INGLEWOOD — Students at Morningside High School are leading a community dialogue about creating equal opportunities for success for Black and Latino students in the Inglewood Unified School District.
“Our schools are not as good as if we were to go to La Tijera or Beverly Hills,” said senior Tristan Castillo, who serves as student body vice president at Morningside High School.
“I feel like this protest is more than just a Black Lives Matter thing, it’s for the community and all the people who are in the low-income communities who just want to be treated fairly,” Castillo added.
Castillo and Pilgrim also suggested that the district provide additional academic and community resources for all of its students.
He asked district officials to find more community partners who would be willing to donate their time and money to Inglewood schools.
PARENTS of grade six students are fuming as a result of incorrect information disseminated by the Ministry of Education regarding the portal on which they should have registered on Wednesday in order to access the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) placement results at 4:00 pm today.
On Wednesday, acting Chief Education Officer Dr Kasan Troupe told JIS News that the special parent portal, called the DEAMS Performance Information System (DPIS), could be accessed via the link www.parent.dpisonline.com as of 5:00 pm that evening.
On accessing the correct portal, parents were again set back, as to complete the registration and change the password, for security purposes, an activation code was required.
The Ministry of Education yesterday assured parents that the system had been stress-tested to ensure it stands up to the flood of parents and guardians who would access it at 4:00 pm today.
Acknowledging the challenges parents had experienced registering on the portal, the ministry said in a release yesterday that the issues are being addressed and would not affect the release of results today.

Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) spokesperson Katlego Rasebitse said sex workers had been affected by the lockdown.
Rasebitse said sex workers were also entitled to receive social relief, including food parcels, from the government.

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Mike Leake also has decided not to play this season, according to a statement from his agent.
The news comes a week after Major League Baseball announced its season will start next month, after the pandemic upended the original schedule.
“Ryan Zimmerman and Joe Ross have decided not to participate in the 2020 season for the personal health and safety of themselves and their loved ones,” Mike Rizzo, Nationals General Manager, said in a statement.
The news of these cases came a day after MLB announced the 2020 season will begin July 23 or 24 with a schedule to play 60 games.

Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. The decision overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896, which allowed state-sponsored segregation, insofar as it applied to public education. Handed down on May 17, 1954, the Warren Courts unanimous (9–0) decision stated that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. As a result, de jure racial segregation was ruled a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. This ruling paved the way for integration and was a major victory of the Civil Rights Movement,[1] and a model for many future impact litigation cases.[2] However, the decisions fourteen pages did not spell out any sort of method for ending racial segregation in schools, and the Courts second decision in Brown II, 349 U.S. 294 (1955) only ordered states to desegregate with all deliberate speed.
For much of the sixty years preceding the Brown case, race relations in the United States had been dominated by racial segregation. This policy had been endorsed in 1896 by the United States Supreme Court case of Plessy v. Ferguson, which held that as long as the separate facilities for the separate races were equal, segregation did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment (no State shall ... deny to any person ... the equal protection of the laws).
The plaintiffs in Brown asserted that this system of racial separation, while masquerading as providing separate but equal treatment of both white and black Americans, instead perpetuated inferior accommodations, services, and treatment for black Americans. The DeKalb County School District will continue preparing its road map for bringing students and teachers back to classrooms for the upcoming school year, district officials said after state officials announced guidance for K-12 school systems.
“The DeKalb County School District will now align its framework plan with the state’s guidance,” Superintendent Ramona Tyson said.
“The District appreciates the fact that (the Georgia Department of Education) recognizes local school districts need the authority and flexibility to meet varying complexities.”
Should the coronavirus’ spread be considered substantial when school is set to begin, for example, school buildings would close and be disinfected, with districts implementing distance learning and delivering meals to students.

“With most East African countries under strict restrictions to curb the coronavirus, truck drivers are among the few allowed to circulate as they ferry essential goods across the region.
Faced with a similar problem of coronavirus-spreading truck drivers, it was reported a few days ago that Zambia fell back to its sex workers to help trace people who had contracted new infections at the town of Nakonde, near its border with Tanzania.
