THE EDITOR: A full-page farewell message from Professor Brian Copeland, campus principal of UWI for six years, was published on Sunday.
Copeland proudly states, 'This campus is my home. I have been part of this institution for most of my life as a student, lecturer, administrator, researcher and inventor. I have seen it expand over many decades to the powerhouse it has become, the heart of intellectualism, the arts, the sciences, professional training at the highest level, and scholarship.'
An oversight to his legacy, however, is the elegant campus clock which overlooks the Alma Jordan courtyard, and which for almost ten years and continuing does not carry the correct time. In welcoming Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, his successor, I trust that intellectualism, the arts, sciences and scholarship will not be a justification for trivialising poor timekeeping.
Oxford University, Harvard and Toronto will likely deem UWI's timekeeping as Third World.
