A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Dr Rashid Aman, the Chief Administrative Secretary for Health, said during his daily update in Nairobi that 50 of the new cases are male and 22 female.

The new cases are spread in eight counties, with the capital Nairobi taking more than half (39), Busia (13), Mombasa (eight), Kajiado (four), Migori (three), Kiambu and Garissa (two each) and Kisumu (one).

Dr Aman Tueswday admitted the delay in remitting results is because of the temporary shortage of the testing materials.

“We have a backlog of samples that we need to test but we will clear them with time,” Dr Aman said.

“We are running low on materials and we will have to scale down on the number of tests that we are doing so that we don’t completely stop testing as we wait for the consignment that we have ordered,” he said

Despite the delay, Dr Aman assured Kenyans their samples were well kept.

JACKSON, Miss. –  On May 19th, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported its first pediatric flu death of 2020.

“We’ve recently been focused on COVID-19, but this sadly reminds us that an annual flu vaccine is important for anyone ages 6 months and older,” said MSDH State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs.

The case was in a child in Central Mississippi who tested positive for COVID-19 and has been discharged from the hospital.

MIS-C is an inflammatory illness found in children under 18 years of age and may be associated with previous COVID-19 infection.

Uganda Revenue Authority has in the past two years charged, Kenyan Chicken meat export a 25 percent of taxes - 18 percent of VAT, 1 percent of Railway development levy and 6 percent Withholding Tax.

Our propose is to the government is to impose tax or Ugandan government to waive 19 percent tax on VAT and Railway Development Levy ,\" argued Monica Wanjiru, the President of Federation of Kenya Poultry Farmers (FKPF).

This means that the Uganda poultry products have a free access to the Kenyan market while the Kenyan products are hindered from access to Uganda through Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) or imposition of domestic taxes (VAT, withholding taxes or railway levies).

Uganda retaliated by banning importation of Kenyan Poultry products into their country.

In a technical paper presented to Department of Livestock in December 2019, and developed jointly by Livestock stakeholders, it proved that Hudani Manji Holdings (Yokuku), the Ugandan poultry producer that has been exporting product to Kenya is effectively dumping products into the Kenyan market.

AS several countries ease into relaxing the strict measures taken to contain the dreaded novel coronavirus outbreak, top officials of the World Health Organization (WHO) are urging extreme caution, warning that the volatility of the virus could result in a second peak, long before a second wave, causing further devastation.

“We congratulate countries who have managed to contain and suppress the disease transmission; when we speak about a second wave classically what we often mean is that there will be a first wave and the disease by itself effectively goes to a very low level and then it curves a number of months later.

We cannot make assumptions that just because the disease is on the way down now it's gonna keep going down and then we are going to get a number of months to get ready for a second wave,” the WHO's emergencies chief Dr Michael Ryan told a press briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday.

We got a second peak, not necessarily a second wave, and therefore I think right now countries in Europe, countries in North America, many other countries around the world and South East Asia have to continue to put in place the public health and social measures, the surveillance measures, the testing measures and a comprehensive strategy to ensure that we continue on a downward trajectory and that we don't have an immediate second peak,” he said.

In the meantime, WHO Head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said stringency in social and public health measures remain paramount if countries are to overtake the virus and remain in the lead.

Speaking at a briefing on Wednesday, WHO emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan warned against trying to predict when the virus would disappear.

The United Nations health agency has been releasing a raft of guidelines as to how operations should resume as lockdown measures continue to be eased across different countries globally.

Some of these guidelines include public health and social measures in schools and the workplace.

Since Covid-19, an infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs, was declared a pandemic on March 11, countries have implemented a raft of measures like restriction on movement, partial closure or closure of schools and businesses, quarantine in specific geographic areas, and international travel restrictions.

The international health agency advises that protective measures, including physical distancing, handwashing, respiratory etiquette, and, potentially, thermal monitoring, have to be established.

Principals, teachers, and parents plan to picket in Cape Town on Thursday against the \"premature reopening of schools\" which they say is compromising the safety of pupils during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A group of high and primary school principals wrote a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Cabinet a week ago, appealing to the government to review its decision to reopen schools.

The letter - compiled by principals from Heathfield High, Steenberg High, Floreat High and Athlone High - said \"the decision to reopen primary and high schools on 1 June was the wrong one.

\"The national minister of basic education, in consultation with the National Coronavirus Command Council, announced that schools would open on 1 June 2020 for grades 7 and 12, to be followed by the gradual phasing in of more grades on 6 July 2020 and 3 August 2020.

\"The WCED will always strive to protect every child in its care, similarly, every parent has the right to send his/her child to school to receive an education,\" said Casey.
