Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas says six photos of African American victims found hanging from a tree was a misguided attempt to start a community conversation about race. The photos were found last Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee's Riverside Park. The laminated photos included Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Botham Jean, Ahmaud Arbery, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin.Four of the six died at the hands of police.

The two others, Arbery and Martin, were killed by people who took the law into their own hands. The photos were hung with nooses and taken down by members of the Original Black Panthers.Lucas said his department opened an investigation because it has jurisdiction at Milwaukee County parks. The Original Black Panthers called the photos racist.Lucas said deputies made contact with a 53-year-old African American man who said he hung the photos in the park. The man said he also hung similar photos at Atwater Park in Shorewood but when deputies went to look for them, they could not be found.Lucas said the man told investigators he hung the photos to invoke a dialogue in the community about how Black men and women are dying in America.

\"No matter how well-intended the individual was in placing the placards in public as an attempt to begin a dialogue, the takeaway from this, for all of us, is that coming to grips with our country’s recent history and dark past requires an ability to spark meaningful dialogue in a more thoughtful and sensitive manner,\" Lucas said.

On Thursday, the mother to singer-songwriters Beyoncé Knowles Carter and Solange, along with Mothers of the Movement and a host of Black women in Hollywood, sent an open letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

As members of the Black community, we are hurting, we are angry, and we are anguished by the repeated assaults on Black bodies, brought to light once again by the recent murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of what has for too long been incorrectly coined ‘justice,’” the letter reads.

The letter puts emphasis on the need for Black and Brown voters to be able to safely exercise their civic duty and right in order to make the necessary changes to fight systemic racism.

Written in partnership with And Still I Vote, a campaign by The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, it also sites ongoing voter suppression in places like Kentucky and Georgia, and the rise in COVID-19 infections following the Wisconsin elections, as reasons why the Senate should stop stalling on the bill and pass the legislation ASAP.

“MN Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence,” “Justice Squad,” and other groupings of families and anti-police violence organizations around the country have come together under the umbrella of “Take A Knee Nation.”

They are responding to Floyd’s call by inviting families who have experienced loss as a result of police violence to join a National Mothers March and weekend in Minneapolis/St.

The weekend will start on Saturday in Minneapolis with a series of workshops for the families and spouses and relatives who have lost a loved one to police violence.

Following the workshops will be a convening of the families who have lost loved ones to police violence, giving them the opportunity to support one another in their advocacy for justice for their loved ones, share one another’s grief, organize and unite as one voice.

Take A Knee Nation is well known for bringing the impact of police violence on families to the attention of the nation during its 2018 Take A Knee Conference on Super Bowl weekend in Minneapolis.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Hundreds of people rallied at Kentucky’s capitol on Thursday to urge action in the investigation of three officers in the fatal police shooting of a Black woman, Breonna Taylor, at her Louisville home.

The 26-year-old woman was shot eight times by officers who burst into her Louisville home March 13, using a no-knock warrant during a narcotics investigation.

Louisville police have fired one of the three detectives who served the warrant at Taylor’s home.

Taylor was killed “in the sanctity of her own home,” said civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, who is representing Taylor’s family.

The rally was organized in the state capitol to call attention to Daniel Cameron, Kentucky’s first Black attorney general, whose office is reviewing the police investigation of the three officers.

New York Police Department officials are investigating the use of a taser on a 14-year-old boy who says cops accused him of throwing objects at them by mistake, according to the New York Daily News.

‘”

The teen said he was with a cousin and two friends in the Crotona section of the borough around 9:10 p.m., trying to make it home before his curfew 20 minutes later, when he saw an incident involving police.

NYPD policy is to notify a parent or guardian when a juvenile is arrested, but a nurse from the hospital was the one that reportedly called Roberts’ mother, Winter Bose.

The NYPD told the Daily News that other summonses had been issued to individuals who were accused of throwing objects at police from above.

But Roberts’ family filed a $3 million notice of claim -- which precedes a lawsuit -- insisting the teen had nothing to do with that incident.

DALLAS — To encourage people to wear face coverings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Mayor Eric Johnson temporarily changed his official portrait Monday to a new photo of him in a mask.

The new temporary portrait, which hangs in Dallas City Hall and at Love Field, is meant to model the responsible behavior for others.

Officials   and City of Dallas Health and Healthcare Access Czar Dr. Kelvin Baggett have also strongly encouraged people to wear masks in public and to practice social distancing as the Texas economy has been reopening in phases.

Dallas County has recorded a total of 14,537 COVID-19 cases and 285 deaths.

About 55% of the cases in Dallas County so far have been city of Dallas residents.

In a powerful first-person address, Tyler Perry opened up about his thoughts on racial injustice, the killing of George Floyd and his vision for the future of America when it comes to his 5-year-old son, Aman.

I felt for him and his family, I felt for all of us as black people, I felt for my five-year-old son,” Perry tells People.

“I know that as his father, a Black man in America, it is my duty to prepare him for the harsh reality that awaits him outside of the watchful eyes of his loving parents,” he writes.

Voicing his compelling words aloud, Perry’s essay lasts for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the reported length of time former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd’s neck as he died.

A descendant of President Thomas Jefferson wants his statues taken down as monuments to problematic figures have been removed, defaced and vandalized in recent weeks.

In May, George Floyd’s death led to nationwide protests over police brutality and renewed efforts to take down statues honoring Confederate idols.

LaNier wrote in an op-ed for Newsweek that there should be no statues in honor of those who have hurt their ancestors “beyond repair” and that these public tributes honored a “slave master, a murderer, or a white supremacist.”

LaNier expressed that statues in dedication to Jefferson, Robert E. Lee, and Christopher Columbus were merely “symbols of hate, racism and slavery” and to honor these individuals and others was to validate their horrific actions.

LaNier believes museums are an appropriate place for the statues in order to provide historical context without the need for a public shrine.

Memphis point guard Ja Morant is a rookie that before the NBA season was abruptly halted in March was considered among the league’s brightest new stars.

As reported by ESPN, The Memphis Grizzlies star tweeted – the deleted – and anti-police post that replaced his name on the back of his jersey with ‘F***k 12.’

NBA players are expected to resume their season on July 30.

To address player concerns about using their platform as a vehicle for social justice, NBA Player Association president Chris Paul told the Undefeated that NBA players may be able to wear social justice or charity messages on the back of their jerseys instead of their names.

But three months after plainclothes detectives serving a warrant busted into her Louisville, Kentucky, apartment and shot the 26-year-old Black woman to death, only one of the three officers who opened fire has lost his job.

Attorney General Daniel Cameron, whose office is reviewing the investigation by Louisville police, has declined to offer a timetable.

“I think the game changer is the federal intervention here,” he said, adding he’s never in two decades seen a racially charged police shooting in Louisville get so much attention from the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has said state laws and the city’s collective bargaining agreement with police require a process to be followed before an officer can be fired.

Integral to any policy discussion is a fully funded public sector, including schools and universities that are particularly well-poised to address everything from the achievement gap to unconscious bias throughout the state.

The governor and Legislature are banking on the federal government to come to the rescue; in May, the House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act that earmarks $1 trillion for the states, which would help fill California’s projected $54 billion budget deficit, enabling us to maintain schools, health care, transportation and other vital public services.

Specifically, our state leaders have the power to increase taxes on the states’ corporations and millionaires and billionaires, which would avoid cuts altogether.

Another option would be to impose a 1% tax on the wealth – for instance, on dividends and stock transfers – of millionaires and a 1.5% tax on the wealth of billionaires, which would generate $18 billion annually.

A third option would be to close corporate loopholes and enact an “excess” profits tax on corporations that are raking in more money than usual during the pandemic, largely due to how the lockdown has increased the value of their services, as is the case especially for tech companies.

Brett Hankison, one of the Louisville police officers responsible for killing Breonna Taylor in her home has been fired, Louisville Metro Police announced on Tuesday (June 23).

Taylor, 26, was shot by officers at her apartment on March 13 as they entered to serve a no-knock warrant.

Taylor was shot eight times in the ensuing gunfire from officers.

Hankison is accused by the department's interim chief, Robert Schroeder, of \"blindly\" firing 10 rounds into Taylor's apartment, creating a substantial danger of death and serious injury, according to USA Today.

Schroeder notes that Hankison may appeal the decision to the Police Merit Board in writing within 10 days.
