TT umpire Ayanna McClean officiates at FIH World Cup - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

EUROPEAN-BASED Trinidad and Tobago's International Hockey Federation (FIH) umpire Ayanna McClean is among the umpires at the 14th edition of the FIH Hockey Women's World Cup, currently under way in Amstelveen, Netherlands as well as Terrassa, Spain.

This is McClean's second World Cup appointment with her first being at London in 2018. Her appointment comes on the heels of her being the first umpire in 25 years from the region to officiate at an Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan last year.

McClean is is set to officiate matches between teams in Pool C and Pool D in the preliminary and quarter final stages.

Among those teams are Argentina, Canada, Korea, Spain, Australia, Belgium, Japan and South Africa.

A statement issued by the TT Hockey Board on Friday said the Women's World Cup is the most anticipated event on the hockey calendar, second to the Olympic Games.

Regional teams that qualified for this event from the Pan American Cup, held in January, include the number two ranked team in the world Argentina, debutants Chile and Canada, who are returning after a 28-year absence.

Absent from this year's World Cup competition is the United States, after they failed to qualify in January 2022.

The regional teams will face off against other teams from across the globe including the host countries, Spain, and the Netherlands, who currently hold the World Cup title, as well as former champions Australia, and ten others.
