Uganda is experiencing a shortage of healthcare professionals and many of its hospitals are understaffed. The health minister says there's as little as two doctors to every 10,000 people.
In May, Burundi held a presidential election which was won by Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy - Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party.
Ndayishimiye was hurriedly sworn in after the untimely death of president Pierre Nkurunziza in June.
Rights violations continue
The Council encouraged donor countries which had suspended aid to Burundi to continue dialogue towards resumption of development assistance.
A report by a UN watchdog in September said human rights violations were still being committed in Burundi, including sexual violence and murder.
The country was plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Ndayishimiye’s predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a controversial third term, which he ultimately won in July 2015.
His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.
Hundreds of people were killed and over 300,000 fled to neighboring countries.
BY HENRY MHARA TINO Kadewere’s stock continues to skyrocket in France with his former coach at Le Havre envisaging an even brighter future for the Warriors star man. So popular has Kadewere become at Olympique Lyonnais that the French giants have put his jersey on auction to raise funds for charity. The striker joined the Ligue 1 side at the beginning of the year. Four goals and two assists in the 12 games that he has featured this season has justified the reported €12 million that the French giants forked out to prise away the former Harare City man. His former coach at Le Havre, Oswald Tachot was not surprised that Kadewere had hit the road running in his career in the French top league. “He is a very co-ordinated boy who has a great first touch of the ball,” Tachot said. “I found his talent very comprehensive. He was able to create chances, and is a good finisher. When he arrived, he was not very strong physically, but he has greatly improved.” Kadewere’s affable character has helped him acclimatise to his new environment. “He was very smiling, open and always in a good mood. He immediately integrated well by learning French and by bringing his wife and son to France. He was grateful for the club for signing him. He is a fine boy and he lacked power when he arrived. But he made sure to use the other attributes that he has. He is clever with both feet.” The former Harare City player joined a star-studded Lyon squad and is competing for a starting place with superstars such as former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay, former Villareal striker Toko Ekambi and France international Moussa Dembele. Few gave him the chance to command a first team jersey ahead of some of the accomplished forwards the game has seen, but Kadewere has started eight of the 13 league matches that the team he played. He is the club’s third top goalscorer behind Ekambi and Depay. “He somehow managed to integrate in a team which has just come out of a semi-final of the Champions League and which has not sold its best offensive players. Despite everything, he manages to have playing time and to be efficient. He must take advantage of his current good period to get more confidence and so that others have confidence in him as well. Because when you arrive at OL from Ligue 2, the players don’t necessarily take you as a direct competitor. Finally, he has scored some very important goals,” Tachot said in an interview with Eurosport. Kadewere started in Lyon’s 3-1 win away to FC Metz on Sunday and was replaced by Dembele just after the half hour mark as the side moved third on the log, two points behind Paris Saint Germain. The 24-year-old will this weekend be rubbing shoulders with the PSG superstars including Neymar Jnr, Mbappé and Di María when Lyon visit Parc des Princes on Sunday. lFollow Henry on Twitter @henrymhara

DISGRUNTLED Midlands State University (MSU) journalism students have written to the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (Zimche) and government demanding reinstatement of their programme or else they would challenge the decision in court. BY MOSES MATENGA The war between the university, Zimche and the affected students has been raging for over a month after the withdrawal of the media degree programme and the masters in media and society studies at the university without consulting lecturers and other stakeholders. Students and other involved parties suspect that the move was political. In a letter addressed to the Zimche chief executive Kuzvinetsa Dzvimbo, the students represented by lawyers from Mataka Legal Practice said: “Needless to say, you simply advised Midlands State University that it was uncanny to have such a degree. With all due respect, such reasoning is baseless, unfounded and it ought to be reversed by reinstating the degree. Could you please reverse your decision and reinstate our client’s degree, failing which we have instructions to approach the courts of law for an appropriate remedy and all the legal costs shall be on your account.” It was not clear whether Zimche had responded to the students’ demand by yesterday. l Follow Moses on Twitter @mmatenga

NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (NUST) students last week held an online demonstration against failure by the university to release transcripts and other administrative concerns. BY PRAISEMORE SITHOLE On Friday, students were forced to stage an online demonstration after realising that their plans for in person protest would be quashed by security details at the campus clad in civilian clothes. In an interview yesterday, the student representative council (SRC) information secretary Muziwenkosi Moyo said the failure by the institution to issue graduate transcripts triggered the demo. “These graduates need transcripts and it’s a basic thing that should be done to enable them to look for jobs. “The NUST online registration system has been down for about five months, and students cannot access it to re-register,” Moyo said. “We cannot have a whole NUST failing to have something working, such basic things as online registration of students. “We are already beginning to question what our fees money is used for. Failure to offer services is disrespectful because we are paying fees,” he said. Moyo also alleged that there were students who were not attending lectures for almost 11 months. “This stream last saw a book in December 2019 and l don’t think that such a scenario has happened at any institute. “The affected students were enrolled in March 2019 and no communication has been sent to them on the way forward,” he said. Moyo added: “There is also poor communication, for example, fees were hiked at a time students had already registered. “No formal communication is sent. There is no proper orientation of students and as a result some new students threatened to drop out as they now regret enrolling at NUST.” The university director of communication and marketing Thabani Mpofu when contacted for comment said questions should be sent through his email. “Send the questions on my email and I will respond to them,” Mpofu said. He had not responded by the time of going to print.
[The Conversation Africa] In East Africa, there are concerns over widespread petty corruption in some of the countries' health and medical services. This makes access to them conditional on who you know or who you can pay, to the detriment of everyone else who doesn't have the money or connections.
ZINARA chief executive officer Nkosinathi Ncube was yesterday arraigned before Harare magistrate Trynos Wutawashe on allegations of victimising and transferring four subordinates who had been interviewed by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) over graft in the parastatal. BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA Ncube was released on $10 000 bail and ordered to report once every week at Highlands Police Station, as well as to desist from interfering with witnesses. Magistrate Wutawashe then rapped the anti-corruption guidance in the country saying it allowed accused persons to continue working at the organisations where they allegedly committed crimes. 'I am disappointed that the same people who are arrested for committing corrupt activities continue going to work, victimising state witnesses and no disciplinary action is taken against them,' Wutawashe said. 'This is a serious anomaly on how corruption cases are being dealt with. If people are serious about fighting corruption, why is it that someone who was investigated for an offence in October is still formally employed at that same organisation yet were are now in December? This rot must be dealt with, “he said. Ncube allegedly connived with two other Zinara senior officials, who are on bail for obstructing and defeating the course of justice by transferring employees who had co-operated with Zacc on investigating the organisation. Adam Zvandasara, the finance director and Gilfern Moyo, the human resources administration director, were last week freed on $10 000 bail each. Ncube, who is represented by Oscar Tafadzwa Gasva of Mbano, Gasva and Partners, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Wutawashe. The State, led by prosecutor Teddy Kamuriwo alleges that between October 7 and 26, 2020, Ncube transferred Jeremiah Singende, Munyaradzi Tongowona, Tonderai Marange and Nathaniel Straus Tembo to toll gates from head office while Zacc was still carrying out investigations on alleged corruption within Zinara. It is also alleged that Ncube, in connivance with Zvandasara and Moyo, interrogated the complainant Tembo on what he had told Zacc during the interviews. Ncube was remanded to December 17, 2020.

A HIGH school student on Sunday launched a record label to promote budding artistes without compromising educational opportunities. BY SHARON SIBINDI Nkosenhle “King Royal” Mlibazi, an A level student at Milton High School in Bulawayo, told NewsDay Life & Style that his No Reason record label will give young people and budding artistes a chance to explore and develop in the arts sector. “After noticing that a lot of young stars struggle with putting their art out in the world, we decided to create a label so we can have young people rallying under us or with us because as No Reason we believe in teamwork and together we can,” he said. “The name No Reason was composed through the catch phrase “Number of Reason why we Entertain” it’s shortcut being No Reason Entertainment.” Mlibazi said he was inspired by a number of young artistes that were trying to make it in the industry. “Most budding artistes are just happy to record a song and share it with friends. So I got an idea of having a music stable that will harness such potential, provide mentorship as well as link up with music stations as a brand not as an individual artiste,” he said. “The timing is perfect because for us we are officially celebrating our first anniversary. Well as an Upper Six student this means I am inspiring a new breed of artistes that are able to balance art and school. As the year ends, we will have established our existence to the arts fraternity .” Mlibazi said as young artistes they were humbled by the support they received from established artistes. “Initially we wanted to hold a small celebration, but senior artistes encouraged us to have a proper online gig to launch the brand. We are also grateful to the artistic directors of Khaya Arts, Langelitsha Arts and Victory Siyanqoba to name a few for supporting our initiative and helping to curate the event to meet best artistic standards,” he said. “I also appreciate the support from my father Nkosie Mlibazi the director of Langelitsha Arts for believing in my vision. A fully-functioning studio also gave us the chance for more aspiring musicians to record at a reasonable cost and, therefore, we welcome any potential partner.” The launch, live streamed on CNC Productions Facebook page, saw thrilling performances from artistes and notable performances from solo jazz artiste Millagre, Black Sheep and up-and-coming Kwaito star Langelitsha Arts, as well as the Oxide Kids.
