Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

Since the onset of COVID-19 and the lockdown of The Netherlands until at least June 1, however, the country’s flower bulb farming sector has been severely affected.

One of the world’s largest flower gardens, Keukenhof in Lisse, is closed this year.

But with no tourists this year, the industry—and the country as a whole—have suffered severely.

Tourists typically spend some 80 billion euros, approximately $86.8 billion, per year, about 9% of The Netherlands’ gross national product.

Until this year, tourists typically arrive for the popular flower season from  mid-April to the end of May, with the majority coming from China, Japan, India, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia and Russia, as well as from all of southern Europe.

Caterina Jarboro was born one of three children in Wilmington, North Carolina, to an American Indian mother and a black father who was a local barber. She was christened Katherine Lee Yarborough at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Wilmington.  She received elementary school education at St. Thomas, and later attended Gregory Normal School.  Her parents died when she was thirteen years old, and in 1916, she traveled to Brooklyn, New York, to live with an aunt.

Jarboro studied music in New York where her exceptional ability soon became apparent. By 1921 she appeared in popular theater musicals, such as Sissle and Blake’s “Shuffle Along,” and later in James P. Johnson’s, “Running Wild.” Like many black musicians and performers, she sought more opportunity for study and experience in Europe. Under contract to the San Carlo Opera Company, Jarboro debuted in Verdi’s Aida in 1930 at the Puccini Theater in Milan, Italy.  She continued to study in France and to perform in small productions in Europe until 1932 when she returned to the United States.

In 1933 Alfredo Salmaggi, recruited her to perform Aida with the Chicago Civic Opera at the New York Hippodrome Theater. The music editor at the New York Times praised her vivid performance and her perfect Italian diction. This appearance made Jarboro the first black opera singer to perform with a major company in America.   First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt expressed gratitude to Salmaggi for introducing Jarboro and other black opera singers to the American stage in her column, “My Day,” in 1946.

Jarboro followed Aida with an outstanding performance of Seleka in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine in New York. She also created and performed the lead role in Cameron White’s Ouanga at the Chicago Ravinia Festival. The New York Metropolitan Opera Association invited her to become a member, but when they realized she was not Italian, but Afro-Indian, they denied her membership. After a lengthy and successful career she declined membership when a second invitation was extended.

Belgium is a small country in northwest Europe that joined Europes race for colonies in the late 19th century. Many European countries wanted to colonize distant parts of the world in order to exploit the resources and civilize the inhabitants of these less-developed countries. Belgium gained independence in 1830. Then, King Leopold II came to power in 1865 and believed that colonies would greatly enhance Belgiums wealth and prestige.

Leopolds cruel, greedy activities in the current Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi continue to affect the welfare of these countries today.

European adventurers experienced great difficulty in exploring and colonizing the Congo River Basin, due to the regions tropical climate, disease, and the resistance of the natives. In the 1870s, Leopold II created an organization called the International African Association. This sham was supposedly a scientific and philanthropic organization which would greatly improve the lives of native Africans by converting them to Christianity, ending the slave trade, and introducing European health and educational systems.

King Leopold sent the explorer Henry Morton Stanley to the region. Stanley successfully made treaties with native tribes, set up military posts, and forced most Muslim slave traders out of the region.

He acquired millions of square kilometers of central African land for Belgium. However, most of Belgiums government leaders and citizens did not want to spend the exorbitant amount of money that would be needed to maintain distant colonies. At the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, other European countries did not want the Congo River region.

King Leopold II insisted that he would maintain this region as a free-trade zone, and he was given personal control of the region, which was nearly eighty times larger than Belgium. He named the region the Congo Free State.

Leopold promised that he would develop his private property to improve the lives of the native Africans. He quickly disregarded all of his Berlin

While the Federal Government has extended the partial lockdown across the Federation to prevent further spread of COVID-19, some States in the North notably, Nassarawa, Gombe, Borno, Bauchi, Katsina and Kano States have lifted the ban for worship at Eid Praying Grounds with religious activities allowed for Christians too in their worship Centres.

While commending the Federal and State Governments on their efforts aimed at protecting the lives of the people and at the same time protecting their spiritual, medical and economic interest, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) believes that everybody must key-in into the Federal Government measures as dictated by the PTF ON COVID-19 headed by the SGF - Mr. Boss Mustapha because of its medical values so as to whether the storm of the pandemic.

Learning from how other Nations including China were able to surmount the problem of coronavirus, the greatest success came through the lockdown, cancellation of flights, intensive media campaign of medical prevention and solutions.

Medical experts continue to warn on the dangers of this virus - hence we sacrificed our 5 daily prayers by praying at home including the Taraweeh throughout this month to be safe.

While wishing us all happy Eid-il-Fitr Celebration, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria urges State Governments to enforce the lock-down order where ban has not been lifted, while the States that allowed religious gathering must monitor the conformity with the FG restrictions and observance of COVID-19 curtailment rules.
