Scotland, Australia win rugby 7s gold; TT teams 6th - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

THE Trinidad and Tobago men's and women's rugby 7s teams ended the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games winless as both teams finished in sixth position on Tuesday at the Shaw Park Field, Tobago.

TT men were beaten by Caribbean counterparts Jamaica 12-5 in the 5th/6th playoff. Jamaica had tries from Brandon Gordon and Anthony Pencle whereas Aaron Stanley recorded the lone try for TT.

In the earlier session, in the last Group A match, TT men suffered a heavy 43-5 defeat to eventual champions Scotland. Ross Burnie and Hugo Alderson led the scoring with two tries apiece whilst Stanley was the lone scorer for the home team.

Scotland later edged Fiji 25-20 in an entertaining final. South Africa crushed Canada 52-0 to claim the bronze medal.

In the women`s event, TT also finished sixth after losing to Wales 50-0 in the 5th/6th match. In their last group match, which was played in the morning session, the host team were whipped 66-0 by the same opponents.

Australia were ruthless in the final to claim the gold medal courtesy a 50-0 drubbing against Canada. Fiji secured the bronze medal with a 22-10 win over Kenya.

In the women's beach volleyball at the Black Rock Beach Facility, TT's L'fe Roberts and Meeka Lewis finished in 10th position following a 2-0 (22:20, 21:14) defeat to Rwanda's pair of Claire and Hygette Uwase.

The local men's pair of Jahreef Miguel and Jerome Morrisson were scheduled to face Gambia`s Sanusi Jawara and Janneh Semega in the 11th/12th position match.

At the Buccoo Beach Facility, TT`s triathlon team of James Catagne- Hay and Jenae-marie Price finished the mixed team relay super sprint distance in 17th position with a time of 47 minutes and 29 seconds. Australia`s duo of Jack Latham and Aspen Anderson were the gold medallists in a time of 40:58. Capturing the silver medals were Scottish pair of Alex Robin and Jessica Heeps clocking 41:23 and Jersey`s team of Luke Holmes and Siena Stephens were third in 41:37.
