Some Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters in North East St Catherine say they will reject any outside candidate selected by the party hierarchy to replace Leslie Campbell, who is not seeking re-election.
The supporters told The Gleaner that they were informed by the constituency executive that plans are afoot for party leader and Prime Minister Andrew Holness to present Senator Kerensia Morrison to constituents as the party's standard-bearer in the next general election.
According to a long-standing party worker in the constituency, Verniel Parker, \"Any decision to put Morrison in the seat will be met with strong resistance by the people, who are tired of outside candidates who have failed over the years to deal with the problems of water and roads facing the constituency.\"
Scores of other supporters expressed similar sentiments and say they are ready to join forces to prevent any outside candidate from running.
Meanwhile, Campbell, who won the seat by 122 votes in 2016, told The Gleaner that he was replaced because some supporters, especially those in the Guys Hill area, made repeated claims to the party that he was not attending to the needs of the constituency.

Being in the unenviable position of having no councillors umbilically linked to his People’s National Party (PNP) operating inside the St Ann North West constituency, two-term Member of Parliament Dr Dayton Campbell has fired a salvo at the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) local government representatives.
Campbell said that councillors were not being held to account for their poor performances despite divisional allocations.
“Somehow they get away with doing very little because people blame the MP for things that the councillors are responsible for,” Campbell lamented outside of his constituency office in bustling Brown’s Town last week.
Campbell lost his strongest division – Brown’s Town – in the last local government election but argued that his performance as a member of parliament has been above par.

After a marathon six-hour hearing, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) today said it will rule on Wednesday at 3 pm on an appeal related to the March 2nd elections brought by PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo and PPP/C presidential candidate Irfaan Ali.
Jagdeo and Ali are appealing a Guyana Court of Appeal (CoA) decision which sought to insert the word “valid” into provisions of the constitution addressing the election of a President.
Though the CoA issued no specific orders, its decision inspired Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield to submit a much-criticized report to GECOM in which he single-handedly invalidated over 115,000 votes and sought to hand victory to APNU+AFC when the recount figure showed a win for the PPP/C.
On Wednesday when it hands down its decision, the CCJ panel headed by Justice Adrian Saunders will first have to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in this matter.
The CCJ decision could be a key moment in bringing a conclusion to the elections drama that has gripped the country since March 2nd.

After listening to more than six hours of submissions, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) yesterday set next Wednesday at 3pm to rule on whether it has jurisdiction to hear the appeal taken before it by PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo and PPP/C presidential candidate Irfaan Ali, challenging the decision of the local Court of Appeal to pronounce on the constitutional meaning of “votes cast” at the March 2 polls.
This means that Guyanese have at least another week before a declaration on the March 2 elections can be made and a new president sworn in.
President of the CCJ, Justice Adrian Saunders, at the end of the proceedings, which started at 9am and ended at just around 4:30pm, said that the court appreciates need for expeditiousness on their part even as they attempt to assimilate all of the submissions presented.
Given the generally perceived poor performances of the governments during this period it is no surprise that the three elections have been the most competitive (one seat majorities/minorities for the winner) in the history of Guyana’s elections.
As some writers have suggested, Guyana’s elections are dynamic because of the increased Mixed and Indigenous citizens, influx of youthful voters unburdened by loyalty or distrust, and older voters willing to give third (e.g. AFC) parties a voice in parliament.

Given the above, I am convinced all parties went into the 2020 election accepting the OLE and were well aware of the “bloat”.
Statements from observers and almost all the contesting parties suggest that GECOM election day staff and processes effectively thwarted most of the efforts to use the OLE illegally.
Why is there so much concern about the potential for lower voter turnout in communities of color, particularly among Black and Latino men? A good portion of the answer lies in the results of the 2016 Presidential Election, when, for the first time in twenty years, the nation saw a drop in the turnout rate for Black voters.
