due to the abrupt closure of the education institutions.

Ms Jennifer Kasule, the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) spokesperson, said they would adjust their examination timetable when schools resume to accommodate the lost time.

At the time of the lockdown, Ms Kalule said the board had not printed last year's candidates' certificates yet institutions of higher learning require that applicants submit the documents as proof that they sat and passed the examinations before admission to university.

By this time, Uneb would have completed registering Primary Seven, Senior Four and Senior Six candidates ahead of their end of cycle examinations in October.
