A. Benjamin Spencer is a nationally renowned civil procedure and federal courts expert and a current professor of law at the University of Virginia.
However, on July 1, he will make history and become the first African American to be the dean of any school at The College of William Mary, the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the country, after Harvard University.
He is currently the Justice Thurgood Marshall Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law.
His father, James R. Spencer, was the first African American chief judge in the 215-year history of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
