In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

The people – not just Black people – but a huge swath of America’s people – are fed up with America’s racism, spurred and nurtured by white supremacy which has given White people the false belief that they can do whatever they want forever.
The brutal and cruel murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer ignited a spark of resentment and frustration among Black people, but it also opened the eyes of many White people and people of other racial and ethnic groups.
If the economy was in danger before, it is in even more danger now, because more businesses have been adversely affected because of being burned down as this nation vents its frustration and anger at the way police have been able to denigrate and disrespect people for literally generations.
America is falling because of this president’s racism, his lack of leadership, and his inability to show empathy with the people he is leading or respect for the constitution he swore to uphold and protect.
As Putin basks in the fall of America, those who have helped this nation’s demise should shudder as they realize that they brought this country to this place, a place from which it is not going to be able to rebound.

A Bill to have Ugandan savers access 20 per cent of their contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to see them through the economic hardships of the Covid-19 pandemic, has ignited heated parliamentary and public debate, and ended in court after opposition from the fund.
Mr Byarugaba's letter stirred up an uproar with proponents of the midterm access, saying that in citing dire negative economic consequences, NSSF was technically avoiding its natural responsibility, the purpose and cause on which it was formed and forgetting the justification of its existence which is to provide a social security safety net for its members whenever their social security is under threat.
Mr Rwakakamba and his organisation now want a court order directing NSSF \"to pay out at least 20 per cent to each of its members whose lives have been affected by the current Covid-19 pandemic; and declare various provisions of Section 19 of the NSSF Act unconstitutional especially those that impose restrictions on mid-term access by contributors contrary to the obligations as regards to the rights guaranteed under the international human rights instruments ratified by Uganda.\"
They contend that allowing members to access 20 per cent of their contributions will justify the purpose and relevance of the fund since it is a social security fund whose sole purpose is to help its members in such times when many have lost income, employment and source of livelihood due to the pandemic.

VENDORS, teachers and retailers are pinning their hopes on today’s budget presentation by Finance minister Mthuli Ncube to address key issues affecting their constituencies that have been hard hit by the economic crisis. BY MOSES MATENGA The economic crisis, coupled with the COVID-19-induced lockdown, has severely affected vendors, teachers and retailers, among others. Without government intervention, they said 2021 looked to be gloomier. Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers Association president Denford Mutashu said Ncube’s budget should focus on poverty eradication and be pro-production. “The minister should focus on poverty eradication, stimulate demand and come up with a budget that is pro-production,” he said. “Import substitution balanced with a robust export strategy will save the country’s precious foreign currency, consolidate economic gains and reduce inflation towards a single digit figure.” Mutashu said there was also expectation for scrapping of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority’s directive to businesses to pay value-added tax on rice backdated to 2017 “yet the then Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Patrick Chinamasa made a directive to the contrary”. Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou said: “We expect a budget that resonates with the Dakar Declaration of allocating more than 22% of total budget to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. “We, therefore, expect government investment in quality public education where teachers would be well paid, innovative and dynamic and contribute to a skills revolution in line with Agenda 2030. It is imperative to enhance government capacity to support teachers and create an enabling environment for effective learning and teaching in public schools.” Teachers have not been attending classes for weeks after declaring incapacitation and demanding a salary increase. “That budget must also resonate with Abuja Declaration of allocating 15% of total budget to the health sector and Maputo Declaration of allocating 10% of total budget to agriculture,” Zhou said. Vendors said the minister’s budget should be guided by the fact that most of the economic projects were being driven by the informal sector. “Our hope is that the minister in his statement tomorrow (today) will be guided by such statistics, as it is very much a fact that most of the economy resides in the informal sector,” Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation executive director Samuel Wadzai said. HAVANA, Cuba (CMC) — The Government of Cuba has thanked the Organization of Petroleum Exporting countries (OPEC) for supporting the economy of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island, even as the United States continues to tighten its restrictions against the island.
Cuba's ambassador to Austria, Loipa Sanchez, during a meeting with the director general of the OPEC Fund for International Development, Dr Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, director general of the OPEC Fund for International Development, reiterated the importance that cooperation with OPEC in key sectors of the national economy such as agriculture and water resources has had for Cuba.
Since 2002, when the first agreement was signed between Cuba and the OPEC Fund for International Development, the organisation has granted 15 government concessional loans for the implementation of projects in different provinces, aimed at upgrading irrigation systems, rehabilitating electrical networks and water and sewerage systems, seven of which are currently underway.
