Record cases
Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.
The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.
Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Ghana's incumbent president Nana Addo Akufo-Addo has been declared winner of the country's presidential election.
In an announcement on Wednesday, the country's election commission said Akufo Ado had polled 51.59 per cent as against main opposition candidate John Mahama's 47.36 per cent of votes.
\"At the end of the polls, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, obtained 6,730,413 votes, being 51.595% of the total valid votes cast.\" Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the electoral commission announced before an audience made up of observersm political party officials and journalists.
Last week both leading candidates had signed a solemn undertaking to resolve any electoral disputes through legal channels and called on their supporters to refrain from violence.
Earlier on Wednesday the police said five people had been killed from electoral violence since Monday. The Ghanaian Police Service said it recorded over 60 incidents.
\"Twenty-one of the incidents are true cases of electoral violence, six of which involve gunshots resulting in the death of five,\" it said.

ZIMBABWE’S poultry sector registered a 42% growth during the third quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, after producing an average of 19,5 million day-old-chicks (DoCs), according to Zimbabwe Poultry Association (ZPA) chairman Solomon Zawe. BY MTHANDAZO NYONI However, a quarterly average production of 6,5 million chicks per month was insufficient to meet resurgent demand after government lifted some COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, allowing improved movement of people and resumption of business operations. “The critical shortage of day-old-chicks experienced during (third quarter) Q3 in 2020 due to destocking of breeding stock at the height of the lockdown restrictions have been exacerbated by export restrictions from Zambia and Malawi,” Zawe said in the sector’s latest industry newsletter. “The importion of duty-free hatching eggs from outside the Sadc region has recently been approved by the government but it is expected that the costs of production of DoCs will increase. “High demand for DoCs for the festive season has resulted in shortages and a spike in the prices of DoCs.” On imports, Zawe said statistics showed limited imports of poultry products. “However, the increase in cost of DoCs may incentivise illegal imports of poultry meat towards the festive season,” he said. Zawe said production of broiler DoCs had ranged from lows of 4,1 million in April and May, to 7,3 million in September. During the period under review, chick prices continued to increase. The price increased to $6,651 per 100 chicks in September. Zawe said in June, the number of birds processed by large-scale abattoirs had plummeted to 0,69 million, yielding 1,150 metric tonnes (mt) of meat in June. In the third quarter, an average of 1,25 million birds were processed, producing 2,019mt per month. The ZPA boss said smallholder production averaged 8,304mt per month in the third quarter, being increases of 57% and 50% compared with the second quarter of this year and third quarter last year, respectively. “However, it is believed that many birds destined for large-scale processing were being marketed directly to the public as live birds,” he said. Zawe said total meat produced in the third quarter was estimated to be 10,323mt per month, being an increase of 17% compared with prior year figures. Total meat production for the period January to September was estimated at 8,757mt per month, a decrease of 13% compared with 2019. Third quarter prices increased between 77% and 85% over the second quarter. Zawe said broiler growing and in-production breeding stocks had shown strong recovery following the low attained in March this year of 592 539 birds, increasing by 26% to 746 934 birds in September.

ZIMBABWE’s year-on-year inflation rate dropped to 401,66% in November, from 471% the previous month, data released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) yesterday shows. BY FIDELITY MHLANGA This means prices, as measured by the all items consumer price index (CPI), increased by an average of 401,66% between November last year and November 2020. Data on pricing trends was collected between November 12 and 18, according to a statement by ZimStat. The agency did not state the reasons behind the slowdown. Year-on-year inflation reached a post-dollarisation zenith of 837,53% in July, much to the chagrin of authorities who then instituted a raft of measures to douse the flame. In August, inflation eased to 761,02% after one of the sources of growing inflation, the forex exchange parallel market was tamed when the central bank intensified a clampdown on mobile money agents and other digital money transfer platforms. Government also suspended trading on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange in June, accusing the bourse of fuelling inflation, before reopening it in August. However, there has been debate about the accuracy of inflation data. Government has been saying the inflation rate has been slowing down, while the cost of living has generally been increasing. Last month, ZimStat said the monthly cost of living rose by 4,4% to $18 750 in October, from $17 956,87 in September. So steep were price hikes during the period that in Matabeleland North, consumers required up to $20 679 for a family of five to pull through. There has been no let up on price hikes across the country since then. Normally an inflationary slide means that prices are stabilising. Escalating living expenses exert pressure on thousands of Zimbabweans who have been thrown out of jobs after an intensification of de-industrialisation in the past year. Over one million more Zimbabweans joined the jobless ranks this year after blanket firm shutdowns were effected by government to prevent contagion as the deadly COVID-19 pandemic tore through provinces. But even those formally employed will feel the heat. Very few workers currently earn over $14 500 because companies are struggling to stay afloat due to diminished demand precipitated by a gruelling economic crisis. The least paid civil servant earns about $14 500. Experts say millions of Zimbabweans living in rural areas will sink into abject poverty as steep rises in basic commodity prices erode their already over-stretched buying power following the prolonged economic crisis. “The TCPL (total consumption poverty line) for an average of five persons stood at $18 750,35 in October 2020,” ZimStat said in November. “This means that an average household required that much to purchase both food and non-food items for them not to be deemed poor. This represents an increase of 4,4% when compared to the September 2020 figure of $17 956,87.
