Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.

Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.

In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.

Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

Swollen feet

In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.

Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.

Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.

The Georgia attorney general on Monday appointed a black female prosecutor to oversee the case of Ahmaud Arbery, the 25-year-old African-American man who was shot dead by two white men while he was reportedly out jogging on February 23.

She will be overseeing the prosecution of Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34, who were charged with murder and aggravated assault after a video of them pursuing Arbery in a pick up truck and then shooting him dead in a Brunswick, Georgia street surfaced online last week.

'In order for justice to be carried out both effectively and appropriately in the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, it is imperative that the special prosecutor has no affiliation with the Southeast Georgia legal or law enforcement communities,' attorney Benjamin Crump said in a statement.

It was then handed to George E. Barnhill, district attorney for Georgia’s Waycross Judicial Circuit, who recused himself under pressure from Arbery’s mother amid claims Barnhill’s son used to work with Gregory McMichael in the Brunswick district attorney’s office.

In a letter to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr recusing himself from the case, Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill said that his own son and Gregory 'both helped with the previous prosecution of (Ahmaud) Arbery'.

The shooting of Renisha McBride, a 19-year-old African-American woman, occurred on November 2, 2013, in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, United States. Renisha McBride crashed her car at a street in Detroit, and then walked to a neighborhood in Dearborn Heights where she knocked on the door of a house. The homeowner, Theodore Wafer, shot McBride with a shotgun. Wafer contended that the shooting was accidental and that he thought his home was being broken into after he heard her banging on his door at 4:42 in the morning.[2]

The shooting prompted some to claim her death was a result of racial profiling.[3]

Wafer was convicted of second-degree murder on August 7, 2014,[4] and received a sentence of 17 to 32 years in prison.

On November 2, 2013, McBride crashed her car at Bramell and Majestic on the west side of Detroit. Police report that the 911 caller said a woman had been speeding down the street, struck a parked car, got out of the vehicle, and then left on foot. Police initially considered the incident a low priority, so no officers were immediately dispatched. Forty minutes later, another call was placed indicating that the driver had returned. EMS arrived on the scene, but McBride had again walked away from the scene and was not treated.[5] The owner of the parked car, who encountered McBride and called 911, told police that McBride was discombobulated and appeared to be in a confused state of not knowing where she was and not being able to give a phone number or anything.[6]

Shortly before 4:42 am, McBride was shot by homeowner Theodore Paul Wafer, 54, on the porch of his Dearborn Heights home, more than three hours after she crashed her car about a mile away.[7] [8] [9] Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy stated Wafer opened his front door and fired a shotgun blast through a screen door, hitting McBride in her face.[7]

It is unclear what McBride was doing during the three hours between the crash and the fatal shooting.[8] Her family, however, states that she was looking for help after becoming

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — A white woman is charged with assaulting an 11-year-old black girl, Skhylur Davis in what the girl’s lawyer calls a racially motivated attack.

Elizabeth Shirey accused Davis of stealing her mail on May 11, attorney Justin Bamberg said.

Skhylur told police that Shirey “attempted to grab the mail away from her and in the process, grabbed her by the arms and pulled them,” a report from the Aiken Department of Public Safety states.

When Shirey saw the address on the mail and realized it was not hers, she let Skhylur go and apologized, the girl told officers, according to the police report.

“After realizing that Skhylur had not done anything wrong, this woman proceeds to offer her cookies, as though that makes things better,” Bamberg said.

Among the questions: Did shooting suspect Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory, both white, get special treatment because the elder McMichael had been a longtime investigator at the Brunswick Circuit District Attorney’s office?

The father and son were questioned, and police called the district attorney’s office, where Gregory McMichael had worked for more than two decades, for legal advice.

Just days after Arbery’s killing, Glynn County Police Chief John Powell and three former high-ranking officers were indicted in what investigators described as a cover-up of an officer’s sexual relationship with an informant.

Bowling Green State University criminologist Philip Stinson said there is also a tendency to treat a crime scene differently if a current or former law enforcement officer is involved, as was the case with Gregory McMichael.

It could make it harder for prosecutors to bring a successful murder case, and easier for defense lawyers to argue that the crime scene is tainted by potential prosecutor misconduct that’s under investigation by Georgia authorities.

A security camera at 219 Satilla Drive is recording when Mr. Arbery enters the frame at around 1:04 p.m.

PM At 1:10 p.m. Travis and his father Gregory grab their guns, jump in a white truck, and leave the house to pursue Mr. Arbery.

We don’t have footage showing the next 3 minutes, but testimony Gregory McMichael gave police at the scene, and interviews by another witness, Roddy Bryan, indicate what happened.

This past week’s international civil disturbances, sparked by the ‘lynching’ of a Black man in Minneapolis,  took me back four decades to the killing/murder of Earnest Lacy by Milwaukee police officers.

Milwaukee, still reeling from several questionable killings by police—including the murder of Joel Acevedo a few short weeks ago by an off duty cop—leads the nation in seven negative social indicators and has been judged the worst city for African Americans to live in the country.

While the Minneapolis chief of police was quick to condemn his officers for violating Floyd’s human rights, Milwaukee had the misfortunate of having an avowed racist leading our police department in Chief Harold Breier.

But I doubt if the Minnesota criminal justice community would have sought to delay, distort and sabotage the investigation the way the Milwaukee Police Department did in the Lacy case.

And they had many opportunities over an extended sojourn given how the Milwaukee district attorney (E. Michael McCann), the police union, and mayor (Henry Meier) used every trick in the book to delay, undermine and desensitize the White community about the incident and police brutality against Black citizens in general.
