Nine people, including one police officer, have died in the West African state of Guinea, the security ministry said Wednesday, following days of unrest after a tense weekend presidential election.
In a statement, the ministry pointed to shootings and stabbings in the capital Conakry and elsewhere in the country since Sunday's presidential vote.
\"This strategy of chaos (was) orchestrated to jeopardise the elections of October 18, \" the ministry said, adding that many people had been injured and property was damaged.
Clashes were ongoing in Conakry on Wednesday, where a security officer, Mamadou Keganan Doumbouya, told the press that at least three people had died.
And a local doctor, who declined to be named, said he had received two dead bodies, and nine injured people, at his clinic.
The violence follows the high-stakes election in which President Alpha Conde ran for a third term in a controversial bid that had already sparked mass protests.
With tensions already running high, Guinea's main opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo on Monday declared victory in the election -- before the announcement of the official results, which are expected this week.
Opposition supporters are deeply suspicious about the fairness of the poll, although the government insists that it was fair.
Much of the tension in Guinea centres on Conde's candidacy.
In March, the 82-year-old president pushed through a new constitution which he argued would modernise the country. It also allowed him to bypass a two-term limit for presidents, however.
Security forces repressed mass protests against the move from October last year, killing dozens of people.
On Wednesday, plumes of black smoke rose over an opposition stronghold in the capital Conakry, where protesters erected barricades and lit fires, an AFP journalist saw.
Youths in alleyways also hurled stones at police officers stationed along a main artery who fired back tear gas canisters.
The security ministry stated that \"a police officer was lynched to death\" in a Conakry suburb, without specifying when the attack occurred.
In a social media post earlier on Wednesday, Conde appealed for \"calm and serenity while awaiting the outcome of the electoral process\".
- Clashes and barricades -
Ten candidates are in the race besides alongside frontrunners Conde and Diallo, old political rivals who traded barbs in a bitter campaign.
Despite fears of violence after the pre-vote clashes, polling day was mostly calm.
Then Diallo's self-proclaimed election victory ratcheted up tensions, and celebrations by his supporters descended into violent clashes with security forces on Monday.
The opposition politician said that security forces killed three youngsters that night, although AFP was unable to confirm the details.
Security forces also barricaded Diallo inside his house, the politician said on Tuesday.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in South Africa on Wednesday to voice outrage at the shooting of peaceful demonstrators in Nigeria.
Africa's most populous country has faced growing unrest as a protest over brutality by a Nigerian police unit known as SARS ballooned into wider grievances against the government.
Witnesses said gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 people in the main city of Lagos on Tuesday, with Amnesty International reporting that several people were killed.
On Wednesday, demonstrators draped in the national flag of Nigeria and chanting liberation slogans marched to Abuja's embassy in Pretoria carrying banners reading \"End police brutality\".
Another group of about 400 people in Cape Town, mostly Nigerian nationals, vowed to continue picketing until there was change in Nigeria.
Well-known South African rap star AKA voiced solidarity with the people of Nigeria, saying: \"How can people shoot to KILL their own countrymen and women?\"

Today, we will open our ears to the address by President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he gives his State of the Nation Address at Parliament Building. The address comes in the midst of the coronavirus that has torn the world with at least 41 million affected so far and more than 1,1 million deaths recorded. People of all professions have succumbed to this terrible virus. Europe is in the midst of a second wave of the virus and a lot of British cities have moved to level two and three of lockdown. This is a calamity for sure. Globally, health employees have been saluted for their spirited efforts in trying to contain the coronavirus. Zimbabwe did its best despite the numerous challenges that are bedevilling the health sector. Despite the strike by nurses and doctors during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the private sector stood firm. A lot of lives were saved despite the limited resources. So many treatment modalities were employed and we succeeded during that phase. We are hopeful that we will not be hit by a second wave of infections considering the high degree of complacency, ignorance and defiance by the general population. Health delivery system is the organisation of people, institutions and resources that deliver healthcare services to meet the needs of the population. Included here are issues of accessibility, expenditure and resources. DAWN Properties Limited shareholders on Tuesday approved a historic resolution which will see the company being acquired by hotel group African Sun Limited in exchange for shares in the hotelier. BY Taurai Mangudhla An extraordinary general meeting held in the capital approved two major resolutions, effectively completing the voting process. This was despite reports the deal is under investigation by markets regulator, Security Exchange Commission amid concerns minorities will be prejudiced as shares are being sold below prevailing market rates. In terms of the proposal, the entire issued ordinary shares of Dawn will be acquired in exchange for an issuance of the African Sun Limited ordinary shares listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange through an issuance of one African Sun ordinary share for every 3,988075746 Dawn ordinary shares held, company secretary Markus de Klerk said in a circular on results of the extraordinary general meeting (EGM). “Shareholders are advised that all resolutions put to the vote at the EGM of shareholders of Dawn Properties Limited held on October 19 2020 were passed,” de Klerk said. The first resolution was that the proposed transaction being the offer made by African Sun to acquire up to 1 005 of the issued share capital of Dawn by means of a share swap through the issuance of 616 126 718 new African Sun ordinary shares to Dawn shareholders at a swap ratio of one African Sun ordinary share for every 3,988075946 Dawn ordinary shares. The resolution clearly specified that Dawn shareholders who accept the offer will become shareholders in African Sun and Dawn may become a subsidiary of African Sun. The second resolution was in respect of directors’ authorisation and empowerment to take all steps and actions to give effect to the first ordinary resolution and to implement the transaction including signing all resolutions and agreements for the purpose. Both resolutions sailed through with a 91,11% vote inclusive of Arden Capital Limited’s votes and 86,15% exclusive of Arden Capital Limited’s votes, respectively. Arden Capital, formerly Brainworks, is the majority shareholder in Dawn with just under 52% shareholding. Dawn owns hotels that are being leased by African Sun. African Sun is also controlled by Arden Capital. Dawn recently announced plans to terminate its listing on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE). In a half year results statement for 2020, Dawn said the board received an offer from African Sun Limited to acquire 100% of the issued shares of Dawn in May this year. African Sun has stated that upon completion of this transaction, Dawn will be delisted from the ZSE.
Nigerians protesting against police brutality stayed on the streets in Lagos on Wednesday, breaking the government curfew following a night of chaotic violence in which demonstrators were fired upon, sparking global outrage.
Shots were fired Wednesday as young demonstrators set up barricades by the Lekki toll plaza in Lagos, where protesters had been fired upon Tuesday night, causing numerous injuries although officials said no deaths.
One protester told The Associated Press that his brother was shot and killed in the previous day's demonstrations and that he himself had been hurt in the leg.
Gunfire could be heard across Lagos, Nigeria's largest city of 14 million, including on the highway to the airport, at a major bus station, outside the offices of a television station and at the Lekki tollgates. Smoke could be seen billowing from several points in central Lagos.
Demonstrations and gunfire were also reported in several other Nigerian cities, including the capital city, Abuja.
The nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality have rocked Nigeria for more than two weeks. They started after a video circulated of a man being beaten, apparently by officers of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, known as SARS.
In response to the protests, the government announced it would disband the SARS unit, which Amnesty International says has been responsible for many cases of torture and killings.
The demonstrators' demands have widened to include calls for accountable government, respect for human rights and an end to corruption in Africa's most populous nation of 196 million.
Despite massive oil wealth and one of Africa's largest economies, the bulk of Nigeria's 200 million people have high levels of poverty and lack of basic services, as a result of rampant corruption, charge rights groups.
A large number of Black children have lost a family member or caregiver since the beginning of the pandemic.
BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) insists the quality of its potable water is 94% compliant with the benchmarks set by the Standard Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) despite the rise in diarrhoea in the city. BY NQOBANI NDLOVU Several suburbs have recorded diarrhoeal cases at a time residents are subjected to water-rationing following the decommissioning of the city’s three supply dams. Recently, residents complained that they were receiving foul-smelling water, but council blamed it on ageing pipes. A recent report by the council’s water supplies and action committee said quality tests conducted by the local authority showed that they were compliant with SAZ standards. “The percentage chemical quality compliance for potable water at Criterion, Ncema and Cowdray Park treatment plants was at 100% on average for all plants according to Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) prescribed limits for water suitable for human consumption,” the report read. “Overall bacteriological quality of potable water from Cowdray Park, Ncema, Criterion and consumer points was at 94,38% compliance to SAZ standards.” The SAZ is the national standards body for Zimbabwe. Formed in 1957 and incorporated in 1960, the association is a non-profit entity charged with the responsibility of certifying the quality of most non-medical goods. Meanwhile, the same report shows that city's sewage effluent disposal did not meet the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) requirements. “During the month of August 2020, wastewater discharged from municipal sewage treatment plants to the natural environment did not meet the Ema effluent disposal requirements,” the report read. “Constant breakdowns of infrastructure and low inflows at most of the treatment plants continued to compromise the quality of final effluent disposed of in the environment. Removal of organic pollutants and nutrients (phosphate and ammonia) remain a big challenge for the majority of the treatment plants.”

In main constituencies, Condé won a majority of votes according to the electoral authority but Opposition supporters are deeply suspicious about the fairness of the poll.
\"Now it is for all of us to fight to preserve, to defend, our victory and you know that it is threatened by Alpha Condé who had no voters but an army of fraudsters,\" he said.
Diallo who has been barricaded inside his house by Security forces said it’s for safety reasons and called on his supporters to continue the protests.
\"My dear compatriots, I am counting on you to continue the fight until victory is achieved..., \" Diallo further stressed.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAid) yesterday announced two new food security programmes for Zimbabwe, Takunda and Amalima Loko, that will benefit about half a million people in the country’s dry regions. Care International will be the implementing partner for Takunda, funded to the tune of US$55 million, while Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture will run the US$75 million Amalima Loko. USAid Zimbabwe mission director Art Brown said the five-year programmes would target nearly 490 000 Zimbabweans in Matabeleland North, Masvingo and Manicaland provinces. “These two new programmes will build on the United States’ investment in Zimbabwean people and tackle the root causes of food insecurity and poverty by assisting almost a half a million vulnerable Zimbabweans to transition from humanitarian assistance to resilience and self-reliance,” Brown said. “Takunda, a Shona word meaning ‘we have overcome’, is a US$55 million programme implemented by CARE International. Takunda will target more than 301 000 Zimbabweans in two districts of Masvingo province, Chivi and Zaka, and two districts in Manicaland province, Buhera and Mutare.” Brown said the programme would empower women and youth to create sustainable livelihoods, improve agricultural practices and technology, and strengthen the governance and management of community assets and infrastructure, which will strengthen household and community resilience against shocks and stresses. Amalima Loko derived its name from the Ndebele word for a group of people coming together to achieve a common goal and a Tonga word that means “genuine”. “Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture will implement this US$75 million investment to improve food security for more than 188 000 vulnerable Zimbabweans in five districts of Matabeleland North province: Tsholotsho, Lupane, Nkayi, Hwange, and Binga,” the US embassy said. “The programme will increase access to food, improve nutritional behaviours, and educate communities on sustainable watershed management.” Since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, the American people, through USAid, have contributed over $3,2 billion in humanitarian assistance to Zimbabwe.

The women say a common problem is with big brand retailers, who mostly cater to light and medium skin tones.
\"Sometimes it's just harder to find the right place that sells the right foundation and stuff for my skin,\"said ons young woman. Another said it \"added to the feeling of being isolated, a bit I guess unwelcome to some degree. The fact that I had to go to special stores just to find my shade, it was a bit of an inconvenience for me.\"
It means they often have to do more research on the products and go to specialised shops
but new brands have recently emerged such as Fenty, by the singer Rihanna.
Other well-established brands such as Mac and Make Up For Ever are also developing new ranges for all skin tones.
But there is still a long road to go.
While make up retailers in many cities say they offer a wide variety of products.
In practice, some young women with dark skin say they have had to go to specialized shops which are often more expensive.
Amnesty International said late Tuesday there was “credible but disturbing evidence” that security forces in the megacity of Lagos had fatally shot protesters who were demonstrating against police brutality despite a new curfew going into effect.
The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso, said in a statement Tuesday night only that “there have been reports of shooting at the Lekki Toll Plaza following the 24-hour curfew imposed on Lagos.”
“The state government has ordered an investigation into the incident,” he said.
Video shown on Nigeria’s Channels Television appeared to capture audio of live rounds being fired at the scene.
“While we continue to investigate the killings, Amnesty International wishes to remind the authorities that under international law, security forces may only resort to the use of lethal force when strictly unavoidable to protect against imminent threat of death or serious injury,” Amnesty tweeted.
The development came just hours after Lagos state Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu warned on Twitter that the growing protests against police brutality in Nigeria had “degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society.”
A police statement also had warned that security forces would now “exercise the full powers of the law to prevent any further attempt on lives and property of citizens.”
The reports of fatal shootings in Lekki come after two chaotic weeks of mounting protests leading to more widespread social unrest. On Tuesday, authorities said nearly 2,000 inmates had broken out of jail after crowds attacked two correctional facilities a day earlier.
The Inspector-General of Police said it was deploying anti-riot police across Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous nation, and ordered forces to strengthen security around correctional facilities.
The governor of Lagos state said the new curfew would cover the entire city of some 14 million people and surrounding areas. The announcement came after a police station was burned down in the city and two people were shot dead by police.
“Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella of these protests to unleash mayhem on our state,” the governor said.
Lagos has been the epicenter of the protests, with demonstrators at times blocking access to the airport and barricading roads leading to the country’s main ports.
A curfew also went into effect in Benin City after a pair of attacks on correctional facilities that left 1,993 inmates missing. Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Manga said large, armed crowds had attacked the two prisons, subduing the guards on duty. It was unclear what the prisons’ exact populations had been before the attack.
“Most of the inmates held at the centers are convicted criminals serving terms for various criminal offenses, awaiting execution or standing trial for violent crimes,” he said in a statement.

The opposition campaign has been setting the stage for an election dispute, with Fofana accusing the government of \"large-scale fraud\" in counting ballots from the hotly contested October 18 poll.

Meanwhile in a seeming response to Diallo's self-proclaimed win, security forces dressed in riot gear surrounded his house in the capital. He tweeted that he was trapped inside.
- 'Irresponsible and dangerous' -
Security forces killed dozens of people in protests against a Conde third term, which began in October last year--.
Although polling day was mostly calm, Diallo's self-proclaimed election victory has ratched up tensions in the former French colony of some 13 million people.
The government insists the vote was fair and that only the official electoral authority can declare the results.
Conde's RPG party also called Diallo's move \"irresponsible and dangerous\" on Monday.
The international community is concerned too. The United Nations, African Union, and the 15-nation ECOWAS called the premature declaration of results \"regrettable\", in a joint statement on Monday.
\"This state of affairs is not conducive to preserving calm,\" the statement said.
