South Africa will be moving to Alert Level 3 of the lockdown on June 1, but the coronavirus will get much worse, before it gets better, President Cyril Ramaphosa said in an address to the nation on Sunday evening.

Here are some of the key points:

ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA ON SOUTH AFRICA’S RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC UNION BUILDINGS, TSHWANE 24 MAY 2020

It is exactly 10 weeks since we declared a national state of disaster in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

There are nearly 60 000 community health workers who have been going door-to-door across the country to identify possible cases of coronavirus.

This risk-adjusted approach is guided by several criteria, including the level of infections and rate of transmission, the capacity of health facilities, the extent of the implementation of public health interventions and the economic and social impact of continued restrictions.

A hotspot is defined as an area that has more than 5 infected people per every 100 000 people or where new infections are increasing at a fast pace.The following metros have been identified as coronavirus hotspots: Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Ethekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and Cape Town.

President Trump is tempting Christians to crowd into churches, implying your God will protect you.

Here in California, Black COVID-19 patients are 2.7 times more likely to be hospitalized than their Non-Hispanic, White counterparts, and they “tend to arrive at healthcare facilities sicker and with more severe symptoms,” according to a study released just last week by Sutter Health, a non-profit healthcare network based in Sacramento.

“I’m appealing to all my men and women of faith to reject that because, clearly, we are not in the position to safely tell congregants of any faith to come in person and worship without risking their lives and risking their health,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton, President an CEO of National Action Network.

Fortunately, this past Friday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Gov Newsom’s ban on in-person church services, after President Trump reclassified churches as essential last week.

The only way Black people should go back to church like the President is suggesting is if they see the Blood of the Lamb painted over the door and they personally hear God speak loud and clear, “you will be safe in this church building.”

It was under the Malian king Mansa Musa that Timbuctu became one of the major cultural centers not only

of Africa but of the entire world. Under Mansa Musas patronage, vast libraries were built

and madrasas (Islamic universities) were endowed; Timbuctu became a meeting-place of

the finest poets, scholars, and artists of Africa and the Middle East. Even after the power of

Mali declined, Timbuctu remained the major Islamic center of sub-Saharan Africa.

Timbuctus sister city of Djenne was also an important center of learning. Recent

archaeology has placed the antiquity of Djenne at 200 to 250BC. After the death of Mansa

Musa, the power of Mali began to decline. Losing its sphere of influence, its subject states

began to break off and establish themselves independently. In 1430 Tuareg Berbers in the

north seized much of Malis territory, including the city of Timbuctu. Under the leadership of Askia Mohammed, Timbuctu once again became a prosperous

commercial city, reaching a population of 100,000 people. Merchants and traders traveled

from Asia, the Middle East and Europe to exchange their exotic wares for the gold of

Songhay. Timbuctu gained fame as an intellectual center rivaling many others in the Muslim

world. Students from various parts of the world came to Timbuctus famous University of

Sankore to study Law and Medicine. Medieval Europe sent emissaries to the University of

Sankore to witness its excellent libraries with manuscripts and to cosult with the learned

mathematicians, astronomers, physicians, and jurists whose intellectual endeavors were said

to be paid for out of the kings own treasury.

(Reuters) – Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Sunday called for protesters against police brutality not to turn to violence as unrest flared in U.S. cities overnight.

Biden issued a statement just after midnight as protesters in several major U.S. cities vented outrage at the death of a black man shown on video gasping for breath as a white Minneapolis policeman knelt on his neck.

Biden will face President Donald Trump in the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Biden’s remarks echoed a statement on Saturday by prominent black civil rights activist and U.S. Representative John Lewis of Georgia.

On Monday night, May 24, at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue South in Minneapolis, Minnesota, an onlooker took a video of a Black man, who’s now been identified at George Floyd, being forced to the ground by four cops.

One officer pinned Floyd to the ground by shoving his knee into his neck.

“For five minutes, we watched a white officer press his knee into a Black man’s neck.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing the man’s family, noted Floyd was reportedly approached by police for allegedly using a counterfeit bill at a nearby store.

“We will seek justice for the family of George Floyd, as we demand answers from the (Minneapolis) Police Department.

Therefore, let us be reminded that it was during the Battle of Badr, on the 17th day of Ramadan to be exact, that Allah (SWT’s) most beloved Prophet Muhammed (saas) pleaded to his Lord for Mercy against the Quraish who appeared far more powerful in outnumbering the believers.

Their recent On the Leaves Townhall, moderated by The Village Auntie, Angelica Lindsey-Ali, included: Community Outreach Director and Michigan Muslim Community Council Imam Mika’il Stewart; Grammy-nominated Singer, MC, Songwriter and Activist Maimouna Youssef (aka MuMu Fresh); Director, Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) in Atlanta Imam Mansoor Sabree; and Award-Winning Author of Black Seeds and 2 Parts Oxygen, Artist Tariq Toure.

Alhamdulillah, with over 10 years’ experience in K-16 education, National Black Muslim COVID Coalition’s co-founder, Sis.

Quite naturally, the unjust murder of Ahmaud produced feelings of helplessness that most African American parents endure – the inability to fully protect our children.

Dr. Rashad is also asking for all Muslim therapists, counselors, psychologists, social workers and clinicians to answer the call and join Muslim Wellness Foundation and National Black Muslim COVID Coalition’s efforts.

Mahabir, 32, was sentenced in the past to three months in prison on a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against the same victim.

Police prosecutor Reagan Ramanan told the court that the victim had last year obtained a protection order, valid for two years, from June 2019 to August 2021.

In speaking with Crawford, Mahabir admitted that he knew about the protection order but said he had not been served with a copy.

Crawford gave him a copy and told him it was noted on the order that, at the court, Mahabir had waived his right to be served with the document.

In sentencing Mahabir to three months hard labour on each of the offences before her, the magistrate told him to use his days in custody to think about how difficult it would be if he were to be charged with murder.

S – When a person is rushed into the emergency room short of breath in respiratory distress, he needs immediate relief before he fatigues, becomes exhausted he stops breathing.

Yet the onslaught of COVID patients into hospitals and the closure of small businesses in response to the stay at home orders has placed the health care system and the economy both in severe distress.

There is COVID-19 testing and increasing targeted stimulus checks to small businesses and the general population, but still there is no guarantee that these treatment measures will be enough to turn these systems around and prevent them from collapsing.

We can start with small moves which have  a great collective impact, such as:

1) Continuing to avoid the emergency room – using it only when we must;

2) Continuing the use of self-care strategies and herbal medicines in concert with your physician;

3) Restructure our business organizations and plans to provide for our communities’ needs within a contracted economy;

5) Plant family gardens everywhere possible, eg.
