Multiple people were wounded Wednesday when an explosive device hit an international ceremony commemorating the end of World War I.

The event was being held at a cemetery in the Saudi city of Jeddah, according to French government officials.

Several countries had representatives at the ceremony, held at a cemetery for dead non-Muslims, the officials from the French Foreign Ministry said.

The identities of the victims were unclear.

Saudi state television broadcast from outside the cemetery and acknowledged that an attack involving an explosive device took place.

However it stressed that things were under control and the security situation was now \"stable.\"

The report said an official statement about the cause and casualty details was upcoming.

The stabbing was carried out by a Saudi man, who was arrested. His motives remain unclear.

France has suffered two deadly attacks by foreign-born Muslims in the past month alone.

A teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded outside Paris for showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to his class for a debate on free expression. Three people were later killed in a church in the southern city of Nice.

The depictions of the prophet sparked protests, leading to calls for boycotts of French products among some Muslims in the Middle East and South Asia.

France has urged its citizens in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim-majority countries to be \"on maximum alert\" amid the heightened tensions.

Wednesday marks the 102nd anniversary of the armistice ending World War I and is commemorated in several European countries.

The French officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, condemned the attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion and Saudi officials have not commented on the attack.

BY FORTUNE MBELE FC PLATINUM coach Hendrikus Pieter de Jongh said he did not have information on the Mozambique giants Costa do Sol but is aware football in that country has made great strides of late. The Zimbabwe champions have been drawn against Costa do Sol in the preliminary round of the Caf Champions League with the first leg to be played between November 27-29 in Mozambique. The second leg will be played in Zimbabwe a week later. De Jongh yesterday said he would carry out research on Costa do Sol, adding that the match would be tough. “It’s a tricky draw because football in Mozambique has made big strides in the last five years. They are professional and have big financial potential. But the advantage is that we start away,” De Jongh said. He added: “At the moment I have no information about the club. Today I start with research on the internet and former head coach national team of Mozambique Abel Xavier is good friend of mine since the time I was head coach of national team of Swaziland.” The Dutchman said since FC Platinum started group training there had been vast improvement in his camp and the players were raring to go. “Starting away is a big advantage as we have to grind a good result there, say a draw and score a goal. We are in week five now and compared to week two we have improved. We are on the right track, good shape and condition and big improvement technically and tactically,” De Jongh said.

By SHAME MAKOSHORI DUBAI-HEADQUARTERED airline, Emirates said on Monday it had reviewed fares on the Dubai-Lusaka-Harare route as part of efforts to recapture a market that had been grounded by COVID-19-induced lockdowns. The airline became one of the first major carriers to reintroduce frequencies into Harare last month, following six months of a blanket stoppage enforced by governments’ worldwide lockdowns to contain the spread of COVID-19. The only international airline connecting Harare to the rest of the world through its Dubai hub, Emirates kicked off with only two weekly frequencies, instead of its usual seven weekly flights. But on November 6, the airline scaled up its flights to three times a week after more governments lifted most lockdown restrictions to rebuild economies. Emirates said its expanded schedule would offer better connectivity for travellers in Zimbabwe and Zambia to Emirates’ extensive network that connects passengers to about 100 destinations. Emirates said it had introduced special fares on the route. “Emirates is giving travellers from Zimbabwe the opportunity to fly better to Dubai with a special offer for business class and economy class passengers,” the airline said in a statement. “Travellers from Zimbabwe planning a trip to Dubai can enjoy special fares on travel, in addition to excess baggage. Return fares in economy class starting from US$500 will include an additional piece of baggage and business class fares starting from US$2 215 will include an additional piece of baggage. Fares and extra baggage will help travellers from Harare make the best of their Dubai holiday so they can shop and pack, stress free,” the statement noted. This week’s developments dovetailed with Zimbabwe’s strategy to rebuild its multi-million-dollar tourism industry, which had been grounded by the closure of hotels and other facilities since March. Last month, government said tourist resorts could return to business, but they would operate under guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation to manage the spread of the disease. Like many economies worldwide, the stoppage of domestic and international flights dealt a huge blow to the sector, which lost $1 billion in potential revenue as result of lockdowns. Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe president Clive Chinwada recently said the sector was facing its greatest threat in history after operators ran into serious financial dire straits due to a slowdown in arrivals. The Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe has estimated that the industry will decline by up to 97% this year as a result of losses stemming out of the pandemic. It said recovery of the industry would hinge on how the domestic tourism sector will respond in the aftermath of the pandemic. “(We have lost) in excess of $1 billion when you aggregate the contribution of our industry to national gross domestic product,” Chinwada said. “If you talk to the major poultry farmers, you will understand they have struggled for demand in the past five months because fast food outlets, restaurants and hote

Millions of children, especially in Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, are at risk of not being vaccinated against polio and measles because of the coronavirus, UNICEF and the World Health Organization have alerted.

\"It is essential to address the global Covid-19 pandemic. However, other deadly diseases, such as polio and measles, also threaten the lives of millions of children in some of the poorest parts of the world,\" UNICEF and the WHO said in a joint statement issued Wednesday in Abuja.

According to the two organizations, there has been \"a global resurgence of measles with epidemics under way in all regions of the world in recent years.

Gaps in immunization coverage have been further exacerbated in 2020 by Covid-19, they added and called for \"urgent action\" by global donors and policymakers.

The situation in Nigeria, and its nearly 200 million people, is worrying. Although the country was declared free of wild polio in August 2020, it \"remains at risk of outbreaks of polio and measles due to a small improvement in immunization coverage,\" according to the statement.

Only 54 percent of children in Nigeria, for example, have received the first dose of measles vaccine, according to 2018 data.

On Monday, Nigerian authorities announced a sudden spike in cases and deaths from yellow fever, a deadly but vaccinated disease, in two southern regions.

In the neighboring Benue region, at least 17 people have died in recent days from an unknown disease, local media reported Wednesday.

The country has so far been relatively spared by the coronavirus pandemic, which has officially killed 1,154 people out of more than 64,000 registered cases. But the number of tests is largely insufficient.

However, other deadly diseases, such as polio and measles, also threaten the lives of millions of children in some of the poorest parts of the world,\" UNICEF and the WHO said in a joint statement issued Wednesday in Abuja. \n\nAccording to the two organizations, there has been \"a global resurgence of measles with epidemics under way in all regions of the world in recent years. \n\nGaps in immunization coverage have been further exacerbated in 2020 by Covid-19, they added and called for \"urgent action\" by global donors and policymakers. \n\nThe situation in Nigeria, and its nearly 200 million people, is worrying. Although the country was declared free of wild polio in August 2020, it \"remains at risk of outbreaks of polio and measles due to a small improvement in immunization coverage,\" according to the statement. \n\nOnly 54 percent of children in Nigeria, for example, have received the first dose of measles vaccine, according to 2018 data. \n\nOn Monday, Nigerian authorities announced a sudden spike in cases and deaths from yellow fever, a deadly but vaccinated disease, in two southern regions. \n\nIn the neighboring Benue region, at least 17 people have died in recent days from an unknown disease, local media reported Wednesday. \n\nThe country has so far been relatively spared by the coronavirus pandemic, which has officially killed 1,154 people out of more than 64,000 registered cases.
